The Spirit (creator of SinCity

The comics are awesome. And apparently the film is so much better than the adverts suggest.

This movie was abominable. Do not go see it, it was really, really bad.

The only redeeming quality of this movie was the out of place Samuel L Jackson with his funny get-ups. Otherwise, this was the worst movie I have seen in the past few years.

I really kinda liked it, even though it slaughtered Eisner's Spirit.

I adored Sin City, and was so glad to see that art style again.

I agree with Pes.
I nearly fell asleep watching this. :| It had a few small laughs here and there, but nothing to redeem it.

i thought it was funny, for all the wrong reasons mind you, it was laughably bad, one of those good bad movies that MST3K/RiffTrax should do.

It was fairly good.
If you think it was funny for the wrong reasons you're not very preceptive. It was intentionally tongue in cheek a lot of the time, and carried it off quite well.

I'll watch it when it comes to dvd but my expectations are rather low ..mostly because it's frank miller. I like his work in film however the spirit looks like miller's work not eisners work (creator of the spirit) ..stylistically they're worlds apart. Eisner is film noir/pulp crime fictio. Miller is more neo film noir, too gritty for eisner's work. again I havent seen it but I thought Miller was an odd choice

It's a lot more like (Warren Beatty's) Dick Tracey than Sin City, far less gritty, more OTT comic book style dialogue and action.
I haven't read the Spirit comics to compare but the film was fun.

I think it was probably marketed wrongly, the trailers etc kept emphasising that it's by the creator of 300 and Sin City but it's nothing like them and people probably go to watch it with the wrong expectations. They then fail to realise it's tongue in cheek and intentionally OTT with silly sequences and think it's just all a huge blunder.

the comics it's based on has a bit of a weird history. it's gone through so many changes that it's really hard to pin point what the overall tone of the comics are. Eisner jumped from detective, to pulp fiction to superhero to broad comedy and even horror stories. if it's as tongue in cheek as you say it is then they're at least trying to capture the eisner mood

did they have this character in the film?

I don't.... think so...

And it's pretty tongue in cheek alright. Like a scene where the baddies are dressed up as Nazis and have a room full of Nazi memorabilia for no apparent reason.

Meh, probably from people going in with the wrong expectations, like I said, the advertisers messed up. It's pretty decent, could be better ofc but not bad.

I'd like to dress up as a nazi for no apprent reason ..have you seen the uniforms? they're tres chic
