The plotline could involve a bunch of guys running around the lobby of Valve trying to figure out when the Source SDK will be released so they can build a game in a reasonably current engine. :rolleyes:

I'm pretty sure Unreal hasn't had it's source released. For the quake games see my post on the previous page.
 
It's gonna be hard to make a game that people should take serious when it's made with the Quake1 engine! Just make it one ****ed up game with a lot of a satanic hints and gore all over the place! Make it ****ED!

With unreal tournament 2004. They have a dedicated development website setup too.

Cost me £17.99. Best games (I say games because of all the awesome mods) I've ever bought for under 20 quid.

It's not like people improve old engines when they become open source by adding bump mapping, high res textures, shaders or anything like that.

Much... People have made Quake 1 look quite good compared to modern games and people don't have to own it for them to be able to play your game because the engine is free.
 
The storyline should consist of 2 paragraphs of gibberish and the game should be extremely violent. When you shoot some up close, the screen should be covered in blood, therefore, the player will be unable to see and the monsters will kill him.

Elvenor - An old sc map that I oringally made.
I recommend having a deep storyline, yet combined with heavy action. Yet don't make it all heavy action. Add some parts, where its light and the storyline gets beefed up alot and change to a spooky mood. Later, lead up to a huge battle.

I kinda have a storyline...
Its far into the future, you have discovered most of the milky way. Your nation spreads across many planets, and neutral with other races. You are part of an explorer team, going out to chart the unexplored areas of the galaxy and marking where planets are etc... Though you crash, and when you do it's starts off mostly trying to get to a place so you can get a rescue squad, you soon find hostiles. Though, instead of a rescue squad coming the army takes the matter into its own hands. All out war has begun.
You can add in the rest of the details if you like the crappy storyline. Have some in depth infilitration areas, yet have some huge ass battles :).

Do HL1 on the modified Quake 1 engine ^_^. I'd love to see what you do to HL1(which was on a modified quake 1 engine), and pimp it out on this newer modified quake 1 engine.
 
You don't have pure adrenalin pumping action with a very deep story, that makes for the sublime choice. (In other words, half-Life 2.)

The Quake 2 engine based game, UFO: Alien Invasion http://www.ufoai.net/ is a good example of how major your changes can be with the full engine source. Doesn't look much like quake 2 and sure as hell doesn't play like it.

Or alternatively wait for Quake 3 to be open source and to make single player. The code developed by Ace Team would be a help to you there.

Hell, just keep the original Quake 1 graphics and have a few hundred guys on the screen simultaneously. That would be truly awesome. :P

In the meantime, that Q1 revamp is better than D3. It'd be a shame to waste that graphical power on some standard nonsense, so I say go with a good plot.

Plot is the #1 thing keeping games from being as good as they can be. It's also the least technologically difficult thing to invent.

I came up with an idea for a storyline and please give me your opinion on it :)

Storyline

In the year 2178, the Earth's resources have been depleted and pollution has created an immense hole in the atmosphere. The United Nations, now with every country at peace have decided to make a colony of the military troops and the smartest people around can be taken to a different planet.

I was thinking we can have an introduction (training, to tell you how to play the game) set in the year 2178 in a boot camp like place since you will be a pvt in the military force. After the training you might be taken to a deep freeze chamber and then the actual game starts maybe a few centurys or decades later you are awoken on a forigen planet and surpise surprise it is suitable to maintain life. Maybe after learning advanced controls and getting used to the different gravity (I might make it so you can jump maybe 2 as much higher) You are assigned to patrol the area with a small squad. Maybe your captian or seargent might see a small tribal like camp and your platoon go down to check it out. A small fight with many people on your side (You will like that Mechagodzilla ;) ) and you are the only one left in the platoon and you must make your way back to base (it will be a short trek) then the aliens might follow you to the base and you have a huge war...

It is all I can think of so far

This is gonna be our storyline (It will be improved trust me). I can pitcure it now I can pitcure awakening and then stepping out of the chamber as you hear Microsoft Sam saying "Welcome to the future soldier #002902"
 
If anyone is still alive we are gonna use 3D Studio Max as our engine

I was a dumbass for thinking the 3DSM was an engine...

Could the mods also edit my first post and put everything (Except for useless stuff) Into one post before this thread becomes an excuse for spam and bumping






on a side note can I please say that we will have cinamatic sequences in our game :D
