I've never ever been a fan of Microsoft. But I still use its products. Anyway, earlier on today I accidently installed a trojan on my pc. I was doing loads to get it off. In the end, I did get it off but look at this:
I downloaded Ad-Aware SE and scanned my C: drive. I did the same with Windows Defender.
Ad-Aware found 563 threats.
Windows Defender found 1 threat.

Your views?

That depends on which "threats" Ad-Aware found. IIRC, Ad-Aware treats many tracking cookies as "threats", when they're really harmless.

I don't know what to say besides that sucks. But at least you got it off you know? Its weird that you need to run like 4 of those programs just to get all the problems off.

You didn't happen to run the windows defender after you ran adaware did you? That would explain why there weren't many problems haha.

Nope. But would running at the same time cause any difference?

I have that problem with running spybot and avg anti spyware. quite funny sometimes.

Look at it this way: Ad-Aware has been around for years, but Microsoft has only been making anti-spyware/virus programs for maybe 1, 1.5 years. Obviously Ad-Aware is going to be miles ahead of Windows Defender.

Another thing... Microsoft prevents you from visiting their update website if your using another browser like Firefox.

Yeah, you can't count 'threats' alone. If you looked at what they actually were and said Ad-Aware found this threat and this threat that actually are dangerous but MS's Defender did not...that would be something.
Just use NOD32 or Adaware then :P
Woot

I have stopzilla, which i bought. Its amazing, ever since I have gotten it adaware and spybot never find anything but tracking cookies.

ad-aware and The Cleaner are the best programs ive used. all others are crap. including AVG anti-virus. all it does it clutter up in the background and doesn't scan shit.

No they don't and they even made an 'extension' for FF so you'd be able to validate your install like you can in IE.

Like others said, you simply cannot compare the 2 the way you have.

That says more about how rubbish you are than Microsoft :p
Most of them were probably just tracking cookies. But you need to learn more about how to stay safe on the internet, clearly. Apparently a quarter of all computers are now zombies sending spam or participating in DDOS attacks and probably at least three quarters have some form of malware. I have had no spyware/viruses/rootkits/etc for several years. I don't even pay for NOD32 updates any more. Knowing how to avoid that crap in the first place is important. Too bad most people have no idea.

Defender is an old program. Microsoft bought it, they didn't make it.

My err.. future step dad says Microsoft have to be taken to court for not allowing us to visit their update site on Firefox =)

Slap him and tell him to stop spreading ridiculous FUD.

I was recently referred to AVG anti-spy/virus.

So far - brilliant. Not had a problem with anything and it cleans up a lot of shit.

User of AVG here too, been great so far, had it a few months now. Better than Norton bloatware.

Yeah, right, you probably scanned and FIXED found threats with AdAware and then used Windows Defender :P

the free version isn't bad and there are a lot of good free apps, like avast!

2007 AV reviews
Under AVG Anti-Virus review
"Summary:
The biggest downside to AVG Anti-Virus is it didn't pass the West Coast Lab's level 2 test. For the price, you can find better antivirus software."

Avast! didn't make it to their top 10 so they dont have a full or mini review for it. But they do have ratings and they did not give it full bars on effectiveness which even AVG got.
Of course it's free so I guess it can't be up to the same lvl as the other stuff. :O

A lot of people on this board seem to like Kaspersky and Nod32.

Mine was free xD It came off my future step dad's memory stick :O

I'm a NOD32 boy, but I'm using Kaspersky right now and it does the job pretty damn good.

W00t

I have serious problems with my AntiVirus :/ So any advice is welcome

Nod32 and Kaspersky own your mother ****ing cat.

I use spybot, and I ran a full defender scan for the first time, and it found things spybot didn't.

I runned them both at the same time.

That's the thing though.

When a program catches threats, it more than likely puts them into a quarantine "safe" zone where they can't do any harm.

AdAware probably found the threats before Defender did and put them into the quarantine, and obviously the threat wasn't there but Defender did find one thing that it got to before AdAware.

If you would have run Defender first, then AdAware and posted the results, then I would be much more interested in this, but the fact is is that you can't judge Defender because you were running two programs at the same time...

For me, I run AVG :) Loved it ever since I got it years ago.

About the update sites, those are no more in Windows Vista. You simply have one update client. There is also a windows update client in Win XP SP2 that you can set to auto-download and install updates (or simply download and you decide which ones to install)... If your future step-dad is saying "MS is going to court over this!" then tell him to learn more about Windows and stop spreading the MS hate.

I know what you mean. But it always ask me if I want them to go into quarantine after the scan has finished.

It's probably really asking you if you want to put them in permanent quarantine, so as not to confuse dumbass middle-aged PC owners :P

Probably two of the best applications to prevent you from getting adware if used together I believe:

Ad Muncher

ProtoWall

Ad Muncher will remove ad's from websites, even advertisement links and those popup's that cover text. It is defiantly the best ad removing software I have used. It does not remove spyware/adware from your hard drive, just from the websites you visit.

Protowall is a IP blocking program like peerguardian, It was designed to keep people more 'anonymous' wile file shearing but can be used block known IP's for ad sites.

I hate having anti-virus things running in the background, uses too much of my computer's resources lol. Need power.

I seem to be able to get on to their site with a Vanilla Firefox, I think...

*goes to check*

EDIT: Wow, those bastards. They don't let you view their Update site without IE. Rubbish.

maybe because it uses some active x controls on that site that no other can run (afaik). thought about that? anyway, who's using their update site when there's autoupdate.
