i jus finished watching return of the king and its put me in the mood for a lord of the rings game...and then i sudenly realised there arnt any half decent lotr games out there. i thot a hl2 mod wud be cool if it was done well but i didnt no if anyone was planning on doin one or had even thot about it. Anyone know if theres one planned or anything?

Uhm.. there is a LOTR: ROTK game out by EA. It's actually quite good (in my opinion)

didnt think so...guess i'll wait for battle for middle earth

I would love someone to make some kind of rpg in source.. that would be awesome..

If anyone's listening, it's got to have rogues and assassins in it...

With throwing knives....

And and...

be interesting to see if they can make an effective rpg in source...i remember a mod that tried once with hl1 and...well the less said about it the better

Lord of the rings is far too epic.

The only decent ones would be Battle for Middle earth, and an MMORG.

It's definitely possible, with the emotion engine and so on, it's highly suited for some aspects of RPGs, it just comes down to the skill of the mod makers. :)

There are some guys working on a medieval mod for HL2 though it's very early in development. It's not even planned out really, so anything could happen to it.

But yes modders seem to be steering clear of the fantasy aspect.

Riding horses as vehicles, flying dragons as vehicles, playing an archer class who can pin dudes onto walls, kill 2 guys with one shot, have skills and levels (like diablo 2), play as a sword wielding knight, a wizard,......surely stuff like that would be fun.

Maps would include taking a fort (helms deep style), opening a portal to draenor by defeating the evil orcish hordes (lol), tearing a rift open between Valhalla and Asgard. That was extremely random, but there are so many ideas!!

It would be like a MMORPG compacted into a 32 player game. I think that would be insanely addictive if done correctly.

One problem, can we expect players not to jump around corners, work in teams, not whore the good weapons, no we can't. So it SOUNDS fun, but think of how everyone would be a archer and just charge enemies and fire arrows while bunny-hopping.

True, but that's what clan play is for.

This is an issue every HL2 mod faces that incorporates vehicles and other new and wonderful things. The "BF1942 syndrome", where tards are drawn to it like moths to a light on a warm summer night.

"OMFG TEH HORSE!!! I"M GONNA CAMP THE STABLE FOR THE WHOL ROUND AND RIDE TEH HORSE IF ANYONE GET MY HORSE I'll CAST LEVEL 8 PENIS FURY AND KILL TEAMMATESSSS WHO TRY AND tAKE TEH HORSE"

If pub play cannot be fun the game will get no where. Which is why it has to be done right!!

i would think the pple that own LOTR stuff would be angry if no permission is asked first..even then.. i doubt there would an LOTR for Source.

who knows i could be wrong :)

how can u ppl watch the LOTR movies theere so boring and long

That isn't true, there are lots of small battles in the books and they don't have to follow the books, it could even be a single player mod.

I think you might need to invest in some ritalin.

Havn't any of you guys seen the LOTR Counterstrike maps? I used to play thema ll the time. Obviously completely diferent than what you want, b/c your using guns instead of swords, but...

LotR's was great, anyone who says otherwise is a nappyrash :p

And anyone wanting to do a Source mod of LotR's might aswell give up now. You'll succeed in annoying far too many people because it simply couldn't be done to the kind of scale it would need to be to be considered serious. So yeah, don't waste your time doing one. Even middle earth online is failing.

yes it would be insanely addictive, maybe you should check out #hlmedieval =P, this is pretty much what we are doing

we're finished with the design docs and beta plans (order of how we're constructing the game) and we're working pretty hard

also, getting site/domain and new name up pretty soon. #HLMedieval @ QuakeNet

If you are ever going to have Tolkien in a FPS-RPG or (better) a RTS - then forget the films, base it in the ages of The Silmarillion. Every Tolkien fan knows that, as far as RTS go, the Silmarillion has far more to offer! : Everything in the LOTR and more (except the One Ring)

If anyone was planning a LOTR mod then I'm not to sure how they would go getting permission to make the mod with copyright and LOTR being such a BIG HIT!

What you say Robert is true. I doubt you could ever get LOTR permission - that's gold mine land. What Fenric says is true too : don't bother as you will never be able to satisfy the fans, you'd upset too many people. The films we're quite rubbish as a fan goes, I mean, the visuals were amazing, and the vision of Tolkien was awe inspiring. The amount of creative power that went into the LOTR films was amazing and I have the up most respect for them in that regard. But as far as the story and spirit went – I was saddened. I guess at least it got people to read the books(though I hate that they made so much money from it). As for the games EA are making, well ... I suppose it all doesn't really matter in the eyes and opinions of the Tv-tanned masses.

I think it would be very easy to make a medieval mod in Source!! The medieval mod for HL1 is MasterSword, I used to play it alot!! Check it out, very nicly done (its kind of a total conversion)!!

Sorry, can't find therie web page, but you can get it on fileplanet!

Exactly. Why bother trying to copy the settings and characters from a popular franchise when you can just create your own?

I'm completely puzzled by the dearth of creativity going around. The source engine has the potential to be used for just about anything, but all I hear is AVP, LOTR, Starcraft and other mods of currently popular franchises.

You could totaly do a LOTR mod, BUT...............

Why not do it from the perspective of some one not really known in the movies or the book.

Maybe from the perspective of one of the soldiers who partakes in missions that were not scene in the books or the movies that could have very well happened. You could even have camios (spelling) by some of the Famous characters, but in an overal since your just an ordinary soldier who has been given extra ordinary tasks that need to be done.

Maybe, you play as one of the elf warriors in a setting that leads up to when the ring was first lost, sort of a Pre-LOTR......

Gosh, NO ONE here plays Sven Co-op? There are a couple of maps based on LotR. One is Moria, the other is Helm's deep. You basically use a crowbar (modelled as a sword), a wrench (modelled as an axe) and a crossbow to kill pit drones and alien slaves with different skins (slaves don't shoot, but drones do). There are also some shock troops and very large and very tough alien grunts. And 1 garg...

Not a terribly serious or 'epic' pair of maps, but fun nonetheless
