Obviously, we know now the game is still on track and that the release will indeed be early next year. A major development did however occur - around a year ago THQ brought in freelance developer Dean Sharpe to transform the game from an undefined mess of potential to a sprawling masterpiece.

...

One thing we noticed during a area change was a loading screen. Sharpe said that not only do these loading screens appear between areas, but also as you walk about the world. So the game unfortunately doesn't feature a seamless world as we once believed.

...

What was most surprising however was Sharpe revealing that 'I may or may not take out the vehicles - I haven't decided yet'. Vehicles were a big part of the game's original feature-set. If they were to be removed it would pose more than a few design problems, considering the size of the 30-square kilometre area covered in the game.

it may be too little too late ..especially since the people who really looked forward to this game are going to complain the loudest about all the features they cut from the game ..the biggest being loading screens between areas

What HAVEN'T they taken out of the ****ing game?

Bah... officially, the only thing it may still have going for it is the AI.

Sooo... if the AI fails, the game fails.

Imo of course.

Team Fortress 2

I can't wait till I see Duke Nukem in its all 3D glory. Its going to a revolutionary step forward! I can't wait!!

I don't understand why TF2 is on that list. Valve aren't going about every month or so releasing doubful info about the game. It's being developed quietly and that's all.

Who the hell is Dean Sharpe and what the hell does he know about game development? "I may or may not take out the vehicles - I haven't decided yet"- lol, so he's considering making us walk across the whole goddamn 30 kilometer zone. Great idea there, buddy. No to mention the 50 loading screens we're likely to encounter on our trek. Oh, I know what he'll do! He'll reduce the zone to the size of de_dust so we won't need vehicles. Genius! And of course, the game probably won't be open ended anymore, it will be like GTA where you can roam freely but follow a set of missions with no choices whatsoever. GG, Sharpe.

Don't mess with Dean Sharpe. He's been involved with games like The Simpsons Wrestling, Herc's Adventures and Metal Warriors.

Anyway. Stalker will be a pretty lame game when it's released. The team that were making it clearly had no clue what they were doing whatsoever.

Nothing apparently, coz he is an interior designer.

My experience includes large residential projects, multiple apartment fit-outs, Exotic lodges, and luxury super yachts. My approach is always the same.

He seems a bit out of place in Chernobyl somehow .... And always the same approach. That seems pretty dull to me.

Yeah very quietly for about 8 years now.

sounds like he's trying to dumb it down and make it like every other fps.

screw sharpe & thq, these guys should just live on bread till they've finished the game and aren't restricted.. well, that might mean they'll work on it for years, so we'll set a date when we'll murder their children if it's not released, they miss the next date, it's their wife and grandmother.

I still want to play the finished product even just to see how it turned out after its long and troubled lifespan.

Someone hasn't had their morning coffee.

or maybe you have...? in which case, cut down. :x

Looks to me like Sharpe is saving this project from being cancelled or ending up another buggy, hyped-beyond-hyped, unfocused piece of crap. I'd be grateful if I were you. :p

dam dont tell me is not going to be the original game it was suposed to be?

yes thank you ...I dont know where some of you were getting these wild ideas from ...it's as KagePrototype said; he's there to fix their mess

That's wishful thinking. It won't be anywhere near that good.

I predict a slightly improved version of Boiling Point.

You raped my game you bastards!

Doesnt sound that bad. Just read the article and the only thing im upset about is this:

"'There isn't that much that's been cut … I've made some minor changes. There were some types of mutants that I pulled out. I took out sleeping and eating - a couple of the minor RPG elements. I also shortened the amount of dialog in the dialog trees - there [was a lot] of back and forth that wasn't needed.'"

Everything else seems on track.

Back and forth conversation is what makes things interesting... If everything that was said in the world was always direct and to the point... it'd be a very boring world. There'd be no digression, no fun but ultimately pointless conversations... none of that.

