The Puss of the Baskervilles?

LONDON (Reuters) - A London man trying to coax his cat back into the house before he went to bed got more than he bargained for.

Instead of a tame pussy, the cat-like creature that emerged from the bushes in response to his calls was nearer the size of a Labrador dog.

Neither was the snarling beast in the mood for a quiet bowl of milk. It flew at the man, giving him the fright of his life, and several nasty scratches.

The man alerted police after scrambling back into his house.

Officers who visited the scene soon afterwards believe they saw the culprit.

"One police officer believes they saw a large black cat-like animal approximately the same size as a Labrador dog," a police spokesman said.

London Zoo was contacted for advice later on Tuesday morning and schools were alerted.

So far, no further sightings have been reported.

Librarian Sues Harvard Over 'Pretty' Bias

Link

BOSTON - A Harvard University librarian claims in a lawsuit that she has been rejected repeatedly for promotion because she is black and is perceived as just a "pretty girl" whose attire was too "sexy.
As a jury was chosen Monday to decide her federal lawsuit, Desiree Goodwin said she's been rejected for 16 jobs at Harvard since 1999, when she completed her master's degree in library science after attending night classes at Simmons College for 4 1/2 years.

Goodwin, 40, also has a master's degree in English literature, seven years of experience in the library of Boston College and another nine years as an assistant librarian at Harvard.

"I feel no matter how much education I achieved or how many contributions I made, there was nothing I could possibly do that would impress them so that they would open the door for me to allow me to advance," Goodwin said during a court recess.

She said she was shocked when, in late 2001, her supervisor told her she would never be promoted at Harvard. In court documents, Goodwin said her supervisor told her she was "a joke" at the university's main library, where she "was seen merely as a pretty girl who wore sexy outfits, low cut blouses, and tight pants."

She said after the conversation with her supervisor, she modified her appearance and wore more conservative clothing, but she continued to be turned down when she applied for better positions.

Goodwin says in her lawsuit that she has suffered emotional distress and lost $150,000 in wages as a result of Harvard's failure to promote her since 1999.

Harvard denies that it has discriminated against Goodwin. University spokesman Joe Wrinn would not discuss the case Monday, citing the impending trial. But in earlier interviews, Wrinn noted that Goodwin's case was dismissed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.

"This case is without merit," Wrinn said just after Goodwin filed her lawsuit in 2003. "Gender and race were not factors."

A jury of seven men and one woman was chosen to hear the case, with opening statements scheduled for Tuesday.

At the encouragement of U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro, lawyers for both Goodwin and Harvard huddled in the court hallways Monday to discuss a possible settlement. Neither side would comment

'Easter Bunny' Arrested for Harassment

Link

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - The bunny trail led to trouble for a mall Easter Bunny who got upset at a co-worker, police said.

Michael J. Desantiago Sr., 36, of Council Bluffs, was arrested Saturday at the Mall of the Bluffs where he had a job dressed as the Easter Bunny. He told officers he became upset when someone threw water and other items at him, police said.

Desantiago left the area, changed clothes and came back to tell a fellow employee he was leaving. The employee told police that Desantiago "got up in her face and started to yell at her."

Desantiago threatened another person if he didn't get out of his way, police said.

He was charged with two counts of harassment.

Hmmm nothing really funny,

ha, i have seen a large black cat on 2 occasions in somerset, and i'm not crazy.

First time we were out at night hunting rabbits with a lamp when we heard a rustling, upon pointing the lamp in the area of the rustling we saw a large black cat (about the size of a large dog), startled by the light jumping over a wall into a churchyard.

Second time i was on my own in the same area (a track about 20 meters away from the first sighting) and again it was dark, i could see an animal stop in the track and duck down.......i got a bit closer and could see it was clearly a jet black large cat, i wasn't sure if it was going to move, pounce on me or what so i picked up a few stones from the path and threw them in its direction.....as soon as they hit the ground near it, it bolted through the bushes to the side of the path....making a lot of noise and going quite fast.

I went the next day with my dad to where i had seen it and we found some animal tracks that where the size of large dog prints but where typically cat.

Scary, these big cats in the country are seen too often to be hoaxes surely. They are mainly bought on the black market, then grow too big and are let free where this stuff happens, which is really troubling. If i was in your situation recoil i'd need a change of underwear soon after.

I've never seen anythiong hoaxy, tho i did watch te very british UFO hoax on channel four.

That was Absolutly amazing ;)

hahahaha....

i dunno, wasnt there something about a big cat in the moors a while back?

Yeah, even in the US here we've heard about Brits talking about big cats wandering around.

ummm dont jump all over me, but there's quite a few "hunting" groups that import big cats (panthers, cougars etc) so that they can be hunted for sport it's called canned hunting and is freakin disgusting ...they're usually shot while in a cage for the thrill of it ...this could have been a cat that got away

I edited the link cuz there was a link to a few videos of the actual kills ...for a split second I was wishing for the hunters gun to backfire

Yeah, but why do they always say its a large black cat though, and why is it always in Britain?

well I dont know ...maybe it is the hound of the baskervilles

We're on about UK mainly here for big cat sightings, thats a load of crazy yanks.

In my opinion panthers and jaguars e.t.c are mainly escaped/abandonned illeagal pets or zoo escapee's that have bred.

Breeding would not be very common but i'm sure they would be very wary of humans, the ones i saw (might have been same one) were certainly scared of me.

I'm pretty sure it happens all over the world ..well at least in countries where people can afford it. But you're right the problem is worst off in the US and south africa ...btw the majority of the people who do canned hunting are the rich ...including some pretty famous people:

Dick Cheney

"Scott Wakefield, a dog handler at the club, said about 500 farm-raised pheasants were released from nets for the morning hunt. The 10-man hunting party that included Cheney shot 417 pheasants. "

bush:

"President George Bush celebrated his victory after the 1988 election at the Lazy F Ranch near Beeville, Texas.
"These aren't animals, these are wild quail," he later responded to criticism."

Eh, I take offense at doing canned-hunting at big game (especially when they're endangered or rare species), but I can't really have much sympathy for quail and pheasents since I just had chicken for lunch.
Anyway...back on topic?

Hey stern are you offended by me hunting wild boar in the south of england with a bowie knife?

Now thats a fair challenge!
i weigh 225 lbs and a fully grown boar can weigh 350 :)

I'm not offended, but you may need to get your head checked. And I'd hate to be your insurance company.

see, I live in a place with Bobcats, Panthers, Alligators, and wild boar.

Ain't nothing unusual.
