There aren't enough servers.

I've been trying to play for 45 minutes.

Only been in one game with a bunch of Swedes.

It was laggy as hell.

Going to strangle someone.

That's a shame. So many people complaining about their severs not getting filled and the demo launch was the prime opportunity to get players first and potentially logged as their 'favorite'.

Well, it just unlocked an hour and a half ago, calm down... give it time.

Of course I'll give it time, am I not allowed to vent my frustrations here?

I only just got home from school. I thought I was about to play, then it started updating and now I am raging even before I start the game.

AND NOW THE UPDATE IS FROZEN THREE QUARTERS THROUGH RRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE

There is an issue with the linux server builds, and updates are being applied as we speak. Hardly anyone is able to join servers properly. So stop trying for now and wait. This is the purpose of the demo really, it's going to have teething problems. Once things like this are rectified we're going to have a pretty faultless experience I'm sure.

This happens to most big releases, who remembers when the Steam log-in server went down on the Half-life 2 launch? Couldn't even log in! At least we're not there ;)

Patience people.

Both times I've tried to play over a network, I've gotten most of the way through the 2nd map when the lag monster strikes and things quickly become unplayable. I'm on a fast network, and this doesn't happen in the least when I play a single-player game.

Making me quite sad.

First time was another server, second time was my own server.

It's obviously the server issue then Silarn. Wait for the fix.

Yup, guys just be patients. This is why things get released early work out those last few problems.

Yeah, but he said Linux server builds, and I'm most definitely not on Linux. And the issue wasn't connection to the server but ridiculous lag starting for no apparent reason in the middle of the game.

Aside from that, I've had a good time thus far.

Does anyone have any links on server company's providing Left4Dead servers?

Yeah, but he said Linux server builds, and I'm most definitely not on Linux. And the issue wasn't connection to the server but ridiculous lag starting for no apparent reason in the middle of the game.
The servers run on Linux, not you ;)

Ive not been able to get on a dedicated server yet, but me and my friends took the LAN option, which 3 out of 4 attempts worked online, (one occasion it said you cant play on LAN servers over the net, which was odd seeing as the other 3 times worked).

Well, I wasn't able to connect to a dedicated server now, was I? The games I played were primarily "LAN" (player-run (listen?)). (No doubt due to the issues with the dedicated servers.) The strange thing was that some games/maps ran just fine while others were beyond laggy. And it wasn't always the same one. Sometimes the first map lags, sometimes the second. It's rather strange, really.

Because the dedicated servers run on linux. Linux servers aren't working. Thus, you can't connect to dedicated servers.

Do you understand?

Yeah, I got that.

But I'm not talking about the dedicated servers. So stop acting like I am.

My issues are with listen servers, and if it always performed badly I'd just say 'oh, well it's too much to host and play at the same time.' But it DOESN'T always perform badly. Sometimes it's perfectly fluid and others it's ridiculously laggy. And not always in the same places.

Yeah, I got that.

Are you sure about that?

Pretty sure you're talking about dedicated servers there, which is what I was responding to.

As for your earlier post...

You didn't specify that the first one was or was not a dedicated server (or, for that matter, that "your own server" wasn't dedicated either; A lot of people run their own dedicated servers).

In any case, you neglected to mention it until the end of your post, and put it under a line that makes it look like part of your sig.

Next time, be more clear. And if you treat people like they're stupid, they'll treat you like you're stupid right back, so drop the attitude.

That being said, your real issue is either with your connection, your ports, or your hardware. Upgrade your hardware (and/or drivers), your connection, or forward the correct ports, and you should stop having problems.

Then I suggest you read more than the first sentence, because that was merely a lead-in to clarifying that my problems were based upon LAN/listen servers.

And if it was truly a hardware issue, the problem wouldn't be intermittent. I shouldn't play a map perfectly fine one time and then have it tank the next, with the same people connected.

Are you thick? I was explaining WHY you couldn't connect to dedicated servers. God forbid I try to shine some light on the situation.

Yes, it would be, if the game spawned different amounts of zombies in different areas. More zombies = more strain on the server. Since the game spawns different enemies in different areas in different amounts at different times, performance-based problems likely AREN'T going to happen in the same exact place every time.

What does
(No doubt due to the issues with the dedicated servers.)
mean to you?

All I'm saying is you are telling me something I already plainly knew.

And trust me, it is not a hardware issue. My PC more than matches the recommended system, by a good margin. I have seen massive zombie hordes running perfectly smoothly while the game started to have ungodly lag in (and between) areas of near vacancy.

There is a leak somewhere.

Maybe not a hardware issue, but a driver issue? I updated to the latest nVidia drivers and it solved a lot of problems...

I didn't have problems playing single player, either.

I'm trying to offer possible explanations, but all you seem to want to do is argue.

Your loss.

Unless there's a beta newer than what I've got now, my drivers are up to date. I don't think there is an explanation. It's just a bug that has to be fixed.

And no, I'm not using a beta driver right now.