I'd kill myself in that world!

I think taking out eating and sleeping is two pretty MAJOR things in a game that has been touted as a SURVIVAL SIM FPS.:p
I read this several weeks back, it's too bad, but I'll pass off final judgement until the game is out.:)

STALKER would have never been released if it weren't for Dean Sharpe. FFS, this game was supposed to come out before HL2.

I was annoyed when they took out petrol from this game! Now they 're thinking of taking out the vehicles as well!?

*superpissedemoticon*

What they really need to do is redesign the mutants. They just don't make any sense and they look ridiculous.

it hasn't been released ?

the english nazi inside me hates. :p

I REALLY hope he knows what he's doing.

But, ffs, please leave the vehicles alone.

Honestly, they should just scrap the game.

[wishful thinking]Or when it's released, re-add everything they took out in a patch! :D[/wishful thinking]

One part of me says that they should let the game die, because when it finally comes out it'll be nothing like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was originally supposed to be. (Put in loading screens, remove eating and sleeping, remove fuel and so on..)

Another part of me is interested in seeing how much they can salvage, and if they can make a good game despite the changes and the turbulent develoment.

No food, no sleep, less convo, no vehicles, less mutants, load zones... sigh, just let this game die now!

Even if it does come out now, I don't think I want it in that state.

If the lag is present in the final build, I'm just hoping it takes advantage of DX10

Yeah, its too bad they couldn't have planned this out well from the beginning. A good game design might have saved them from this mess. Whoever is the project lead should be flogged and never hired again.

As we made our way through this new area - a sewer system of sorts - a Geiger counter made itself very apparent; it's clicking and beeping warning of impending radiation. As you might expect, if you're dumb enough to ignore the warnings, you will get radiation sickness. While iodine and Prussian blue don't make an appearance, you can drink vodka to cure yourself. 'The scary part is - not just the guys at GSC [but] people in Ukraine believe that,' said Sharpe.
That bit made me laugh, so now we play booze-guzzling gun-toting tresspassing mercenaries?

*stalker walks up to mutant*
"Aalright pal, yoos got a drink av ya?"
*stalker hugs mutant*
"Yoor mah besht *hic* mate yoo are! I luv you ! Nah.... nah.... nah.... seriously. ......"
*mutant looks around nervously*
*thinks* "Oh bugger, why do they always pick me? I wonder if I give him some ammo, will he piss off?"
etc........

I dont know about this whole external producer thing though, especially if this is the same guy(not an impressive resume').
Bear in mind that this is a producer imposed on the development team by the publisher, not brought in at the creative teams request(still could be a good thing I suppose).

rofl SAJ and A.I. -- comedy gold.

i think you people are overplaying it a bit, it doesn't sound like a hell of a lot has been cut, just wait for a demo.. in fact, what happened to the playable sp demo @ e3, how was that ?

i'd kill for a [recent] gameplay video. :(

It looks like you are all pissed off at the bumpy lifespan of this game and need someone to vent your anger off at. You all kind of make this guy appear as the anti-Christ whose only goal is to ruin stalker. But the reality is the STALKER team has had PLENTY of time and support from THQ but due to a design that was just far too ambitious it turned into a big mess. They wanted to accomplish too much and now the project as turned into a big financial disaster for both GSC and THQ so (since it's THQ's money they are spending) THQ sent this guy to salvage what he could and ship out a playable game ASAP to make some kind of profit. I would do the same if I saw a dev team take 7 years what the Oblivion team did in 3.

Give up, release the source, let the rest of the world have a go!

However, it is worth bearing in mind that theres a much larger scope between Oblivion and STALKER. (Not to mention Stalkers using its own engine. Something Oblivion isn't)

For one, creating a world is easy. Making something very accurate from the real world? Much much harder.

That said, the game could be absolute poop and I'd still play it. Just to walk around a realistic Chernobyl and soak it the atmosphere.
