Well there is a demo out, just go to The Settlers site to find it.

I had, and still do have high hopes for this game. However, after playing the demo, its quite clear that its essentially not a settlers game anymore...it seems to have lost that little thing that it had. Obviously its not cartoony anymore, but there was something else. The resource management is actualy a lot different. The way soldiers and buildings are produced has changed a lot as well. For instance, you can build anywhere, without towers and you build captains of a soldier type, who then brings a squad with him that can be reinforced if some men are lost.

I think although its going to be a great game, its a little more generic now and therefore it wont stand out quite like the previous titles. Still, at least they've finaly moved away from the Romans. I enjoyed playing them, but they got stuck with them like FPS's have been stuck with WW2 shooters for a while. The first game was Settlers game was medieval, and so it seems this one is as well.

Hopefully the multiplayer wont be haunted by the dreaded ringing that signified a desync.

Could you tell us a bit more about what the series' about? An RTS focused on town-building?

Anyway, downloading demo.

EDIT: Actually, never mind. I was reading the official boards, and everyone basically agrees that this is a generic RTS and not a Settlers game. Oh well.

settlers 3 was excellent, but i never tried 4.

i'm downloading the new demo :0

Another one of these games? Ugh, never like any of these middle/dark age games. Rpg, rts stuff :/ They need to make future settings. That might be interesting.

the s5 demo is fun but not settlers :(

i never really got into settlers 4, and i got a bug in settlers 3 which apparently only came with pirated copies, though i didn't know HMV did that sort of thing... For me settlers 2 was the best, you had control over the management of the camp, resource allocation and buildings, but not things that shouldn't have been in your control, like where soldiers go.

I dunno, I liked the part where you could control soldiers. For me it really added a much needed aspect, where you could actually be a greater tactician and beat a large force.

I did love Settlers 2, and I played it up until the day I got Settlers 4 (Never got settlers 3 for some reason) and now I play that all the time, right next to newer games like Rome.

Raziel there are plenty of futuristic games out, settlers had is own niche and shouldn't move too far away from it.

I've never played a Settlers game before, one of my friends really got into it a while ago but I never picked it up. Can anyone explain to me what's so good about it while I ponder whether or not to get the demo.

The original The Settlers is a great game. Although it's a bit hard to get working under XP, it's still a ton of fun. I've never played it in singleplayer, so I'm talking about my experiences with my friend. You play with a split screen and player two plays with a pad. When both of the players get the hang of it, it's a ton of fun.

I liked Settlers 2 too, never played it's multiplayer. I didn't like settlers 3 and 4. Maybe it was because they didn't have roads in them.

There's no stuff getting made anymore! You get Blacksmiths and stuff but they just sit there giving bonuses. You don't see stuff like a mine mining iron, which goes to a Smelter to become steel. And that goes to a Blacksmith to become Swords.

Now you build a blacksmith and it just sits there giving you bonuses to iron production.

I have never played a settlers game before I played this demo, so I have no idea what it is supposed to be like :/

I enjoyed the demo, and imo it's NOT a generic RTS, it's a good game. I for one will most definately be buying it.

No you're right, but if you had played the previous settlers games, you would understand more what we're talking about. Its just not the same and it feels so much more like a normal game now, where you mine resources as if its basically money...You just don't get the same feeling from the game at all, because things don't flow, as its all seperated out really.

Yeah, that was my problem with it really. You don't really see your economy running the way it did. With the old settlers game you could see the resources moving through. Also you had to keep a demand for items, otherwise your economy would begin to fail....it was just so right. Now everything feels seperated really, where as in the old games if you took out once piece then your whole war machine would grind to a halt.

Settlers games went to hell when they took away our roads.
