The start of HL2

I remember reading a short story by Phillip K Dick a while ago. It was about this guy who wakes up after having his memory erased. Turns out that he'd been working for this organisation. You sign up to work for them for a few years on the agreement that you get your memory erased afterwards.

Now, I can imagine that maybe Gordon has been working for the G-man for all the time between Half-Life 1 and 2 and maybe you've just come to the end of your contract and are free to live your life, on the condition that they erase your memory. That could be why you'll be confused as Gordon.

Another idea I had was that Gordon DIDN'T accept the G-man offer. Maybe what the G-man was saying in Chinese WAS the hidden easter egg, giving you a hint to the start of Half-Life 2. (He says "Well, it looks like we won't we working together"). Something could've happened on Xen that allowed you to get back to Earth. Gabe did say that you will be a big surprise from the start.

I'm a little nervous while reading these posts. Won't some people already know the start of the story because of the leak?

well, we know that one of the alien races willl be on freeman's side, so I'm thinking Freeman gets help excapeing xen or whereever he was taken..

You guys remember that in many of the screens we see that the sea level has sunk or the sea is totally gone, yet in some screens and the first vid we saw (the one on the docks) the sea level is normal... so could the game start with some kind of event that lowers the sea level tremendosuly?

I also remember them saying the striders were meant to be placed in some open areas on the ocean floor or something but they tested one in the city to see what would happen and were blown away by the results...

I've just found out that Phillip K Dick story was actually made into a film, called Paycheck.

Turns out the G-Man is Gordon Freemans father.

I'd love to start out in a train (a real train) out in the middle of nowhere. (snow or desert) The train would stop eventually, and you'd get off. As soon as you've touched ground the train starts going away, and as it's going away the tracks that took you to that spot were disappearing (you can't find your way back). So you watch it go away into the sunrise or something.. and when you'd least expect it, the G-Man puts his hand on your shoulder, whispers something in your ear and you black out.. and then.. ???

Who knows? It'll be either as dramatic or as tense as hell.

yeah, the beginning is supposed to "drop you right into the action"....so we'll see.

I think Gman busts out dual shotguns and shows them COMBINE whos the GMAN!

blam!

I don't know what they have planned for the start, but if it is something like HL1 with the long ride I'll be happy, was one of my fondest memories the first time I ran the game to see all that. I only wish they'd included a skip button for later games when you don't fancy sitting through it again and dont happen to have the console running to skip to the game proper. So if its something like that again as you suggest, with country side, tree's and lakes and so on I'd like there to be a skip button, or an option in the program to not run it in future.
amen.

Maybe the combine has stored all the water in large containers, taken back to there dimension or planet, or temperatures rise on Earth making the water evaporate or maybe the atmosphere slowly leaks into space,.

I hope it's a ride, like at the beginning of HL1, but suddenly the veichle you're on starts shaking and you're attacked.

i reckon you will be inserted into City17 via a helicopter.

You start off outside the city and fly over some suburbs and see the Combine rounding up civilians and maybe a few other cool goodies like maybe ant lions burrowing in a cave or something.

then you land (or get shot down) and the combine come after you and you gotta run for it, then you find Alyx or kliener.

Isnt that "We will remember it for you wholesale". Or basically Total Recall.

You have a weird dream where the G-Man gives you a speech, then you wake up on a dock...

It probably starts you off in an aircraft, you get shot at, you eject. when you take off your helmet, it turns out your actually that dude from Behind Enemy Lines (forgotton his name)

I think the Kleiner's Lab trailer is more or less the beginning of the game...

"Wake up Gordon".... doesn't that sound like a beginning line?

It just occured to me- maybe that exact scene follows on from a flashback/fecked up dream of sorts, if Gabe maintains the concept of flashbacks. So you "come round" to find yourself staring at Alyx, who will continually berate you as she thinks you're trying to spy her cleavage. The fact she's wrapped up tight makes no difference to a paranoid woman. *mamble mamble mamble*

Seems a bit too abrupt for a beginning, but who knows, maybe a souped-up version elaborating events is present

would so love it, if it starts at the end of HL1.....WITH THE HL1 GRAPHICS. and then you choose again.

You got through the Portal and then fades black...then Fades in to game again with HL2 Ghaphics :D

WOW who here would love that...

Because in away it is a start where you are confussed a bit...Hmmm dunno just a thought

I would like valve to replay that whole conversation between you and the Gman in the source engine, then you do choose again, like commando said. Then the intro kind of goes into a fast forward, getting faster and faster, with more frequent explosions, showing in confusion, what freeman has been upto in the last 15 years or so. Then the fast forward starts to turn black and white, and then pitch dark with heavy breathing. This is when you wake up, on board that ice breaker. Your vision blurred, but starts to clear.

