"ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Easter Bunny has been sent packing at St. Paul City Hall.

A toy rabbit, pastel-colored eggs and a sign with the words "Happy Easter" were removed from the lobby of the City Council offices, because of concerns they might offend non-Christians.

A council secretary had put up the decorations. They were not bought with city money.

St. Paul's human rights director, Tyrone Terrill, asked that the decorations be removed, saying they could be offensive to non-Christians.

But City Council member Dave Thune says removing the decorations went too far, and he wonders why they can't celebrate spring with "bunnies and fake grass.""

on the surface I think the removal is rediculous ..but it is a public office representing the city council ..and as such shouldnt be pushing religious symbolism, not unless they're willing to do the same for all religions ...like that other religious holiday that falls during the same time frame: passover. So to summarise: easter chocolate good (secular holiday), depictions of jesus on cross = bad (religious holiday) ...in public places, in private people can do whatever they want

that said, I'm going to stuff my face full of chocolate come good friday/boring saturday/happy sunday

"Tyrone" Terrill needs to watch the South Park episode where the children's Christmas play is halted and eventually because enough groups are offended by varying things the play is children in olive drab suits spinning in circles chanting "Happy happy happy, everybody happy."

edit: Human rights need to be protected but this kind of puzzles me. What does a CITY level human rights director DO? Prevent genocide on main street? I'm seriously asking, too, not being sarcastic in bringing it up because there has to be something I'm overlooking and I'm also very tired right now.

nah it's probably just another name for the human resources director

The term human resources frightens and confuses me.

You are all resources, to be harvested and exploited!

Also silly.

I see nothing wrong with that ...in fact I truely believe some people are better off harvested for parts and melted/rendered into their base elements ...at least they're contributing more to society than they ever did while still alive

ummmmmmm soylent green

lol My mom's human resources management for Mohave Generating Station Southern California Edison

Yeah this is just ridiculous now. I'm gonna start a petition against Scientology because it offends my intelligence.

Utterly, stupendously, frightningly...stupid

so, wouldnt the Christians get offended by taking the Easter stuff down? they cant make everyone happy, so why not stick with what everyone is acustom to?

because of concerns they might offend non-Christians.

so they havent offended anyone yet? well we all know the saying of assume...

The nature of the stuff put up was fairly secular in nature anyway.

Symbolism of rebirth and such in bunnies and eggs yes, so you could associate that with Jesus if you want but it's a bit of a stretch, that stuff is mainly from older European cultures symbolizing spring.

While it's a Christian holiday it's like putting Santa Clause stuff up at Christmas. I highly doubt many of them put it up to honor the Saint Nikolas. It's just tradition/culture/festivity.

Wow me too, I was wondering what was going on.

It'll be the way I wear my hat next...

NO... noone can take that away from me! :(

Why doesn't every idiot who furthers political correctness like this get a public execution by slow torture?

My two cents.

Seriously, this politically correct bullshit is killing the world, one decision at a time.

Bunnies and chocolate eggs are as much religious as a Monty Python movie. This is just one more step towards an horrendous police state where political correctness is law and anyone caught offending anything is jailed.

Yes, but the state shouldn't sponser and encourage religion. Although it's arguable that Easter as we no it is a mere comerical event.

anyone who is offended by wide spread tradition well over a thousand years old seriously needs to be slapped in the face with a flaming double dildo. Perhaps that will recalibrate the part of their brain that determines what they get offended by.

Why do people give a shit?

Someday we will all be grey blobs and will not be permitted to make comments about how Citizen 89054 is a bit shorter than the rest of us.

Eh.. whatever, sorry, I know this thread is about Easter, but alow me to derail for a moment on a similar note:

I had to go through years of people wishing me a merry christmas and I'm just like "merry christmas to you",".. but what did religion have to do with me buying some crap from your store?", I wonder.

But it seems everyone asumes that everyone else in america is a christian. Kids are like, " so what did you get for Christmas, etc."

America is dubbed "the melting pot", with people from all over the world.

My father's parents are 96 and 98 year old practicing jews.

Here in america Christianity is so dominant that even people who aren't christian celebrate Christmas with all the presents.

People are catching on I guess. The past few years have seen shit-loads of political correctness. For a while though it was just getting on my nerves that people could be so oblivious that not everyone is a Christian.

To make my point:
Imagine buying some items at a retail store and the cashier says, "Happy Satan Day". There are devil worshipers right? So how would you feel if you were wished Happy Satan Day?

