The State Of Society's Youth

Absinthe is correct - society is the same as it's always been - it's now much easier for bad news to be broadcast. However, certain areas have regressed (localities etc)

My town has become a ghost town as of the last few years, no one goes out and does anything past 9:30 at night

I have a good idea ...why not let parents do their jobs? it's easy to become a parent, it's not easy to be a parent ...at least not a good parent

we can look to guns violence in the media etc till we're blue in the face but ultimately it's the parents that raise kids ..not teachers, not tv, not video games ...PARENTS

that said ...I'm one of the good parents :)

 However, you can't enforce someone to be a good parent, I don't think people like being told how to raise their kids, even if they're raising them badly.

Nope, society has got worse. When I was 16, there was nothing like the amount of kids hanging around like they do now. Obviously, there were troublemakers - there always are. I've never seen it on this scale, though - kids seem to have no concern about consequences whatsoever.

Not sure where you people live, but I've personally never seen anything particularly bad in today's youth. Granted I get the occasional bad apple and some areas have a higher concentration of shady types, but I've seen nothing that suggests society on the whole is going down the crapper.

Here's an example.

A couple of weeks ago, there was a bunch of obviously drunken youths walking down our street, shouting and swearing ("kill the ****ing asians", for some reason). When a resident stepped outside and told them to keep it down, he was rewarded with a tirade of abuse. If he'd have carried on at that point, I'm pretty certain it would have turned to violence.

Flash back 10 years, to when me and my friends would have been drunkenly staggering home. Firstly, we'd be trying to keep quiet (as much as you reasonably can be when hammered). If someone opened their front door and stepped out, we'd have been more likely to run off giggling than to abuse said person. We actually considered what would happen - i.e. our parents could find out (this is a small village) etc. The kids round here now don't give a shit.

Yeah, but I would be pretty much the same now Pi (I'm 18)

Its just certain groups that cause this trouble (Scum!)

I just wanted to point out that obviously not all of todays youth are like that.... but I reckon its a growing problem for sure..

Since I'm in the same generation as most of today’s yobs I obviously don't know what it was like before my time.

I still agree that it is worse now that is has ever been. Kids have no respect for anyone or anything these days. When I was at school I saw many examples of this. Teacher's having nervous breakdowns, toilet fires and someone smashing a window with a hard back book (2 floors up) which could've possibly injured someone walking below. I'll admit I wasn't one of the mature students, I did immature things too like pranks but I never went too far as to possibly hurt someone in some way.

Maybe life is getting too easy. Kids aren't getting disciplined therefore they think they can do anything.

you're correct ...this would never fly but I really think parents should have some sort of mandatory course before they have their first child (maybe they wont get a mother's allowance unless they fullfil the requirements of the course) ...too many people (myself included) have no idea what to expect ..in this day and age we cant rely solely on our instincts to raise our kids ...most families need both parents working so little actual time is devoted to parenting

it's much easier to slap in a Barney movie than it is to entertain your child for that duration

I blame the whole class society we do so well here. It's pretty reasonable to expect that when you crowd a lot of lower income families, which are more likely to be larger and have more issues with the law, closer and closer together in really basic housing that these families will breed and encourage very delinquent youth. We need to get the balance of government handouts and self-sufficency correct, really.

I think the people commiting all these frankly baffling acts of criminality are lost as youths, to be honest. But we can make sure that they're okay parents, and that they take responsibility for their lives and the consequences of their actions as adults. It's all well and good hating them and berating them in your little rich boy internet circles, but maybe it'd be a better idea to try and solve the problems for the future.
