The Rabbit Hole Goes Deeper

well not to bash Nvidia or any of its users.. but when u have Gabe say

Valve makes no issue of telling you that ATI's video card is the one to have in your box. And yes, there is a killer benchmark...

it just means that anyone buying video cards in the near future and especially to run HL2 at max settings will definitely look at ATI cards over Nvidia ones.

in the future Nvidia may or may not release a suprior card, but for now ATI seems to be the "King of the hill"

:)

It seems to be truly sad that special code paths are having to be implemented by game developers for their games to run "correctly" on NVIDIA hardware. Standards and DX9 were supposed to be about speeding up development processes, not slowing it down. But this is all speculation at this time, and as with the DOOM3 benches, we will ask that no conclusions be drawn. When the Half Life 2 benchmark hits the streets, and the full game follows close behind in about 30 to 45 days, we will all know for sure.

35-40 days after? since when? look at the end of that HardOCP article. where the hell did that come from?

EDIT: I don't mean that now I think it's going to be delayed. HardOCP was at the same meeting that everyone else was attending, and had Gabe said something along the lines of "the benchmark will be out on the 30th, and the game in a month after that", that would be front page news.

Pfff...

And I really love I kyle word the conclusion. Despite him defending the FX to the death, he still cant say just "Wow! ATI IS better at DX9!", rather use a bunch of "seem", "looks as if", "it seems to be truly sad"... It doesnt even sound like he trust Valve at all, even though he have to write it to please the fans (no one can dispute it) :D

Edit: damn, Spiffae got ahead of me :)

The hardware sites have to give nVIDIA a fair chance to try a comeback with their 5.x drivers. I'm guessing that a lot of the problems have to do with their implementation of DX9 in hardware, not in drivers, but we'll see.

Spiffae, I saw that too. Where did he get this 'benchmark + 30-45 days = release' thing. Did any of the other press people at the event mention that?

EDIT: The fact that Valve is releasing benchmarks now is good news, though. It means that they don't intend to make any more updates to Source until HL2 goes gold. So I think it's safe to consider that Source is 'gold' at this point.

I hope to god that's not the case.

agreed.

the 35-40 days is bullshit, were's their source?? again a "respected" site turns to jumping at conclusions without fact---OCP is'nt any better than all of the retailers we've seen grapping release dates out of their finely tuned assholes!!

Although it says that the release of the BM is 30th september....i think that would be HUGE mistake by valve....that measn if the release of the game is also the 30th (i'm still 100% confident that it is...) then that means that ppl won't get to test their systems and find the bottlenecks before byuing the game----this is truly a sad decision valve, almost as sad as making us login into steam, even only when we want to play at lan parties....

[hypothetically speaking]Also i wanna add that if the game DO get delayed, then i think thats taking a piss on the community that helped build valve to what it is today (in a sense).[/]

I doubt it, they seem to be the only one's that put that in.

Well I am confused as to why they would release the benchmark the same day they release the game. It would seem more logical to release it to the public as soon as possible so we can all optimize settings/hardware as we see fit. This was we aren't fumbling/tweaking stuff when we first boot up the actual game. And I think I speak for most on here, in that if the benchmark is released the same day the game is, I'm playing the damn game first!

Erm, You'll still be able buy Half-Life 2 a week after the release date. If you are worried that your computer won't run Half-Life 2, don't buy it, use the benchmark then buy it. The benchmark is for people unsure about buying Half-Life 2, not for us to boast about how good our systems run.

we all know what it takes to have good performance with hl2 by now. why should it matter when the bm comes out?

People who want the game are going to buy it regardless of what the benchmark numbers say. Those on the fence can download the benchmark, test their system, then be off to buy the game an hour later (or they can purchase it in the comfort of their own home via Steam). All I know is that Half-Life 2 will be my benchmark!

You now owe me money for dry cleaning, I just passed coffee through my nose.

BM = Bowel Movement

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!.......

sorry.

this question is a bit OT: Yanno that sticky thread the other day where we posted questions for gabe? When is that interview gonna take place?

Maybe he's one of those sillies who thinks that HL2 is going to be released in november or later.

silly billy.

that would at least explain the 30-45 day thing

hl2 is definately looking like it will be delayed to october. Im telling you this board is gonna crash with all the responses.
