I'm watching Celebrity Cooking Showdown and he introduced this athlete guy as "uber."

Discuss.

I use uber in various conversations to express a measure of greatness to describe something.

Umm.. it is a real word ya know?
It's just "super" in german.

Big deal..

First of all, Uber isn't some gamer-exclusive term... This is nothing special at all. You fail.

Second of all, WTF is Celebrity Cooking Showdown? :O
And why do you consider it "mainstream"

well society just catches onto these words. theres girls in my school that use the word noob, how about that

Are they, by chance, emo?

Lot of the emo crowd here are using internet slang in every day life, that includes "pwned/owned" "noob" "double yoo tee eff" and drawing "<3" a lot.

I blame Myspace.

Wow. If I called a girl at my school a noob, she'd probably just stand there looking confused. Of course, most of the girls at my school do that anyway, but still.

Well, I've never heard it used, except on game shows.......bad game shows.

Uber as it pertains to use in English, more precisely American society, is a bastardization of the original German word. Though for the most part it is spelled the same minus the floaty dots, it is used primarily as a catch-all adjective for anything considered better than good.
It's popularization originates from forum fads and leaked into the outside world via nerds overusing the term, making people think it is cool.

Consequently, when a bunch of people think something is cool, by nature it becomes as such, hence "uber" and it's apparent mainstream acceptance.

I prefer a cutsier version... I say nooblet instead.

When I play FPS games and such, sometimes I use the name "Nooblet" for my character.

I think its HILARIOUS. HAH HAH HAH.

;(

What? They don't drop to their knees and beg for a serving?

Oh, that's patronization, btw.

It's not really surprising. A significan percentage of our words have slipped in from German, as well as french, greek, latin, spanish, etc.

I dunno, but everyone at my school knows what pwn/1337/uber/noob/pro/aggro/etc. means. Heck, half the teachers play WoW. And they say lol in real life too.

It's a boy's school, so that might account for part of it. Although most of the girls I know know what those words mean, though I don't think they use it quite as often. I think 'pwn' is probably the most often used word in my class, if you don't count 'a' or 'the'.
