Fat_Bob: We wouldn't be swimming in gold. Didn't you read my last post? If everyone had everything, we could start looking to more important things in life. Crime would go almost completely away (except for those few insane people, ofcourse), because no one would want to steal something they can get anyway.

A short brief in Communism, by CrazyHarij:

The basic idea about communism is that everyone is supposed to share on everything and no one should have anything more than anyone else, which means everyone should have same kind of car, same computer, same kind of house, everyone gets payed salary in an equal amount, it doesn't matter if you're a hobo or a brain surgeon.
This results in:

Everyone that has passed exam and got enough grades for a decent job flees the country, the only guys left is the government and the poor people everywhere, the whole country goes bankrupt and it results in a massive famine which kills half of the population.

This is what happened with the communism in the Soviet Union. That's why it doesn't work, the human race isn't compatible with it.

This is very true, while communism may be a wonderful magical idea on paper but when it comes to reality the truth is that people don't want to work any more than what they have to.

What would happen if you wanted to be lets say an austronaut when you grow up? (it's just an example). Even if you met all the requirements and proved willing to study it in college, do you really think you will be allowed to do it? In communism the government assigns you a place of work and a job, it doesn't matter what you want, what matters is what the people need. If you still haven't seen whats wrong with it from that, here's another reason.

Would you agree to be a doctor, go through 6 - 7 years of college and a lot of learning and effort so you can be paid exactly the same as the garbage man? How about the guy who works at Wendy's ?(which wouldn't exist by the way because independent business does not boom in comunist society).

Sure, comunism sounds awesome in the grander view of things but what makes people human is the fact that we all have different wants and needs and a will of our own. If we have some high and mighty government telling us what to do we would be no different from machines having a person input commands into them. Comunism without government? This existed a long time ago, it's called anarchy, the system the cavemen and barbarians had where the biggest and most violent people survived and nobody had equal possessions because the bigger people stole from the smaller people.

I am not an american, i have seen a "preview" of comunism in my home country (i moved because of this) and let me tell you it is not for the best. There will never be equality for all unless you somehow alter the way humans behave and think, and by doing that you are taking away one of the best things in humanity.

Free will.

Communism isn't all good, I'm just saying, there's some concepts in there worth considering. The world should be run by the people, the economy should be run by the people, and the people should benefit from the economy.

Ok, I snipped before your statement about government being a handicap so I don't have to comment on the practical aspects of that :)

Yes, communism doesn't work unless everyone is in on it, and even then it's prone to massive corruption. (Broad sweeping statement, probably won't have too many arguments against it though, since many people here seem to suffer from phobia of being called pinkos)

Many people fail to discriminate between the idea of incorporating socialist aspects into a market economy, and communism.

I don't believe many e.g. Americans would like to live in a country which completely ignored the welfare of the under-privileged, yet a true market/"invisible hand" (ref: Adam Smith) economy would have no public service, except for basic administrative and policing functions.

The introduction of these ideas inte the US economy is largely attributed to FDR, in the immediate post WWII era, I believe. Now, I dare you to call FDR a commie :)

The US economy then stagnated (right wing people will say because of this). Of course, they forget to mention that the world economy as a whole stagnated because much of the rebuilding etc that had to be done after the end of the war was finished.

Basically, as far as I know, FDR's ideals stayed with the public until Reagan, who basically tore down everything in an attempt to reduce government spending, i.e. move closer to a true market economy. Did it work? You decide...
