I made it to the bottom of the elevator shaft but cannot seem to activate the elevator. Anyone know how?

If you mean after you've shaken off the Antlion Queen, then look right behind you and there should be a car wreck there. Take the gear from it, then shove it inbetween the lever that's part of the lift and the rest of the mechanism. It should work then.

If i remember correctly, then you have to look to the lift mechanism to see whats missing when you pull the lever..

Get your brain in gear

The funny thing is, I took the gear from the wreck, then when I went to put it into place, a Barnacle I didn't spot took it from me. When I shot it, the gear fell and landed exactly where I wanted it to!
