With the advents put forward with Half Life 2 a new sort of video game could be constructed, and in my opinion, if such a game were made it would become quite popular. I just need to find out how to sell the idea to someone who will listen and has the power to make it happen. This isnt some custom fitted game just for me, this is a large story I have been working on for years, that I someday wanted to make into a movie but now realize could be made into a game like none other. I talked about my ideas on it in the general editing thread but now I want to actualize them. Hear me out...

The game has no real narrative of itself, except what is broadcast on television. See, the game would recreate a large bustling city (with different sections) in which you live. The city would have strict emergent properties. (an emergent property is something that comes out of a group behavior and could not be present with just any one member. such as a flock of birds or a swarm of bees) Such emergent properties would govern an actual working system in this city, such as a law system, an active and actual media system, taxi service, mail service, etc. As well as the people who live in the city, they would be subject to group mentality based on individual AI encounters with the player or antagonist NPCs. (NPC's play a large role in this, with HL2's facial system NPC's can act out scripted movie like sequences such as press confrences and media events as well as public demonstrations and even personal stories with meaning and conviction)

Because, at the point when the player gets acustomed to the city, its workings and such and how actions play into consequences, all hell breaks loose. During perhaps the second week living the in city (game time) when the player is out doing things (too much to mention now) large space crafts enter orbit, you will see them but at a distance, not like in ID4. The media system will be taken over and a general message will go out to the people. It would be a greeting message from an alien race. They would extend their offer of peace and wish to meet for an exchange of technology as they are a nomadic group. Relinquishing control the new telecast would come back on (there would be varios televisions everywhere, and at someplace in the city a news center would be located, complete with reporters, anchors, camera men and helicopter.) the anchor would talk about the space ships for a bit with various camera coverage, the space ships themselves would lower further into the atmosphere. After a short while, with general news coverage, a press conference with the president is set up. He adresses the people and says he wants to extend his hand in freindship towards the aliens. One of the ships lands, leaving two others higher up and one final one, larger then the others, still in orbit. This would be clear to see in the sky, and if the player attends the press conference they would see the aliens and the people meet peacefully. But then everyone looks up to the sky, and a small blip of light crosses from the horizon and imacts one of the two ships in the air, in a brilliant explosion the main remaineder falls to earth taking out several large buildings in the process.

The aliens quickly retreat to their ship and it takes off, shooting at the people and buildings as it goes. Military and police, already on the scene, fire at the ship and try to calm the people. Suddenly the other ships, the one in the air and the one high up in orbit start decending, the news cast on tv further explains the story that people arent quite sure who fired the nuclear missle.

The people go nuts, hordes and hordes or people looting and screaming and fighting the police. The military further advances, and up in the sky the two space ships are met by the larger one, nearly ten times their size. The three ships now begin firing at any aproaching aircraft, sending planes and helicopters falling into the busy metropolis. Through all this the player is either on foot and running past televisions in store fronts or on fronts of buildings, if they are driving they can listen to the radio news. At this point the game is survival. I wont go too much further other then to say that this escalates much further. You much survive in this city as the aliens destroy it and fight with the military, while the people in hordes and ganges loot and fight through the city against the police, fires break out, buildings fall down and then suddenly the space ships emit a loud humming noise and cause a huge earthquake. The ground breaks up and more buildings fall. At this point water starts slowly flooding the city, and at the same time dozens of military helicopters fly into the city and fire at the ships. The larger one realeases a swarm of smaller alien fighter type jets which dog fight with the missile and gun equipped copters, then fighter jets fly in to help fight the battle. You survive below, hopefully aquireing guns and vehicles. ( the game relies on the player being very self sufficiant. In the games reality the player doesnt play any sort of main role until near the end. Until that part you are subject to the world of the game and must survive to fufill your destiny so to speak) The large ship will eventually land and the hundreds of people and police in the city will meet hundreds of aliens in a huge melee and gun combat war. (There will still be extensive dry areas since parts of the city would be above the flood line still)

The story continues and so much more happens, eventually you bring down the large space ship which crashes into the water causing a huge wave to destroy even more of the city. So much water that boats will be availible.

