Those ads come up because all the respectable ones like Orange (mobile phones), O2 (mobile phones) and other big name companies all use Flash for their ads. However, along side that are those ****s that also put sounds in their ads.

We can do one of two things.

1) Have flash ads enabled and put up with the sounds that a small portion of them make.

2) Have no flash ads and get ads of cows bonking each other and women that you can apparently meet by joining a website. If she's waiting for me so much then why doesn't the bitch ever e-mail me? They lie... ;(

Do not forget there is a useful extension called Adblock. Since we can block those advertisements, we can take both advantages: the site is getting money earning from those advertising companies. The users, like us, keep on surfing the Halflife2.net as usual, without getting annoyed. Easy money, isn't it!

Thanks to firefox, no matter the advertisements are sticking all over the site. I essentially won't get affected! Net receipt, zero expenditure, how wise our mighty administrators are!

But surely HL2.net could get a deal with something games relevant. All porno ads do is cheapen the site and perpetuate the myth that gamers are all chickless, jobless morons who will put up with crap being shoved in their face at the same time they derive their enjoyment from all things gaming and work off that noobish tan. It's like sports fans ignoring the fact they're being peed on in their seats while they watch this week's big game.

I dunno. There are lots of alternatives to those porn-promising promoters. PC hardware online retailers? Online discount game retailers? Maybe come up with a shortlist of people to contact for ads and put up a forum poll so the community decides which one's worthy of advertising, so it seems less the site's allowing a monopoly since it would be more or less democratic.

I'm not complaining, I'm advising. If the ads really start to get to me I'll just stop coming to HL2.net, especially if other competitors can offer a comparitive service and quality without that type of ads.

But, tbh, this isn't a tiny little fansite that you could make excuses like that for, it's a huge community that gets lots of traffic. In my way of thinking that means this site merits a more professional attitude. The whole 'be grateful' thing doesn't cut it. And like Ennui said, with the right deals you could probably actually make profits from the banners while still providing relevant, gamer-specific advertising. (Not lazy pseudo-age-specific advertising.)
