The War of Fans

Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex: Invisible War are coming out withing HALF A MONTH of each other... yet I hardly ever see it mentioned...
 
Might look bad due to jaggy and resized screens, but too bad it'll play better than 97% of most fps games released in the last 4 years.

All I can say is I'm psyched for all the single-player goodness that's due in the next 6 months...HL2, DX2, DM3, VtM:B, weeeeeee...

Deus Ex: Invisible War will also be a good one to play through. Too much on offer in the near future. Shame there is nothing on right now hey :)
 
Deus ex too should be fun, no doubt.

But i never was all THAT impressed with its graphics to be honest. Even before HL2 news started. I dont know why. I think i expected a little too much. After all, the orriginal was great and musta got them quite abit of money.
 
Gorgon made a post with no content for which he should be flamed. I dont care what he has done in the past, go flame him somewhere else and stop spamming up the thread.

I think that article is completely biased and one-sided.

it has some merit, such as the fact that right now we can only compare the info the companies give us, and the cool screens...but you can tell he's kinda biased the way he uses a negative tone toward how half life 2 was presented, comparing it to stalin, and then saying the G-man speech didnt look realistic.

And the way he talked about all the HL2 fanboys bashing Doom III but he does not say anything about the Doom III fanboys bashing HL2.

Exactly.

The guy is, without a doubt, a Doom fanboy. He's not writing an objective article, he's writing an article to bitch at HL2 fans because they think HL2 is better. He wants his article taken seriously, but it's already painfully obvious how bias the article is without even reading it. I mean, it was written by a guy reporting from a DOOM 3 fansite. No way in hell is it going to be objective.
 
The mere fact that he used the term 'fan-boy' discredits it for me...

Yeah... And I completely want DX IW more than HL2. Because I liked DX more than HL.

I think DX IW will be like Deus Ex was. Awesome, but to the masses underrated.

I have one worry for it though... The lay out being simplified for the xbox version... makes me wonder what else they may have sacrificed...like level size or other such things.
 
its gonna simplified a little, example the inventory is gonna be much larger.

As for dx2 having crappy graphics.
Deus Ex never ever was about graphics. even part one was rather unspectacular, even tho0ugh it had its moments here and there. But every other aspect of the game was almost perfect.
As long as ion storm keeps the great gameplay for dx2, all is going to be ok for me. In a game like deus ex, graphics aren't worth much.

Everyone keeps slating doom 3 as a game based purely on graphics, based on what? Just because we havn't seen the physics engine in action doesn't meen it doesn't have one. Don't get me wrong i'm waiting for HL2 with baited breathe and i'm not overely fussed either way about D3 but i'll probably get it anyway.

I just thought that article made some good points and instantly labelling the author as one thing or another makes very little sense and has even less purpose. So he expressed an opinion you disagree with, so what? It's not as if he's insulted your mother or something. Why do people who like one game over another, or one console over another etc always take it so personally? I'll never figure it out.
 
There are very few "objective" places you could put an objective article. Just because its on a D3 site doesnt make it instantly biased.

I also read his Co-op article, and sadly its true :(

Do you think the Sven-Co-op will release thier Co-op code if they get Valve help?

It's not a bad editorial, but I think his stance is too egalitarian; basically what he's saying is "id has made cool games, Valve has made a cool game, id's next game will be cool, Valve's new game will be cool, everybody loves playing cool games, so let's all rejoice and wear pretty flowers in our hair".

I like my discussions a bit more argumentative, risky and perhaps even polarised.

And I never said That D3 will outperforme HL2.

I like both, buy both and enjoy both.

Am I one of the very few people who simply enjoys good games, and will buy things that appeal to me, even if they rival a game I like, like HL2... I'm going to buy Halo, Doom 3, HL2, DE:IW.... and many more games beside... :)

I'd like to defend some points I made, being the author of that article. And some points that apparently didn't get accross at all... well, anyway.

Ok, I'm a Doom fan. It's impossible to write a 100% objective thing when you're a fan of something, but I say that I am not a fanboy at all, and my article doesn't make any attacks on HL2.

First of all, my article's written with no sarcasm. I think ID's pr department is total shit, and they've made me scream for screenshots for years, while HL2 did a nice move, and all of a sudden we have lots of info AND the game is about to be released.

Ok, the Trotsky thing is what seems to be confusing the most people. I guess it's because people think of Stalin in a bad way, no matter where his name is used, and my example was about something else.

The whole part was actually a shot at Doom 3 fanboys. The phrase they use a lot in their dumber defenses is "Doom 3 was first and it made the genre, so how can you say HL2 is better?!" And basically I tried pointing out that it doesn't matter who is first, or who started what... It matters who got things done when they needed to be done. I heavily dislike judging importance and quality simply on the fact that someone was first.

My G-Man speech, yeah, that was a hit on HL2, I'm sorry I put that in because it didn't flow with the rest of the article. However, I stick by it, that I didn't like facial expressions in HL2, neither Gman, nor Alyx... They look awkward. And so do Doom 3's for that matter, because they seem to be too "hyper"... It's probably just an effect of an intermediate step. Technology is getting better, so there is more detail in facial features now, but it still looks awkward to me. Eh, take this as an example where pure fan loyalty determines which I think looks better... But I think every person is allowed that here and there.

Basically I wasn't talking about the games themselves here. I was talking about how information was released and handled by the fans, how it was percieved and used... I think in this War, so to speak Valve is doing a much better job at things. Comparing the games by counting features is a waste of time. I'll play it, then I'll say what I think. This article is about people trying to judge the games by counting features, by comparing how screenshots look, and by making speculations (sometimes wild) about things.
