My brother pointed this out to me today. I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but the spy's knife, as seen in the 3 minute video, is a balisong.

Over IM:

censored: have u s33n the newzorz team fortress 2 prevue!!
censored: also, gabe newell is an avid member of bladeforums, too funny
censored: hence maybe the balisong the spy uses as the knife in TF2???
majinvegeta897: he uses a balisong!?
censored: yes
censored: it's too godly
majinvegeta897: i didn't notice
censored: watch the previews
censored: whips it out, reverse grip vertical drop

(the netspeak in the opening message was done on purpose, he is no noob)

That's pretty cool, I never knew Gabe was on those forums, and apparantly he likes balisongs.

He collects knives, doesn't he?

Apparantly so.

Keep in mind balisongs aren't just for collecting, you do tricks with them.

Gabe doesn't really strike me as the kind of guy who's good with a knife.

when you are rich and everyone equates your name with genius, you can collect whatever the heck you want.

For the uneducated, a reference pic would be needed here.

The handles and blace are all rotate around the center hinge and so you can flip it out from the closed position, and also do tricks with it. There are some videos you can find with a google search.

Omg if you've seen his office you would realize that he is a big knife collector :p He has an entire bookshelf just filled with them.

When the ES team went to VALVe, we all decided that in case of a zombie attack, Gabe's office is the best place to go to :p

I think I have seen a few swords laying around in pictures of VALVe HQ..

As for the balisong, I've heard them called, "Butterfly knives"..

Yeah that's the name for people who don't want to be proper ;)

yes indeed he does like knifes alot, i went over to jersey, and took pics of the knifes in the jersey war tunnels sent them to gabe, i remember he sent me a thanks email and in it he had forwarded the mail around quite a few people, he seemed really interested.

I remember the days when we used to watch his ebay account as he bought very expensive and classy knives/dagger things. Maybe he ported an interest into this game. The CS and DOD knife isn't anything special is it?

What are the benefits of using balisong knife? I mean in reality and except cool.

Ya adds alot of new gameplay in to the game. You can bore your opponent to the edge of suicide with these ballsong knife tricks :p

perhaps the idle animation for the weapon will show awesome tricks n such.....yumm

surely a normal knife is more 'boring'... it doesn't do anything

other than the way a bali opens, it's just like any other knife. the only difference is that you can flip them open and spin them around your fingers and things.

its not neccessarily MEANT to add anything to the game, just something that the devs thought could be kinda cool, and maybe let them add an idol animation to it that's a bit more interesting then 'examining' the knife, or wiping blood off it or something. Noone's saying that you're gonna be doing constant flips or that you're gonna flip it every time you use it, it's just a knife with a cool animation

Lest we forget we a talking about a SPY here. A Knife that can be concealed just makes sense for the character.

I don't get it, while I can see from an entertainment/showmanship standpoint of using the balisong. I would think there would be a more appropriate (fixed) blade for the job. If I'm in tight quarters where stealth and the element of surprise are paramount. The last thing I want to do is be flipping my knife around.

Hopefully he'll have a "Spork" as backup weapon.
