The reason we play games...

Man I have been reading post about Doom3, Half-Life 2, etc..
And all I keep hearing is how the graphics aren't that mind blowing, or seem out dated from a year ago. I don't read a book because it has a pretty cover, I enjoy it for it's content.

And man I love games where aliens take over and your like this resistance fighting to survive. Half-Life 2 is going to be an enjoyable and immersive experience.

Like Doom3, I expected a shooter, not an indepth story, and I got what I expected, and love every minute of it.

Now if they can light a fire under the publisher to get this game out in the Fall which is the optimal game playing IMO. :naughty:

Another "The reason" threads.

Yes, HL2 is going to be cool because the gameplay. I agree.

*Sigh*

Fall...

the time when Exams really start and I have the most homework... :)

I have a book that's just the same as HL2, so I literally know the ending to HL2, if you want to read it it's called : The war of the worlds
It even has Striders into it.

I just finished HL1 singleplayer, even though I've played a billion times, I still find it awesome, after all these years, I don't really mind that the graphics look like crap by today's standard, it's a good story. Although I'll probably replay it when it get's ported to source.

I've read the Ward of the Worlds and I don't think it's that similar to HL2. Yes there sre striders and aliens, anything else?

i think we're living in an increasingly jaded gaming society, my first computer experience was on the Spectrum ZX, still to this day, some of my favourite gaming moments happened between that and getting on to the PC (486 DX66). Back then, it was a given that the gfx weren't great, so I think that now they resemble reality with each new step, people's expectations increase furthermore. Personally, it seems that the craftsmanship from gaming has been lost, when u played the VGA lucasarts adventures (Sam n Max, DOTT, Monkey Island), you could tell people had invested lots of there own energies into producing the game, now it's more like the developers are merely guiding the technology into what they want doing, the only recent games that have made a deep impact were KOTOR and GTA:VC.

Hopefully, now that realistic gfx are a reality, hopefully the focus will return to gameplay and decent scripts/plots.

Those lucasarts adventure games really were the greatest, and grim fandango the best of all, but at the time those graphics were pretty eye-popping, those games really were pushing technology....especiallywith sound, probably the first game that succesfully used the CD-Rom medium for speech.

To this day I still hate Paco. I used to swear at him just to get him to tell me to wash my mouth out. F**K Paco! lol..... sorry couldn't resist!

KOTOR really made me realise that it wasn't me getting older and just more used to gaming experiences; those old games really were amazing and I think KOTOR and hopefully the imminent sequel will be held with equal regard. In fact I got SCUMM and DOSBOX, just to play DOTT and Sam and Max again, you can now get Beneath A Steel Sky for free now too. I think games are on such a large scale, it's following the pop music industry's trend of decay, with vapid trendy technology masking the true hidden talent within gaming.

What does debating graphics have to do with gameplay?

It has nothing to do with it. That's the point. Everybody is comparing gameplay between to different types of game, one of which hasn't even been released yet, hehe. Both are probably a lot of fun, but different enough that they probably shouldn't be compared. I know that we're only doing this because these were the 2 biggies for the year in most peoples' books.

What really makes me realize that gameplay>graphics is when i find an old game i haven't played for years. Then i remember playing it and all the fond memories come flooding back. So i fire up the game and am shocked at the graphics and i don't understand how i could have bared them, being so awful and all. But after a few hours I am abrorbed into the game again. Examples would be vigilante 8 and FF7, ah happy days :dork:
