"Back from the Grave!"
The "They Hunger: Source" idea is back from the grave. Valve has been in contact with us and they support the idea of TH:S. This was an important first step towards making this a viable project, but we still have to work out many other factors. We will keep you informed of any significant developments.

Good news but I bet you will have to pay for it like DoD:S and HL:Source.

That would be criminal if you had to pay... but i hope that TH:S wont end up in some wierd science facility like BioHazard.

Are they going to revamp the old TH or build a new one from scratch? :O I hope the latter.....

I'm confused, why do they need Valve's blessing to create a free mod?

Well its like a 2 to 1 chance that TH will be in fact free but since they charged for DOD, I don't know what to think.

Are they going to revamp the old TH or build a new one from scratch?

They are building a new one. He said it a while back.

Well, unless this new version is substantially better than the originals, I see no compelling reason to pay for it.

"Manke" said that he wouldnt remake any of his classics unless it was alot more than simply a direct port, valve simply said they would "support" him, which they have offered with garrysmod too I believe.. Payment is just a rumour with no weight to it.. valve's just eager to support the community; they may not get games out on time, but they honestly do try to help the community, they realise how much of their business is generated by mods with hl1, they want to jump-start/accelerate this with hl2, make a real effort with it and try to improve on a duplication of what occured by itself with the original hl

that was a really odd mod for hl. (IMO)

but hopefully this one will be good :)

What I really want is TS:S :D

Gah, trust this place to immediately presume that Manke will force the community to pay for it. The Sven Co-op team have contacted Valve on occasion and they have no plans (currently :p) to make you pay for SC2. Admittedly that news post implies something less simple than mere advice... almost as if he's requesting permission. He might've been asking for something as simple as confirmation on how easily such and such could be added/ported/painted onto a plank of wood, however.

...anyway, yay for the prospect of They Hunger on the Source engine!

I have to go and try out all three versions of They Hunger.

I highly...extremely....100% doubt that Manke is going to make us pay. That defies all logic. He could, however, create a sequel or prequel and charge for that through Steam. Not illegal according to what Valve told us they had in mind.

thats very cool news. But if they want people to pay for it I hope they fix that bug where it just wouldn't continue past a certain map, atleast thats the problem I always had, which didn't bother me when it was free.

Hmmm, I may have encountereds this problem last night. I downloaded TH after reading about it yesterday (all 3 episodes) and extracted onto my HL steam folder. Anyhoo, I played it until an area where the floor collapsed. I couldn't find a way out so checked a walkthrough :- It told me to climb up through a window..... This was impossible. I always get stuck! So, any way to "noclip"? I tried this and it didn't work.

How did you get TH to work on Steam!? I can't do it! :(

Sheer luck. It didn't work through HL (no custom game option), so I went to the steam games window and THey Hunger had appeared. I ran it - but the usual HL screen appeared - I started new game, on training I think, and TH3 started. I then tried "medium" and TH1 started!

It should be noted that I downloaded all three in one 64mb exe from FilePlanet. Don't know if that makes a difference.

Do a search for "they hunger faq". It is on PlanetHalfLife I believe. It may also help.

Can anyone post a couple of TH3 save games please? I've just finished 1 & 2 but for some reason 3 crashes out during the intro to 3. Perhaps it'll be ok once the game proper is started. Anyone have one? Thanks!

I don't like the idea of having to pay for mods, mods are what keep games and their fanbases alive (sequels too) which is one of the reasons why Half Life is such as popular series.

Mods should be freely available to a community of gamers, if the gamers are forced to pay to play mods, it is no longer a community, it becomes exclusive.

I've never tried the they hunger series..should I try them?

I played 'The Gate'..wich is the best SP mod I ever played..

I only played the beginning of they hunger.. where you crash into water with a car if I remember correctly..

Want to know whats funny? I was the one who actually fixed the problem. After Valve didn't contact Neil, I emailed Valve asking about this and they said they never got the message. I then told Neil about what Valve said. Then Valve or Neil recontacted the other and finally got through. Oh and if you think I am making this up, I still have the emails I sent and recieved from both Neil Manke and Valve. Or you could ask about this situation. The Planet Half-Life article mentions my name, "Kevin" thus Kschreck on these forums. Anyways I was glad to help out because the They Hunger series was awesome and I really enjoyed them.

eh, you told us that why? lol. fixed what problem?

I emailed Valve asking them how come they have not contacted Neil Manke regarding the help on a They Hunger Source project. Valve didn't even know Neil Manke tried to contact them and Neil Manke thought that Valve just didn't want to help out (Read Through Neil's Earlier Messages). In turn if I never emailed Valve to ask about the helping with the project and then telling Neil what Valve said, They Hunger Source would have either not ever become a possible or would have been delayed for a lot longer worth of time.

In a short update on a They Hunger mod for Source, Neil Manke had this to report yesterday:

We look forward to hearing more good news from Black Widow Games, hosted right here at Planet Half-Life.

Thanks to Kevin for keeping his eyes open.

Anyways it was no big deal. I just saw this post and thought I'd post about this. Oh and congrats "The Dark Elf" on the amount of posts you made. Thats quite a bit of support you've shown for the forums in the last past couple years. Most posts i made was a little over 3600 on one of my own forums places www.zogdog.com

Thats all pretty much true. Valve will do anything to encourage the mod scene and considering the original TH was pretty big, this is going to be the same. Valve shouldn't charge for any 3rd party mods though.
