Just to be clear, the cache is 500MB compressed on the wire, which is the number we track closest as it's the amount of data that will be moved across your internet connection.

Uncompressed, the files in this preload are around 1GB. For Half-Life 2 to run, they have to be in this state. The first preload event contains most of the textures that Half-Life 2 needs to run.

This is the first of a number of preload events. We'll be adding more data to the preload over the next couple of weeks.

Well I figure that once some of these additional preloads are done, that pretty much means the game is gold.

Gah, I was hoping he'd say over the next week, not weeks. Boo, now it means the release will probably be in late September. Let us hope.

i used to be a doubter, but now that valve has preloaded and they said they are going to preload some more, its pretty certain its going to happen, because, well ,we know its possible now that theyve done it once.

its good they didn't give an exact day though, gives them some headroom on the updates.

So we only downloaded 500MB? And it's already extracted? Or what?

Well why would they lie about something like this?

its not about lieing...its mostly about mis-calculating how much time they need and end up missing dates they themselves set.

at least i don't think they lie.. they are just horrible at calculating the time needed.. and right now im sure 100 rabid HL2 fanboys can stand up and say they can calculate the time needed for things better than Valve has

anyway.. i said in that thread with a poll on when we can expect to see HL2 that it is probably closer to the first week of October...hmm.. perhaps even the second week of October.

It's always safer to assume they don't know anymore than us, because they are most likely just guessing.

shhh , im trying to loosen people up round here by getting the hype machine churning rapidly again ;)

More hype = more broken hearts when the delay comes. :P

why not give valve a chance, and forget any delay ever happened :P, or are we all destined to continue to be so bitter and paranoid :imu:

Any date that Gabe himself does not utter is absolute foolishness.

ok :farmer: , lets be foolish, and have a jolly good final guess. :D

So they hit september 30th... then they can say that they never lied right?

Valve had their chance. :P

Nah, I'm still optimistic. The preload has only hightened this feeling.

right then seems resonable,, forget all this logical skeptical BS, its tiring, i want to have fun waiting for this awsome game,, i dont care if they miss sept 30th by a day, lets have the end of the month to look forward too, atleast. (noobs excused :E )

wow man thats an unbelievable photoshop job, you should work for valve ;)

Ewww next few weeks!! BOO!!

I'll guess there'll be about 2 more ~1gb preload additions over the next month. Probably still a while off a release date yet. A September release would be cutting it extremely finely with this recent info.

Christ almighty, will the waiting ever finish? :)

no! just a couple weeks he says. 2. but then again im being optimistic.

still though, the ball is actually rolling now with the preload, which is a good sign for the future.

I got the preload popup when i started up my Steam today, but i got the "server too busy" message, so i gave up.

I wonder how the hell i can choose to download the HL2 preload again via steam. No help files anwhere, checking the Steam forums...nothing...

Appearantly, you only get one shot at downloading the cache files...either that or i'm being a dummy...

...waits patiently for next posts describing how much of a dummy i am.

Well back to these posts that this person has posted. Im still suspicious if its someone tryign to be funny. If you look at his post counts it only syas 4. The other time someone posted somethign from that forum Erik only had a post count of 1. So it makes me wonder if hes an official valve person. And if anythign we should be getting stuff from say Gabe or Doug(unreliable as he may be).

Line Bender, go to the Play Games menu, double-click on the Half-Life 2 entry.

Why be negative guys? Let's help the mods out a bit by being kind and loving and gentle on the forums. We are all learning.

EDIT: 100th Post!

GOLD GOLD GOLD!

Next couple of weeks might just mean 2 weeks considering they go gold on monday!

yeah, my guess is the 14th of sept

Remember, Valve wants a simultaneous worldwide release. That's a lot more copies at once than a normal "Americans first, then everyone else gradually" release. It might take a little bit longer to produce that many CDs.
