Watch this and your pants tent will be created.

I have no idea if this is rendering real time, i haven't even read anything about it. My pants are still dripping from wang blowage.

Flying down TO the fricking planet surface! That was but a distant dream in the days of the mighty x-wing.

Your thoughts gentlemen?

Looks rather impressive, but the scale of objects seems to be massively off - things are way too big or small, and the speed of the ship versus the way objects approach is very disconcerting.

**** you all. I've posted this video before, in steamchat and elsewhere, and no one commented aside from Naudian.

It's Infinity: Quest for Earth. It's been in development for years now. It's the Dwarf Fortress of space mmo's. It will feature a procedurally generated universe. It's practically vapourware.

And yes it's real time.

Been interested in this game for a long time... but as Viper says it's pretty much vaporware and I have no hopes for it coming out any time soon...

I'm sad.

**** you OP.
Made me think LucasArts finally decided to make a new game only to see it's yet another topic about Infinity; a game that is NEVER going to come out ever.

I found this on their website:

A massively multiplayer online game set in a persistent, futuristic universe
Oh dear...

A lot has happened this year, probably more than in the previous years. However, most of it happened "behind the scenes" so on the surface it looked like 2010 was a slow year while in reality everybody was pretty busy.

In Q2 2010 I teamed up with Keith Newton, an ex-developer from Epic Games who worked on the Unreal Engine, and together we founded a company, I-Novae Studios, to pursue the development and commercialization of the engine and Infinity in a professional manner.

Keith has left his previous job to work full time during the whole of 2010, to set up the company structure, meet with lawyers, investors, and potential partners. He's also been handling the business and administrative side freeing me up to continue focusing on development. Keith is also a professional programmer and has helped develop a good chunk of the engine when he wasn't busy with other tasks.

In the past months we have gathered a lot of interest from major industry players. We are hoping to get our first deals finalized in 2011.

We've also decided to revise our strategy. Until now, our goal was to release the first version of Infinity, not necessarily feature-complete, and to later sell engine licenses. The priorities have changed slightly. Development of Infinity has gone under a lower priority while we work to get the I-Novae Engine production ready. Overall we see this as a benefit to you, the community, as when it's ready we would like to release a public toolset so that everyone can explore the possibilities opened up by our planetary engine and begin creating their own universes.
It seems like they're not making a game anymore, just giving us an engine so we can make a game.

Is it really that hard to add a few docking stations, basic economy, some randomly generated kill missions, then release it for $12?

An engine? Sweet... I can make my own futuristic space game filled with space dolphins, space cows, and the most dreaded space sharks.

Oh my God a space game where you can fly down into a planets atmosphere! looks amazing.

Even though it's been canned it's something future developers will surely pick up on.

Anyways, has anyone looked at Black Prophecy?

Yeah im in the beta right now. The graphics are stunning, and gameplay is ok, but the user-interface is horrible and sluggish. If they combined the interface of Freelancer and a minimalistic EvE, it would be great. The game seems kind of goal-less too, nothing to do. But i guess thats what we get when its for free.

TAKE ALL OF MY MONEY

So the combat isn't even enjoyable? Are there any RPG elements in terms of ship fittings or stats?

I've been keeping an eye on Infinity for like four or five years now. Seems cool but I'll be surprised if it ever really lives up to its potential.

The planet surface in the OP video is a thing of beauty though isn't it?

Just a little FYI: I'm working on a space combat game.

Shh....

I wish this was in the next X game or something...

The combat is fun and skills adds more diversity, but the combat itself cant hold the rest of the game up. It has ship fitting and stats, but the way its organized and managed is boring and un-interesting. I feel that most of these problems can simply be solved by an overhaul of the entire GUI, but they also need to add more content because everything is a bit repetitive "oh, i looted this item...AGAIN".

Maybe i should give it more of a harder try, but after playing on and off for about 6 hours total i finally uninstalled it. It has great potential as they nailed the atmosphere and graphics of space, so i think they should change their business model to a full AAA game that you pay for so they can hire more people and flesh out the game.