I just need to know how to get this idea, and its true look and workings which really cant come through on an internet message board, to the right kind of people. There is much more here, I guess I should write it all down in a proposal, I wonder if there is a specific format for such things. Probably, anyways hope i can get some help. :)

1) you could call it sky|movies cause it sounds like a day of watching one of those channels to pick up idea's ;)

2) If you were really serious about getting it done, you've just told everyone your idea, now anyone out there can go and do it before you do and then take all the credit for it :(

but good luck though.. if your serious, go into general editing and ask in there, probably the best place to get your questions answered... Or a passing friendly mod might move this thread there for you

Um, it doesnt seem much like a game. Whats the point? What are you supposed to do? Just run around and watch everything happen? Hmmm, you need some direction, need to brainstorm.

Argh, if I were you I'd edit or ask a mod to delete that Insid! Now everyone knows your idea! They could steal / rip it from ya'. :(

If they make the game as I envision it in my head then I benefit cause I just want this game. If they make it not like how i think of it in my head then when and if i make my game it will rule over theirs.

And Terminator, there are plenty of things to do, Im not gonna sit here and drool about some game where you do nothing.

Hehe, 'mkay :). Whatever floats your boat man.

What kinda things you mean, like an mmorpg? Where you pick a class/job and do it?

Er...how does it sound like The Matrix....

The game will unfold in 3 stages, in the first you dont really have much to do except a bunch of little jobs like in GTA3. Basically the first part of the games purpose is to get the player acustomed with the city, its layout and workings. You will want to know where to go, how to get there and what its going to be like to get there. Certain streets get more traffic then others, the mobs of people move through certain areas while leaving others sparse. These are emergent properties and they do weigh in as I have mentioned.

The second part of the game is where the action kicks up. Once the aliens start attacking and the people go nuts you will basically be standing in the middle of a war. I want this massive, massive war to begin and rage all around the player, who should be on their toes at all times. While in the second stage you have no real effect on the war, you still take part in this huge gun/melee battle. Eventually you fight in this battle with cars, boats and helicopters. The city itself transforms dramatically, from being a active and working modern city to being a city in mass panic under attack to a disaster site of broken earth and fallen buildings to a water filled post-apocolyptic maze of canyons and even further. All the time the war between the two sides continues.

Once they attack and mass panic sets in the police will start attacking the people, you will have to fight them, but you will also have to fight the people who really dont give a f*ck about you.

In the third part circumstances cause you to become a very powerful being. I dont want to give too much away about this part of it, but suffice to say you will be able to move and throw many objects (cars, people, buildings, etc) with your mind, be able to fly at will, etc. This will come in handy when fighting a couple of ten story tall creatures who will rip apart the city and hurdle large chunks of building at you.

I guess there are 2 main aspects that I want to fulfill with this game.

First is the visual style. Such as the surrealistic detail in most of the destruction and the epic quality of such a mass of people and aliens. Throughout every stage of the game breathtakingly brilliant visuals should be just under the surface. In the first part of the game it is just the joy of seeing the working and beautiful city, immense in size. (vertically and horizontally). Visual sense will further be brought into play with the News crew, giving replay shots of certain disasters. The second part is almost non-stop eye candy with explosions, war and destruction at every turn. In the third we tone down the chaotic war but kick up the surrealisitic destruction.

Second is the play sense. I love those games where they make you feel like you are a part of a world in itself. Thats why you have the first portion of the game, to have to working world you can toy with and get to be acustomed to before you must survive its utter destruction. Plus I love games when you fight in a large war and again feel like part of something much more then just you. This also allows the player to control the level of action, they can burst out and kill anything that moves, or they can go more stealth and play it safe. Since everyone isnt just after you, you decide the attention you wanna draw to yourself. I guess a main factor to the play sense would be the addition of emergent properties. So that while some events are scripted, much of the daily life and actions of the masses of people can be unscripted emergent properties. Of course they would have to have boundaries to make sure the story remained linear, but it would make it so much of the game feels different on replay (and since this is so massive in scale you could play so many different parts) and take care of trying to have the game control the actions of the hundreds and hundreds of NPCs.

Well I have once again talked too much, perhaps next time I come to write more about the game here Ill just start on an official proposal or something for it. Hmm, how would one go about doing that?

I need a life, a girlfriend, house, and a fast computer. If you can get me all these I will think about making this game for you. :)

Me too, only I would also like some peanut butter. Great game though.

it's a reasonable idea, and the first thing i thought while reading it was the same as a couple of other posters, "it's a good idea but now everyone knows".

also, i think it's a bit too general. try and focus your idea. maybe you've got it all sorted in your design documents and such. from the sound of it, it would do better as a film. as a games player, i hate having to sit through and watch. if i want to sit there and watch stuff happen then i'd go to the tv. i bought a game so i want to be engaged. you may have the best vision in the world, but put yourself in the players shoes. what will they see? how will they feel?

if you want to get your idea up and running and put it in a format publishers want to see, then i suggest you find a copy of "Game Design (Prima Tech's Game Development Series)" by Bob Bates. that book covers pretty much everything a beginner needs and sets you up nicely.

other then that, the only other thing i can suggest is that you keep your ideas to yourself, and only share with someone you trust and someone who can analyse and bounce ideas off. it's a lot more productive then giving a whole community your ideas.

I agree with dedalus, it sounds more like it just unfolding in front of you. You dont really mean anything, and if your just supposed to feel like part of this big city then why do you get to have telepathy and everything. Sounds like you had the right idea with making it into a film. Maybe you could use the half life 2 movie editor thing and make it. Hey! Theres an idea! (Not sarcastic) That would be cool, you should do that.

Sounds cool to me :) - I especially like the idea of getting to know the city before everything starts to happen (it would have to be an interesting place to explore with plenty to do tho ....... kind of a massive shenmue)

Surviving the chaos would be excellent fun (was always what I like most about Half Life) Seeing places you 'know' destroyed, 'friends' you've made in trouble (rescue them if u like, or leave them to perish ahaha). Need a car? do you beat up the old lady to steal her ride? If you do her grandsons hunt you down for the rest of the game :) etc

The flying and moving stuff with your mind sounds very ropey to me tho. I'd prefer just having to survive untill things returned to normal.

Who said things return to normal?

And what dont you like about moving objects? The way it will be pulled off (hopefully) would be very similar to the HL2 weapon, the games POV would be able to be toggled between first and third (this help sometimes for driving, flying or melee combat) and if you went into third you would see your hands moving to pick up objects, in first person all you would see is you putting your crosshair on what you want to move and then dragging that (and then by using alt fire to blast it away) towards your oponent.

Im currently working up some sketches to better convey some of images and settings I want this game to unfold. I am going to include them almost like a graphic novel in my presentation of the idea in PDF form. Ive done graphic design my whole life so I am sure I can pull these off, though doing them all in photoshop is proving quite the challenge. If I finish one of them sometime soon Ill post it to get your idea. It would be during the part with the flooded city, during the large storm, when your driving around in boats with machine guns mounted to them (plus youll be able to fire a weapon with a free hand so shoot those chasing you).

Lastly what I wanted to say was that I have rethought the idea of the game a bit and have decided the change its layout. I feel it would be a diservice to just let this player survive without any help whatsoever. So, instead of having to wonder around aimlessly you'll have a guide in the form of a friend. I havent decided yet whether to make it a human talking to you through a headset or a computer assistant. I guess I will have the player were some sort of HEV type suit, that way I could have a small video display pop up to see the companion talking to you. Plus you could have the news transmission (at some point) uplinked to your hud display. (probably will become availble to the player once most of the city is destroyed and there arent many ambient televisions around. But as far as the guide/companion goes I figure they could give you tips about whats happening and where to go, the wouldnt directly lead you, but they'll point out small things you might miss and lets say if you are in a situation where something bad is about to go down and you have to get out of there, they could tell you the best route of escape. But the last thing I would want is some annoying voice always butting in telling me what to do. That is why there would always be a toggle control. Just about everything should be customizable, I mean in what good reason should you force someone to endure the game with something they dont like and could easily fix if a toggle control was available?

i don't get why the city has to have a law system , a mail system, and all that stuff if it's just a game and everything goes to hell shortly after you start playing.

if there's an all out war, who needs law and mail? what's fun about having a working mail system in the game? NPC mailmen? i don't get it :D

The law system plays an important part in the first half of the war. Besides, the large portion before the war could provide ample replay value.

As far as NPC mailmen, that is going a little far. But you never know, details might want to be implimented. I will probably have this set in the near future so you might have some sort of personal mail device. Snail mail would consist of typing a letter and going to a mail box. The mail box would just take the letter and email it in the game to the person, there wouldnt be a tangible carrier and delivery.

These systems are mainly their for appearances at the beginning, I wont lie to you, there will be no more Taxi cabs or Pizza deliveries after the war gets going. But what will be there througout the entire game is emergent properties, which will in part govern systems like Taxi's and Police and the bus system (yes there will be a schedule too).

