Little stats like this sum up to me why it is so pointless to get hot under the collar about terrorism, especially when people say, for example, that they're wary about travelling to London due to the perceived terrorist threat. You're far more likely to be hit by a car than you are to be blown up by a bomb, but I never hear people saying stuff like 'I really don't feel happy about walking to the park today - there are so many roads between here and there *tremble*...'

And yet people are willing to sacrifice centuries-old civil liberties to give more power to authorities who can only make us microscopically safer. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, ""Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." How many politicians have the guts to stop their electioneering long enough to say a line like that nowadays? Instead it's all "Safety is paramount!" and "What about the freedom of the people who got blown up on 7/7??!?!?"

I suppose in their eyes the ideal society would be the very, very safest one - with racks of people in living in visored steel coffins, fed by intravenous drip?

At this time, terror is not a major threat to Americans. For that matter, no type of attack is probable. This is due to America's isolation and our insane expenditure on military. Only fanatical fringe groups would be willing to attack a monster like the U.S.A.
