I need suggestions for games to get in the alternative timeline RTS genre (if you played Hearts of Iron you know what I mean). I want something that allows me to shape the future during a lot of years, prefferably set during some world war, and I'd like it to be turn based.

I tried Hearts of Iron 2, and that does it to some extent, but it's heavily scripted, all other nations act like they did in reality, and it was real time, meaning I never had the time to do everything I wanted to do right when I wanted.

Suggestions please. Does Civilization 3 allow you to do this kind of stuff? If so I'm getting it.

Well why not get Civ 4? Civ 4 doesn't follow any real time line so you can do what you want but you cannot influence real events or even the future as you want. However there might be a mod for it that allows you to do that. Look on around here for something you might want and then get the game.

I'm sure there was a Superpower 2 thread around here discussing geo sims and there might be some suggestions to get. I don't think many games like that exist.

Talking about Hoi2. One of its expansions added what if scenarios, you might want to check it out.

The "what if" scenarios in the HoI2 expansion were scripted too and intended for multiplayer, I want dynamic things. Superpower 2, eh?

Well from the thread it wasn't very good. I will try to find the thread for you. There is a game you might like but is in development still called Supreme Ruler 2020. There is the one before it called Supreme Ruler 2010. Its oldish you might want to try the demo.

You can have both real time and turn based at the same time. The basic idea is that whilst you do have turns everyone takes their turn at the same time. You may move an unit x distance and your enemy may see this and quickly block it off. You'd then be stuffed until the next turn where your unit can move again.

You do know that you can pause Hearts of Iron. I usually play with the game paused 50% of the time after WWII starts.

Check out the Civilization series, tons of mods for all of them... there's bound to be something that tickles your fancy somewhere.

I think the Total War series allows some what if things to take place, I could be wrong though.

I'm still fairly new to the whole 4x genre so I don't really know all that much.

You should check out Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun, it's a bit like HoI (made by the same developers), so no turn-based unfortunately, but isn't as scripted as HoI. It runs from 1836 to 1920 (1935 in the expansion pack Revolutions). You can participate in the First World War too.

My brother and I have had much fun playing this in LAN - play as USA and Soviet and become allies while taking over the world. :P

Yay, first World War. I'll definately get that/buy that, thanks.
