I know everyone here loves half life to death, and the half life games are a masterpiece, but every masterpiece has its flaw(s). So I'd like to know what you guys hated about the half life games, be it a character, weapon, level, whatever.

P.s. Sorry if this has been done before.

Everything was shit. Everything was amazing. /thread

Seriously. One man's flaw is another man's beauty. This is why developers don't like to read forums about their own games. You can never please everyone.

Nope. I like On A Rail. The only chapter I dislike in Half-Life is Residue Processing.

I think the main problem with HL is it doesn't know what it's doing. For example there's these snark tripmines that a lot of people don't even remember exist. They're like little floating brown rocks with lightning forking out of it and with webbing stuff around it too. If you attack the rock bit or try to walk past the lightning it breaks open and releases a bunch of snarks. Like I said earlier most people don't even remember these damn things because they only appear in one part of a single map and are forgotten again.

It's like a map maker came up with a neat idea, put them all there and then didn't tell anyone else working on the game about them and they just went and put different random other things in other maps. This is my only big problem with HL, there's a bunch of random ideas that are never really fleshed out instead of the fewer, perfectly worked ideas that appear in HL2.

I remember these but if you asked me to go and find them in the game again I wouldn't have a clue.

There are some interesting areas in Office Complex and On A Rail that can be completely overlooked as well. I did my 4th play-through a while ago and found things that were new to me.

I see theres a lot of on a rail hate out there. Strange, since its one of my favorite levels. And stylo, you cant please everyone, but you can please vast majorities.

Ignore Calhoun, ON A RAIL is one of my favourite chapters. There're so many interesting areas to explore in the abandoned tunnels.

Yeah, why is everyone criticizing on a rail? Seriously, it's pretty cool, I remember when you get the HECU turret and mow down marines. Honestly the only part I didn't like was xen, I got stuck...for a while.

It's the name of the chapter, not the actual design of it. They should have made it less obvious. Personally, I would've called it, "Underground Action," or something.

Underground Action? That's horrendous. On A Rail is a good chapter name.

Half-Life 1's major flaw is some slightly tedious level design, but overall this is still a masterpiece.

Half Life 2's major flaw is sporadic difficulty level. Sometimes it is pretty tricky but most of the time it is relatively easy.

I didn't like Residue Processing. On A Rail was fun, but each level was similar and seemed too easy to get lost in.

The tediousness is part of what makes the half life 1 levels so immersive in my opinion.

True but there's not going to be a vast majority that hate a particular thing about Half-Life because it was a great game. The thread is proving my point as it goes along. "We all hate On A Rail!" / "On A Rail is cool!".

Unless the game is complete shit and has some serious issues it's not really going to have anything but personal opinions in divided camps. I wouldn't really say that because there was things I didn't like about a game that it was something 'wrong' with it.

Just saying.

On a rail was a great level. The only hardship is that the first time through, it's the longest level in the first half of the game. It's also like one long puzzle on a track. And I agree that Residue Processing is a pain in the ass. It really comes out of nowhere and tries to smoosh you for a half hour.

I'm one of those people who have no clue what you're talking about. What level was that in?

As for On A Rail, I wasn't a fan. It was a little tedious to get off and run around, flip some switches, and then go back and get your tram. Several times. I know you can technically get through without the tram but I always try to play it "properly." I've only completed all of HL1 once, but started 5+ times. I always quit around either On A Rail, or Lambda Core. I also recall strongly disliking that part in Xen where you're on the big floating island with a bunch of Vorts and you have to jump onto those floating platforms/mantas.

HL2 had a lot less of the tedium. Maybe Anticitizen One was a little bit so, but nothing particularly sticks out. So I managed to finish HL2 three times, which might be the most replays I've gotten out of any game.

"Forget About Freeman"
I think it's this map (I had a screenshot and description in our wiki but apparently the wiki is gone :( )

Ah, thanks. I remember it now... rather unfondly, as I hated snarks :p.

On a rail great. Residue processing disappointing. So unrealistic! Guts on a conveyor belt???
I was a little dissatisfied with the way they squirmed out of the HL1 ending in HLE1, but the next two episodes were so awesome that it's ok.

We all know Half life was awesome but like its been said before the "Floating" Rails =D

I was fine with those chapters, I just thought that there was 1 pojnt in the lack of realism.... the fact that enemies with guns are ALLWAYS near explosives, yes you all know what I am talking about

That sounds like a kinky porno.

I thought the AI of the Barneys was really annoying. I always went out of my way to get them to follow me and try to protect them, but they would always get in my way or get themselves killed. I thought, them having some actual gun training, they would've been of more use!

HL2 fixed a lot of that, having (still) one of the best AI's i've ever seen!

Btw I recently played Halo1, thinking it might be a classic like HL1, but wow how disappointed I was. Absolutely tedious and boring level design, and the monsters don't as much as flinch when getting shot! I stopped playing after 2 levels!
HL's pacing is brilliant on the other hand, I first played it about 6 years ago, and recently went thru it again. Still amazing!

If we're talking about Half-Life 1, I'd just about say all of Xen.

I don't like all the levels. It made me lost such as We've Got Hostiles level where in the vents. That made me lost and had to restart the game.