Alyx is sitting down next to a medical bed, you look around, and spot a respitory machine and a heart monitor
"Gordon, do you remember who i am...Dad he's woken up!"
or
"Gordon, do you remember who i am...I, I am your wife Alyx" She starts to cry

Gman walks in
"You took a nasty hit to the head, we had to operate to releas-se a blood clot to your head, you might be s-s-suffering from memory loss, but your memory s-s-should return in time"

An intercom message
"All hands, man your posts, combine patrols approaching"
Sirens let loss

Like your ideas, very cool...

My theory
You start like HL1 ends , with a blackout and then you remember everything all important events from HL1 and then wake up , you look around and see the G-Man , your are beeing transported to City 17 . G-Man tells you what's going on there and what happened with Black Mesa .
And the story unfold so on... :frog: .
Off topic ..... kinda
you could end the story going back in time and just before pushing the probe in that laser thingy in HL1 you put a stop to your missery and shoot yourself and all nightmare ends . :p

Alyx = Gordon's wife? I very much doubt it. But I do expect to revisit some scenes from HL1 in flashback form.

I know, "HalfLife" would just then become "Dallas"
I can just see it now

NURSE-"Alyx your husband is alive"
ALYX -"Noooooooo! I wanted him to die so I get all his money and belongings"
NURSE-" I shouldn't say that if I were you, his alive and kicking, and he's swinging his crowbar at the respitory machine, he looks like his pissed off at something"
GORDON-"Come out, come out where ever you are little headcrab, I know your in there"

Oh, yeah. It'd be like In Enemy at the Gates when the soldiers are coming into stalingrad at the beginning and you can see loads of war going on and thigns blowing up, and the city 17 skyline is on fire....

Hypothetical Intro 1: You start off in halucination, the Gman's face swimming in front of yours, he gives a little speech. You hear gunshots and explosions, muffled and echoing, until suddenly they get really loud and you wake up in the water. Loads of aliens/combine/whatever are attacking a rebel boat...

Hypothetical Intro 2: You start off in halucination, the Gman's face swimming in front of yours, he gives a little speech. You're on a plane, flying over city 17. Suddenly it gets hit and goes down...

Hypothetical Intro 3: You are sent into city 17 and everything is fine...and then you're in a plaza when A huge gash appears in the sky, spewing green flmae and aliens start appearing everywhere...

All sound kewl. :p

I reckon when Freeman chose to work for the G-man, he was transported to a lab immediately after the incident or something, but then he kept on phasing out and in of real-space, then the lab personnel lose him completely. But then that’s where HL2 comes in, because Freeman was actually transported 15 years into the future by Dr. Kliener of the future. He apologises, but he then says it was necessary because the populace was dwindling, many organisations had fallen under the influence of the Combine, and Freeman would of died around 6 years ago if he weren’t transported to the future otherwise.

The flashbacks are not of Freeman, but when the NPC are telling the story, Freeman was seeing the flashbacks through the eyes of NPC.

It'll probably start with some sort of boat-trip, or train ride trough city 17.. just like halflife did.

I think it will start on some sorta tram, or helicopter. Every other half life did. (i hope it does) I don't think you will see the Gman at the very beginning. I think you will find yourself in a few situations first. I also think the Gman is not part of the combine, I would guess the Gman and his employers have the ability to travel through time, but only forwards. But their time machine can also see into the future or give them some idea about what is going to happen. I would guess the resistance has never heard of or seen the Gman, and neither has the Combine. The combine might be a tool of the gman and his employers though they don't really know it. Mabey mabey mabey... who knows, god i cant wait for this game :)

I think it'll be a boat in this one, we did see that a level in HL2 contains a harbor with lots of shipwrecks and even a submarine!:O:O

I think you will wake up and gman will debrief you on what is happening and he will teleport you somewhere.

Theres talk about flashbacks and how people would like to see the ending of hl1 played out again as the begining of hl2.

Well most games out there start off with a training exercise so I think it would be rather fitting to have the original hl1 training mission replayed out for hl2. Naturally looking a whole lot better. It'd let you relate to all the old characters again and would be funny as hell! All the extra bits like issuing commands n such can be delt with later as you return to the present.

Where are you guys getting this fruity, "Dreaming about the G-Man" stuff? He will NOT dream about the G-man, thats cheesy as hell. Hes gonna start off probably on some long ride in a helicopter, land somewhere, get out, talk, walk around THEN go fight, all in a simliar manner to HL1.

The coolest thing would be if HL2 actually started .... in the Black Mesa train ride!!!!

You would get to replay the whole of HL1 remade in the HL2 engine before moving on!

umm.... i think i can do that later, cool idea, but i can piss the layout of black mesa in the snow, i think it will be a fun extra but not for the beginning
