Bit of a late entry in this thread:
I don't use it so I'm not sure, but isn't Windows Defender what Microsoft Antispyware (formerly Giant AntiSpyware) turned into? If so it is an excellent program, and WAY better than Adaware ever was. Of course, the amount of support that Microsoft provides for it in the form of frequent security updates could have an effect on how good it is. I had Adaware for a long time, and I've really been through the mill for trojans/mallware - Adaware never helped at all.
AVG is another dud. Every time I got infected, by the time AVG noticed anything on my comp I knew I was screwed and that I'd need a program other than AVG to do the clean-up, because AVG could never manage it (and rarely spotted everything that was on there). The pay version is little better.
If people want good AV, do yourself a favour and shell out some money (or don your eyepatch and wooden leg) for NOD32 or Kaspersky.
Even better: familiarise yourself with everything that runs in taskmanager (and download a BETTER task monitor program), download Hijackthis, get an Unlocker program to unlock files that are in use, and get comfortable with how to use a combination of these programs and Safe Mode. By using utilities like these and by paying attention to any shite that gets dumped in your System32 folder suddenly, you can defeat most trojans manually. Always good to have a reliable backup like Kaspersky though.
