It's pretty obvious why we haven't heard any info about TF2, it's the same reason they never mentioned TF2 in the past. If they released any info on TF2 they'd be giving away info about HL2 multiplayer which is supposed to be something really fun and amazing that we've never seen before. Once HL2 is released I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of info on TF2... unless they want to keep that a secret too... Too hard to tell what the hell Valve is going to do. It's one surprise after the next.

...Christmas in September.

They already saif tf2 is not the multiplayer. It will be a standalone game.

They denied the existence of TF2 because it was using the source engine and if they said anything about TF2 they might give away info about HL2's existence. We can assume TF2's multiplayer will be using the same technology as HL2's multiplayer therefor any info released about TF2 is info released about HL2 multiplayer. Like if they said "Vehicles in TF2" than it would tell us that you could use vehicles in HL2 multiplayer... but we already knew that, it was just an example. Understand?

sigh when will they learn?

I never said TF2 is HL2 multiplayer, I just said that any info released about TF2 will tell us about HL2 multiplayer which they want to keep a surprise. Just to remind you they are running the same technology.

I would hate to see TF2 being the HL2 Multiplayer to be honest.

HL1 Multiplayer was great, and it would be a shame to see the real HL2 Setting not complemented with a fitting Multiplayer Mode.

Standalone TF2 is just fine.

What would they give away? The multiplayer doesnt have to be exactly the same. Its like looking at Quake3 MP and then determining the capabilites of all the Quake3 engine MP games. They havent much in common.

hey, if you've got a better theory than let's hear it

I think it's really simple; Valve wants HL2 to have the spotlight at this point in time, I expect exposure on TF2 to commence only after the release of their first Source game.
Until that has happened, it makes sense to keep a lid on TF2 related information.

Yeah, they probably want HL2 to be the first...

But what I'm thinking is that they are still thinking on it :)
Its expensive to launch a game... Will TF2 really be worth it, even if its using Source? What TF2 was when hyped, have already been surpassed by a longshot. Is what it have become enough? What about the mods? Will it stand any chance against the hundreds modern warfare mods? TF2 will only offer ONE gameplay type (not multiplayer mode, I'm talking realism factor, weapon handling, vehicle handling etc), the mods will offer HUNDREDS to choose from... My guess is that TF2 will be obsolete about 2 months after release. Because by then, the mods have already taken to them what TF2 lacks and will implement it in their mods. Valve can NEVER compete with that.

Maybe the multiplayer's going to be Half-Life Classic... but I dunno if that's a good idea or not.

Interesting point Dawdler, but I think TF2 will be a few steps ahead of all other mods since they have worked on it for five years.

...Christmas in September.

Weve never heard about TF2 because it has joined Duke Nukem Forever on a permanent vacation

the reason there is no info on tf2 is because they only want to announce it just before it's finished, like they did with hl2

Meaning, it wont be finished for another 4-5 months if they do it like HL2... There is a VERY big chance some big mods already have settled in the community by then (keep in mind, code is just code, many HL mods moving to HL2 will already have much work complete, and wont take much time, same with models). TF2 wouldnt stand a chance.

I'd be veery suprised if Valve does'nt atleast release TF2 right about xmas time, since HL2 is out on the 30th, by xmas valve will have established a good solid userbase for TF2---remember when valve had started development of TF2 back in 99' there were 2 teams at valve. (mentioned somewhere by gabe...)

so the other team could easily have worked on TF2 during the time HL2 has been in development.

Welcome to last month...

Umm, no they didn't. They've never "denied the existance" of TF2. In fact, Gabe Newell has specifically stated that TF2 will be a standalone product, which, is an inherent acknowledgement of its development.

No shit. We can assume this because we've been told this.

JavaGuy, stfu and read the entire topic over again you dumbass.

Kyle2, there is no reason for you to act like a troll. Never do it again please.

yes kuros, i'm the troll because i posted my thought and than had someone flame me over it and decided to defend myself. did it ever occur to you that maybe i've been a lurker all this time and finally decided to say something because i came up with a great theory?

Kyle2, asking people to shut the **** up and telling them they are a dumbass constitutes trolling. Defend yourself with arguments instead of personal assaults.

yeah but than someone posts that stupid "arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics" picture

I wouldn't say that until you know what TF2's going to be like...

But we already know it wont stand a chance. Make a mod, modern times, teamplay, many maps, etc etc... Pretty as hell. Then wait.
When TF2 comes out, listen to ALL complaints about it (bad weapons/fast/slow/poor vehicles/missing vehicles/few gameplay modes/etc etc), and redesign the mod code base so it builds on all the best of TF2 and adds all that is missing (there is ALWAYS something missing, no single game is perfect).
Within months, one can release what could be a successor to TF2, improving in every aspect.
And over time, this mod will update and update and update contents. My guess, TF2 wont (Valve is busy with HL3 or another game :)). It will listen to fans and alter accordingly.

This is what I mean that whatever Valve release, they dont stand a chance against mods. CS2 will make do with just the name (even if its not good) for a while. TF2 wont, cause it doesnt have a name really.

I'm not one to put as much faith in the mods as dawdler.
While there will undoubtedly be a deluge of mods a few months after release, the vast, vast majority of them won't really be worth playing. Only a small handful will be done well and feel like a real game. And I think TF2 has room with that small group if it is worth the money.
