g'day

had an interest in art all my life (i am 16) but never really had many lessons im doing my preliminary hsc course at high school this year and here is some of my work

this is a work in progress that i had to send off for marking as i ran out of time to complete it

these are a few other experiments i have done in paint

im not very good with paint as i havnt had the opurtunity to use it much i like to use pencil and have done quite a bit of work with it

here is one i did 2003/2004 i entered this into the royal australian muster or easter show art competition wanted to do something a bit morbid and contraversial to do with the "war on terror"

so tell me what you think critiscism is welcome good or bad

i will upload more later

sorry bout the photo quality... i did this in 2001

another bad photo but this was a maths project that i went a bit over board with, done in 2000... we had to enlarge a smal picture through the use of a grid... its adam jones from TOOL... tool are a band that i draw inspiration from

Some of these are really great and show alot of understanding. What is your favourite medium?, cos there are a few sorts used here.

thanks bugs i enjoy using pencil but want to get into paint i wanna use colour and i cant get that with pencil i those experiments were to a part of an abstract expressionism study at the moment i am working on a still life piece in paint that i will show u guys later and btw not a fan of computer art either no offence to any of you blokes who are into it just prefer to work with raw medium as i have more control over wat im doing and its less tedious i believe but please dont say it takes more skill to create computer art

ha! brilliant we think alike, I inadvertantly upset a few people by voicing my dislike with computer art. I believe in sticking to a brush. Can't wait to see some of your still life paintings. Come have a look at some of my stuff if you want.

Tool is a great band to draw inspiration from. I love the very first picture.

Excellent work.

just thought i'd add another shot of the first one to show it off a bit better

and thanks for the comments lol bugs i had a read of the post of yours, had a look at some of your work how long did the first drawing take you to do the structure and detail of it is pretty amazing my only criticism is that you need to create more depth through tone and shadow but im no pro far from it anyways mate keep up the good work. btw also had a look at your attempts with oil paint, how is it i've never used it before but i hav been wanting to try it out ... and i like your attitude bout the computer art dont get me wrong there are many talented computer artists out there but it does not compare to raw art. Btw i'm an aussie noticed you are from New Zealand just thought i'd mention that. Anyways thanks ennui and yes tool are an amazing band but are just one of the many bands i draw inspiration from, others i listen to are apc, the cure, radiohead, massive attack, portishead, nin, bjork, mars volta, jeff buckley, incubus and others

here is a painting i did in 2000 when i was eleven

sorry bout the photo couldnt get rid of the glare... this was one was done when i was 10 years old

this is a rough drawing of my sister i did its not very good and took about 40 mins all up

So much varied talent at Halflife2.net. :O
Only thing I'll say is space out your writing when theres lots of it. No-one likes to read blocks of text. (I say that, theres probably some people who do.)
Be great to see some more coloured art from you. :)

thanks for the tip simonomis i'll try to space it out for you.
but yer i got some coloured stuff coming soon ... and i got no idea how to colour in photo shop or anything like that. Actually heres an experiment i did in building up paint with a gresso medium which you probably can't see

i inverted the colours in paint and i think i like this one better

heres a work in progress of an abstract expressionist piece i am doing

it is about a bad mood

Awesome. The surreal thing (first drawing you posted) is my favorite. It's awesome.

The first one is the best, I love the shading :)

thanks for the comments guys and girls!

The surreal one with the tree took some time and looks allot better than it does in the photo. It was probably the first artwork i've done with a range of different graded pencils (2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B etc) so that really aided the toneing and shadowing effects. I also discovered the tortillon, for those of you that don't know what one is it is a tightly wound stick of paper that can be sharpened and blunted to blend the lead on the page giving the texture a smoother even finish.

Any tips on what i'm doing wrong???

Taking the day off school today i have to learn a song for a performance tomorrow i and doing some stuff in my VAPD (Visual Arts Process Diary) at the moment i'm doing a study on Alex Grey, have you guys heard of him he's an amazing artist. I was introduced to his work when i bought the Tool album Lateralus, he did the album art on it. So i went to his site a couple of months back and must say his work is absolutely amazing. If you want to be inspired you must see this:

http://www.alexgrey.com/

Anyways for my HSC major works i am going to try to achieve something like the works of alex grey.

hey again just uploaded all my stuff to deviantART.com which you can check out here its got pretty much the same stuff that is on here but there is a few new additions and its a bit more organised.
here's the link http://danielsmall.deviantart.com/

That guys really good. Very psychodelic :P. I like the "Painting" painting.

It doesn't inspire me though, it makes me feel inferiour :P

so does no one like the rest of my stuff or is the first drawing just better than the rest of it? Sorry just wondering

experimenting with photography

any good???

and can anyone suggest what program to use to edit photos

I suggest trying out GIMP with the GIMPShop hack.

http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241

It's menus and text are rearranged to resemble Photoshop. While not close to the actual Photoshop, it is free. I never got the hang of using though.

You can also try the cheaper version of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements. Or, if you have enough money, the full version of Photoshop.

If you want to paint, try out Corel Painter. You'll probably want a tablet too.

:D