The main aspect that these systems will arrise from is the implimintation of emergent properties. So when there are just a few hordes of people left, after the bulk of the disaster has taken place, an emergent property will come about when they band together and claim territory. And emergent property will be ruling when the people will kill you if you get in their way or when they will risk their own life to save yours. Its simply a way to guide individual NPC ai by means of its surrounding counterparts. So while it is influenced by the people around it, it too is influencing said people. And its not just pure contagen, rebellion, dissent, and a torrid of other unexpected actions can arrise, because actions that took place ten or twenty minutes ago will individually spark differences in each unique NPC.

Well back to photoshop for me....

how will the law system play a role in the game before the war? and how is that fun?

He wants to create a persistent world of realtime dynamically reacting npcs and then do crazy shit with them and run about as they go nuts. Anybody here seen '13th Floor'?

How does a law system play a role in the activitives of any city? They will patrol the city, and go to scenes of crimes. If a large protest or demonstration happens they will go to keep the peace or inforce marshal law. If you break a law and run from them, they will chase you, on foot, through buildings, in cars, with helicopters. It becomes fun when you have to evade them. But they will also defend you, so if someone attacks you, they will go after them. The way the police will be in the game will allow the player to use them in certain ways, and while that can backfire, having an army of police on your side can have its rewards.

I honestly dont understand how someone could see the game I have been describing as anything but fun. You get to take place in the biggest war ever put into a video game. Like BF1942, only in a city, in the future, and times 50.

If possible I would make the game with online capabilities, so all those people running around fighting arent all NPC's. Who knows, not like its gonna happen any time soon.

I think it is a really cool idea. It seems like it'd be an interactive movie sorta thing. The beginning would sorta serve as a tutorial, learning the ropes of driving, walking, doing stuff...and then when the sh*t hits the fan, you know what to do. I also like how it's a perspective from a joe-schmo POV. You just start out as some guy, then evolve into a leader (possibly).

I do think it is too big of an idea with current technology for the time being. If you're talking awesome graphics, I doubt you could get a huge city in. Like you said though, it's not gonna happen any time soon.

Another thing that'd be really cool is multiple angles on the whole story. You know how ID4 showed different people's stories when it came to the invasion? It could be something like that. One story you're a schmo like Goldbloom. Maybe next you'll be Will Smith. Or maybe you'll be the President and you have to make strategic decisions.

This is what I'd love single player games to turn into. Engrossing stories, big worlds, different standpoints. It just makes me think about how awesome games will become in 10...maybe 20 years. How much more real will they become? How big will they be able to get? Only time will tell us...

I think home computers will be able to handle the kind of game I am envisioning in 7 - 10 years. So I have ample time to work and refine the idea and make up a great proposal/graphic novel and totally impress people at a time when the idea would be actually fesible. That is if someone else doesnt do it first, and if them do then I press hard to make this as a movie.

Oh man do I wanna direct a movie like this, you know with lots of eye candy. There are a ton of good stories out there that could be made into awesome movies if the right look was applied to them. I would love to see an Akira or Ghost in the Shell live action movie, or a modern day revamping of 1984 but set in say 2084. There are just hundreds of good things just beyond the next bend. I am so excited about where we will go with this kind of technology in ten years. I mean I look back ten years ago, around the time Jurrasic Park came out, it is just incredible how far we have come since then, and to go again for that stretch of time now? By ten years time CG will be 100% photoreal and movies will be made in them with the directors having ultimate control. I double real live actors will ever be replaced, but when that time comes, when CG actors are actually as believable as real actors, the movie industry is going to have another explosion.

Just think, today you and I we play with 3d cameras and environments all the time. You fly around in spectator mode going here, there and everywhere, and this influences your thoughts on presenting the visual material. In ten years time this sort of influence will spread to the very medium that will allow it to be done to live action features. This combined with the competitive nature of these capitalists to wanna outdo the eye candy seen last year, will result in... the shiznit. :)

Thoughts?

ps: I want a holodeck so bad. Holodeck > Matrix

The story is kind of cheesy. Sorry, I'm not a big sci-fi fan and even if I was, this sort of thing has been done to death. Definitely not good for theatres, but it could still make a nice game.

The first thing you need to do, though, is rethink your whole development strategy. Instead of thinking of every little detail that you want in your game, just think of all the things that are absolutely necessary for it to be enjoyable.
