The easy answer to your content production speed is that yep, we're a heck of a lot smaller than most MMO teams. The TF2 team is about 10 people right now. They work almost all their time on TF2 alone, and we don't really have anyone outside that group who help out.

We try to get prototypes of all our update ideas into the game as fast as possible, so that we can evaluate them early, and make changes as necessary. This may not be the fastest way to produce things, but to be honest, that's not our priority, as we optimize for quality, not overall production speed.

The TF2 team doesn't spend any time worrying about funding. We focus on making sure our players are happy, and so far our experiences have shown us that if we succeed at that, we make money.

Screw the haters I think all in all the post-release TF2 team has done a fantastic job.

With something like 190+ employees - the leaves 180 to be doing L4D, EP3, Portal 2 and Steam Updating...

And a few left to do all the actual business work?

200 people work at Valve

30 Work on Steam
10 Work on TF2
<10 Work on Portal 2 (assuming the team size hasn't changed since Portal)

That leaves about 150 people working on Admin/Legal/Marketing stuff, Ep3, L4D and anything else they have going on.

Does anybody have the number of people at Turtle Rock before Valve bought them out?

I think they had 9 people at Turtle Rock prior to the buy-out.