I am pretty respectful and tolerant of peoples religious beliefs.

A third of my family are practicing Christian and the other third are practicing Jews and the other third don't practice anything. I'm pretty open minded and haven't felt compelled towards either much myself.

You know, Christmas isn't really a Christian-only holiday any more. I'm agnostic, my family is not religious-- we celebrate Christmas. My friend is an athiest, his mother is an obscure Native American religion-- they celebrate Christmas. By this I mean that we get a tree and put presents under it and talk about Santa. Same deal with Easter. Bunny, candy, good times. No one I know does the church thing. We just eat candy.

Fact is, a huge amount of people celebrate Christmas and Easter, Christian or not, so its okay to say things like "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Easter" when, indeed, you are not positive that the recieving end celebrates it. Its just a thing you say. Why would you be offended by someone saying "Merry Christmas" when you're Jewish? Maybe they just mean have a Merry 25th of f*cking December. How is it degrading your religion and your way of life in any way, shape, or form? Truth: Its not, stop bitching.

But furthermore, that's not even the case. It seems that you're not allowed to mention the word "Christmas" or "Easter" in public any more. Since these holidays are celebrated by the majority, all the sudden its predjudiced to mention them in public places, as if you are "preferring" one over another. Who the f*ck gets offended when you say "Happy Channukkaaaaa?" with those candle things and the little hats? Nobody.

Everyone just likes to pretend that they are offended because they want attention.

If someone were to be offended after I said a friendly "Happy Easter" I would very much like to tell them to take their religious icon and shove it up their tight, attention-seeking, ridiculous ass. Go f*ck yourself.

The problem is, you have some idiot saying "you have to take it down, Muslims might get offended" when 99.99999% of Muslims really couldn't give two shits. Western countries should be about lots of different cultures coming together and co-existing, not an idiot worrying that a stuffed bunny toy and a chocolate egg will start rioting from extremists. I would have to have 100% with Erestheux, if you want to emmigrate to a multi-cultural society free from oppression and free to have your own views, you should atleast be willing to work hard and respect other peoples culture and views.

Yeah, worst of all is that most of the time its never a case of someone actually being offended. No. Almost always its a case of someone who has nothing to do with the group in question claiming that it might be offensive to the group.

I find people who get offended for the sake of others over trivial matters to be a major problem with the world. These people need to learn to mind their own goddamn business.

Christmas is more about getting people to buy stuff than a religious ceremony. What a shame.

Why is that a shame?

I'm not religious, I solely celebrate the holiday to see my family and exchange gifts. Someone changed Christmas into a religious-free holiday. People still celebrate it the traditional religious way, but I like to seperate the two as completely different.

Well, I laughed.

Freedom of Expression. Where has this gone to?

LOL. OMG how ironic. I wonder WWJD What would Jesus do? Commercialism stole his birthday! lol

I already said I'm very tolerant of any one's religious beliefs. You do what you want, I will do the same. I will not try to change your mind about who (or what) to worship and I would expect that they would do the same for me.

So if some Muslim working at McDonald's said "praise to Allah" "Merry Allah's birthday" to you after purchasing a ****ing Hamburger, doesn't that strike you as a bit odd? Would it bother me? No. It's just out of place IMO.

..or Satan worshiper at the electronics store saying, "It's Satan's Birthday" to you with a big smile, how is that different than saying "Merry Christmas"? I just don't see a difference, except that Christianity is the majority here. I don't know this might freak me out a bit considering I'm not a satan worshiper - if anything I'm partial to God. Granted Satan worshiping is a small minority, but similar examples could be used between major religions however; thats the point I'm making.

Say for example you are a Muslim and you are a student in school here in America, required to stand up and praise to God to the American flag in the morning (that is what we always did in school growing up, I'm not sure if this has changed by now)
This is why things change here - to be more tolerant. You guys are making it out to be the opposite!

Say for example you are a Muslim and you are a student in school here in America, required to stand up and praise to God to the American flag in the morning

Why would that offend them? It's still the same god. :p Oh, and in America, you dont "have" to do anything you dont want to.

You have to spread your legs when customs demands a full body cavity search.

But you don't have to sing the pledge of allegience to the American flag while being Cavity Searched. It's got a great tune to take your mind off of being naked in front of six uniformed men however ... OMG, that sounds so funny! :D I'm sorry. Airport Pron!

But seriously, thats a cavity search, and they do it for everyone's saftey.
