On the bottom of the page:

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people ? people he cares about ? are counting on him.

I dont know if this text has been mentioned before (probably has so flame me till your nuts goes green)..

But it seems like the aliens are travelling from parralel to parralel universe to gather resources and then they leave the planet empty.. this would also explain the dried out ocean..
And so it is up to our alien-bashing friend gordon to save this planet from this inferno..

I dont know this theory is just as the others.. give me your thoughts on this!

To be honest, not many people think about it in terms of aliens gathering resources. After all, that seems to be the way humans do it. Invade and take everything, then try to make them work for you. Most people see it as being revenge, or just something more sinister, like the gman bringing his alien friends along to take over. Stuff like that.

Precisely, there WAS a line Laidlaw mentioned in that on-line interview he did (although I think this may have been the one he took out) which was: 'When you think of the creatures we've driven to extinction without a second thought, aren't you grateful the Combine isn't just another one-dimensional superpredator like... well, like ourselves?'
But then actually the fact that the Combine AREN'T etc etc, may mean that there's more to it... So you could be very right.

Exciting stuff.

Maybe us humans will be the resources they need, but that would be a little cliched :afro:

Probably something Gman would say: 'When you think of the creatures we've driven to extinction without a second thought, aren't you grateful the Combine isn't just another one-dimensional superpredator like... well, like ourselves?'

Agent Smith in The Matrix: I'd like to share a revelation I had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are the cure.

Hmmmmmmmm!!!! Coincidence? I think the HL2 story will turn out to be something I/we haven't thought about yet: The Combine are humans that collaborate with the aliens to make better use of Earth's resources. Before HL1, the Aliens saw how we, humans, mess this planet up by pollution, over-exploitation, etc etc, and they decided it was time to teach us a lesson in environmentally friendly living. They send the Xen specimen (mineral rock) to earth for the scientists to conduct their experiments on, resonance cascade, blah blah, status at the beginning of HL2: The Combine, a group of environmentalists that understand the aliens' good intentions have teamed up with the aliens to bring down the current hyperconsumation of earth's resources by the rich superpowers. Gordon Freeman wants to teach the treehugging hippies a lesson!!

Ok so I let my imagination run wild, but I've got a good excuse: I'm a total fanboi!!!

I bet humans are actually the "evil" aliens and we are taking over other worlds under the guidence of the Gman AKA "the administrator" and his bosses.

wow I never thought of it that way....... thats genious

I wanna know who the gman's bosses are, they must be pretty fsucking important mf'ers

I know I've heard other people talk about it, but some people thought that the boss of Opposing Force was the first of many "Resource Gatherers" that would be sent in to start gathering resources to continue the invasion past Black Mesa.

As for us being the "evil aliens" that also holds a lot of water. If you look at the evidence from HL + expansions, it's obvious that we were already going to Xen and bringing back stuff for a significant time. For example the sample that was the catalyst for the Resonance Cascade. But they didn't just stop at inanimate objects, they took the lifeforms, atleast a few Icyathsours were brought back, barnacles, an Alien Grunt, and a few of the spore launchers. Sure some of that stuff could be seen as scientific samples, but the grunt could obviously be identified as intelligent life, and I doubt would be captured without the use of a lot of force, and therefore seems pretty damning of the lambda team's innocence as to instigating the invasion. The invasion at Black Mesa could very well have just been a pre-emptive strike against the invaders of Xen.

I've always thought that an attack from Xen was in the works anyway, and the resonance cascade managed to screw up their plans, then after the dimensional turbulance died down, they started being able to send in the main attacking force. In the later stages of the invasion, they start sending in larger and meaner troops (take the shock troopers for example, the ability to not only kill rather quickly, but equiped with grenades), and the means to resupply those troops (those spore thingies that started growing in Op4, and the boss). The invasion was planned to start at black mesa, and then spread from there, but I assume killing the nihilanth, plus the nuke going off would delay those plans, causing them to need a new place to start the invasion.

I think that to teleport between dimensions, there needs to be an instability in the dimensional barrier at both the origin and the destination, hence why the invasion would need to originate in some place like City 17 as opposed to in the middle of the desert where the forces could muster then invade. The "Combine" (if you've seen the Strider movie, the "citadel" walls, actually move forward at the begining, slowly eating through City 17) is a combine literally, a harvesting device. It's just a tool to harvest resources to further the invasion of Earth. We crossed them first, and now they want to make sure that it won't happen again.

its probably like POKE646
where the US gov (or other group of assholes) is the invader

I believe that Op4's Race X (of which the Shock Trooper was a member) had nothing to do with the usual Xen beasties.
It'll be no great loss if they don't return, IMHO.

I think there must be 2 groups of aliens, the technology we see (the striders and the gunship) are obviously not human, but they don't exactly fit in with the xen alien tactics, which is biological weapons.

I noticed the harvesting at the beginning of the strider video too! If you listen carefully you hear the guy who is controlling the video say something about it.:borg:

The Striders and FlyingManatee (aka Gunship) are part of the Combine - there'll be a lot of bio-mech stuff apparently.
The guy (Gabe?) at the beginning of the strider part simply mentions that the Combine Citadel is "eating" its way through City17, which is illustrated by the fence bits moving forward, annexing about 10ft. Not quite harvesting.

Oh yeah! It does look like a manatee now i think about it:cheers:

Well, eating/harvesting means the same sort of thing in this context. Do you think the combine is a new force seperate from the xen aliens? Because they arn't exactly xen style are they. The xen usually use organisms as weapons.

I think there are quite afew alien races involved, more then just two, They'll be the xen and Combine, and like a seperate alien race, but they're more secretive about there actions....
