The status of "harder-than-hard" difficulty setting

/facepalms

Ditto that.

People barely play Hard as it is, what makes you think they'll play hardcore or nightmare or harder than hard?

You can hardly claim I started it. Was having a nice discussion (yes, this was a discussion) and you came along claiming no-one played on Hard. An ignorant statement if I've ever heard one.

You did start it

Ignorant statement. You mean because you and your 13 year old friends find it too difficult, you don't like playing it...

Episode One would've been way to short had I not run it through on Hard first. I always play my HL2 games on Hard, nowadays, just to actually get what I could out of it. So I didn't skip through it. It's not a game to skip through.

I played HL2 on Medium the first time I played it. Played it on Hard ever since.

And the statistics that Valve put up doesn't show "barely". It shows quite a lot of people play it on Hard. Especially after the shortness of Episode One.

Thats a clear insult and smart ass comment that a normal human being would take as disrespect, u didnt only do it to me, u do it to everybody all around this forums, but i guess im the only one that has ever had the balls to
say something to u.

claiming no-one played on Hard

Did i say that?

No sir.

I said

People barely play Hard

Bearly = some, few.
no-one = nobody.

^^^I dont think that's the same, right bud?

Urumax - Learn to type right.

Druckles - Just let it go, its a pointless arguement over absoutly nothing. Both of you. STFU.

I e-mailed Gabe about this back in October:

Could you add in a fourth difficulty level, akin to Quake's "Nightmare", to make it nearly impossible for the average player to beat? A throwback to Doom with the "Are you sure? At this difficulty, the game is really just unfair." message would be awesome too.

I got a reply back from Marc Laidlaw yesterday:

Thanks for the suggestion/request.

Yours,

Marc Laidlaw

Just thought I'd pass it along...

Well, maybe it was the polite way of saying "We're already implementing the difficulty mode, but that Doom message was lame, shut your mouth." ;)

I wonder why Laidlaw would be the one to reply? Perhaps they will have some kind of warning in Half-Life style, "The Freeman is recommended against undertaking this task" or some such. It is a kind of a generic response, but maybe evidence that the wheels are turning on this?

Now that you mention it, that would be the Valve way of doing the warning message, especially in Episode 2, what with the "The mission cannot continue without the Freeman, all hope is lost" death messages, instead of the earlier "Subject showed a tremendous lapse of judgment" ones. (I forget the exact wording on both sets of those, but I'm sure you know what I mean)

I'm really hoping they produce one, but I know that if they do, we won't get anything for a long while.
