for the time awareness challenged: sales are from 2000 onward

god I cant believe so many Lord of the Rings games made it into the top 100 ..they were excuriatingly awful

god there's a lot of weird crap ..these numbers seem to indicate that there's a lot more casual gamers than the induistry lets on: deer hunter, Survivor game, CSI, scrabble, Sim Coaster, Scooby Doo, Monopoly, Nancy Drew ...sheesh a lot of people bought Star wars galaxies ..that's a lot of dissatisfied customers

:O Barbie pet rescue is in the top 30

HL2 is # 17 ..I wonder if they took into account Steam sales. BTW Doom 3 outsold HL2 ...so did Who Wants to be a Milionaire 2 :O

wow Command & Conquer: Renegade ..a fps C&C game ..never heard of it

World of Warcraft is #3 ..guess which game is #1 :dozey:

doubt they took steam sales into account it WWTBAM2 outsold it :\
Good list though! Don't have many of those games.

Looks like a really poor list from first glance.

eg Far Cry has sold way more than 350,000. It sold 730,000 in the first 3 months.\
Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions have sold 2 million copies together.
BF1942 has sold almost 2.5 million copies, the franchise about 11 million. Battlefield 2 around 2 million copies
HL2 has sold at least 4 million copies

The list is pathetically inaccurate.

i'm glad I don't have a fraction of those games
commercial success != good game

Backyard baseball sold more than HL2? I have never even heard of that game.

wow Command & Conquer: Renegade ..a fps C&C game ..never heard of it

It was actually a lot of fun. Aside from the typical FPS games, you could sneak in and disable/steal enemy buildings so they wouldnt be able to spawn vehicles, respawns take longer and that sort of stuff. It was a lot of fun.

And Glirk steals the C&C lecture from me :D :P

Will peruse the list now..

Funny. WoW has 6 million subscribers worldwide and yet it only sold 1.4 million copies? Smells like a BS list to me. HL2 sold way, way more than 680.000.

Here are some notes on how this list works.

# Stats, ordering and research: thanks to game publishers, retail analysis sources and NPD data.
# Games are ranked by units sold; then by revenue generated. This tends to favor games released earlier, rather than later, and games which have spent a long time at a lower price point have also done well, but we wanted to reward longevity and popularity across all audiences, not just hardcore.
# In the event of a tie, games are then ranked by 'most recently released' and then by Gameranking average review scores. Special thanks to Gamerankings, just for being an exceptionally well produced resource.
# Games are ranked according to the highest selling SKU only. Otherwise the list would be full of sports iterations and big brand spin-offs and sequels. In the case of a single intellectual property being used in multiple genres of game, however, each genre’s top SKU will be represented – we want to reward taking risks with IP.
# Compendiums of disparate older PC games and shoveled shareware are not included in the list either, as we feel their success does not reflect any interesting or useful market data.
# 21st century precursors or sequels are included under the 'franchise sales' but do not affect overall placing.
# This list is for the U.S market only.
# This list only features games released since January 2000 for Windows PCs.
# Other Franchise Hits qualify if they use the same IP or character in broadly the same genre, and if they managed respectable sales of (roughly speaking) above 100,000 units.
# Franchise sales include sales of top selling sequels and predecessors.
# Revenues from subcriptions are not taken into account.

Yeah, definently not accurate. They also say in the game description they didn't count steam sales, so any steam game is underrepresented even further.

Besides, for most revenue, the winner is almost certainly WoW with over a hundred million dollars generated through subscriptions each month...

I still can't believe those figures. North America accounts for ~60-70% of game sales and HL2 has sold 3 million copies (without steam), that suggests US buyers didn't even purchase 25% of total HL2 sales. I guess they recorded NPD data so whatever, just seems like an odd list.

how do you figure US market accounts for 60%? That leaves the rest of the world at 40%? I'm sure japan's sales figures are at least half that or more

it's not really fair to compare sales as many games are released locally or in select markets only.. so yes in that scenario it may be that big of a share ..however to be accurate you'd have to look at sales globally in many markets not just a few

Games like Battlefied 1942 or many other western games would not sell that well in Japan, they probably aren't even released there as you say. Which makes me doubt the sales figures since the NA market would be the majority in those cases. Europe is fairly large but the rest of the world is a drop in the ocean.

Oh its US market only lol nooblets.

Diablo2 FTW!!!!! IN YO FACE WOW ADDICTS!!

This will make a good read in the tram on the way back home.

Keep in mind that it also sold – and continues to sell – through Steam, so these sales numbers are only part of the picture.

= not including steam sales

I wouldn't doubt if it was a hell of a lot closer to the top if they inculded thoes.

Interesting list but it would have been really cool to see the real data.

Stardog, I don't really think Pokemon has ever been big on the PC..

17.
Half-Life 2
Publisher: Vivendi Games
Developer: Valve Software
Game ranking: 95.6%

16.
Doom 3
Publisher: Activision
Developer: id Software
Game ranking: 87.2%
Pwnt.

Wait, HL isn't even on there? :|

Goes to show that to be a great selling game, you don't need a great game.

the sales figures are from 2000 to the present

hl was released in 1998
Correction: only games released since January 2000 are used.

Half-Life would have otherwise made it into the list since HL sold more the third year than it did its first year.

Am I the only one who didn't notice the FIRST Half-Life on there?

Am I the only one who didn't notice the FIRST Half-Life on there?

Rightfully so. I highly doubt you were supposed to, since this is the "Top 100 Selling PC Games of the 21st Century".

Blizzard Entertainment owns 2 of the top 3 best selling games [in the us] on the PC since 2000.
