Things in/about games that annoy you

Call of Duty games were the best for defend a point for x amount of time, Pegasus Bridge on the first CoD as the mighty Brits was the most memorable, although stupidly hard on the higher difficulties.

Games which seem like they were constructed or ported in a half-arsed attempt. Gears of War for Windows seems like a fine example :hmph:

Games where every location looks the exact same as everything else in that level, eg, Gears of War. Oh look, a lovely grey and brown courtyard *turns a corner* Wasn't I just here? Oh look more locust to shoot. Oh look another grey and brown courtyard.

I'm surprised Halo didn't come up top

The thing that annoys me are levels that do not have an actual purpose or function.

Save points. I mean, i don't mind save points, but only if i can save wherever i want. It bores me when i have to replay the same stage over and over again only because i didn't reach the damned save point.

I don't mind this when I'm playing on a console. I half expect not to have savepoints when I'm playing a console game. But when developers port games to a PC from a console, they leave half of the console features in which just don't work! Gears of War is an example of this.

On the other hand, it's quite enlightening playing a console like game on a PC. That is something I did enjoy about Gears of War. I almost felt like I owned a 360.

Playing Mass Effect and OH GOD INABILITY TO ****ING SKIP CUTSCENES oh god :(

Missions in RTS games where you have only one unit/a tiny squad and can't build. Often you have to sneak around and destroy and entire base (I'm looking at you Nod!)

that still annoys me

they should be able to coexist seamlessly like in deus ex

What's wrong with quick-throwing grenades?

Gear up with a rifle, webbing, spare magazines, flack jacket, frags, etc and tell me how quickly you can draw, pull the pin on and throw a grenade (or better yet, unscrew the cap on and pull the string on a German Potato Masher frag). When you're a superdooper future commando with power armour and personal shields, fair enough. But when you're a WWII conscript soldier? Come on...

Anyway,

Games that market themsleves as realistic when they really, really arn't. Especially those with illustrious histories of realistic games that then loose it all somewhere down the line (R6, GR, etc).

Bad Voice Acting (seriously, sometimes its worse than having no voice acting)

The inevitable token stealth mission. Especially in Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising. I've got a mother *&^@ing nano bot infested super criuser jobby. Why the hell do I want to be stealthy?

"Robot Arm" interfaces. Sure, I only ever remember Trespasser actually using this, but it was still damn annoying.

RPGs that give the illusion of choice. In dialogues were the options end up sounding exactly the same, Mass Effect. Or were the game forces you to make a certain choice, while stringing you along making you think you could choose, when in fact you can't.

How about when Gameplay is above story?

I probably won't care. I can play a game with absolutely no story and have a good time. But a game with the most ****ing incredible story that is absolutely shit gameplay I will not. That is what books are for.

What? You lie!

Shooting in the game as abysmal, it's so boring and all of the guns have terrible accuracy... crouching or not.
They all feel fairly sluggish too.

To add another peeve to the list :

Timed missions that require the player to find something/defuse stuff in an certain amount of time or get a fission mailure.

Fortunately video games aren't restricted by realism. They'd be shit if they were.

I'm all for quick nades, instant melee, and rechargeable health/shields.

But gunplay was the only thing that was bad about Deus Ex.

Time limits make me sad. ;(

Also, this new motion-sensor gimmick we've got running rampant. The Wii remote is good for one thing and one thing only... aiming (cursor or a gun or whatever).

Stupid AI (Codename:Gordon)
Stupid gameplay (Codename:Gordon)
No saves\bad saving (Codename:Gordon,American McGee's Alice)
High minimum requirements
High prices\Piracy
Bugs (Rayman Raving Rabbids - PC)
Stupid story (unless it's a racing game or DOOM)
Unnecessary story (Need for Speed:Carbon)
Boring gameplay (American McGee's Alice)
Stupid damn jumping puzzle in a FPS (Peaces Like Us Mod for Half-Life 1)

Things that I love:
Easter eggs (Grand Theft Auto)
Good game design (American McGee's Alice,Peaces Like Us,Chicken Invaders,Portal)
Realistic look
Branch story (True Crime: Streets of L.A.,The Witcher)
Innovative gameplay (Audiosurf,The Witcher,Half-Life 2.2,Portal)
Good sound work (American McGee's Alice,Portal (english, french versions))

Press space to skip conversations.

CUTSCENES you douche o_O

Admittedly it's hard to tell which is which but GOD DAMNIT I DON'T WANT TO SEE ANOTHER REGIMENT OF ALLIANCE MILITARY BEING SLAUGHTERED AGAIN

/EDIT I must say though, I love Mass Effect's Cover/Combat system, though I don't quite have the hang of it just yet.

Alice had awesome gameplay.
Quirky level design, nifty puzzles, I mean ffs... you play as a chess piece in one level!

annoying and/or repetitive looping music
Yes!Yes!Yes!!!
There are so little really good ambients. Most of the loops are annoying.
About Steam...I had to wait half a year before I got a bandwidth.56k modem with a time fee is not created for games. At least, for Steam games. That's why I am so attached to Diablo I.

My pet peeve is games that lack any of the features that anybody else has complained about in this thread.

lol wut? Hostile Waters came out way before it was customary to add a stealth mission, so it wasn't just a "token" thing. Consequently, the stealth mission was amazingly fun, and actually introduced a game mechanic that comes to be really useful later in the game - I always used to use a cloaked buggy with some buzzsaw kinda weapon to take out enemy oil derricks. It's not just a poorly-designed one-off thing. It's yet another excellent dimension to an excellent game.

Wow, you must hate yourself for liking crappy games then. :p
