How does someone chop of your hand and the first thing you notice is numbness and your mouse cursor stop moving? Even if you somehow miss the blood, the shooting pain and the... "jerk" of the arm as its sliced in two, your peripheral vision has to be pretty crappy if you miss someone raising a stake knife of whatever and bring it down on your arm.

Reminds me of one time when I cut my hand slightly on something on the outer side, while playing HL2DM. It was really nothing big, so I didn't bother to apply a plaster or anything and kept on playing. Really, the pain takes several seconds to be felt when it is so intense. If you are focused on the screen I would say that this is what I would expect to happen.
