Time magazine's top 10 list of games for 2009

I don't necessarily agree with the order, but all those games definitely deserve to be up there :)

Take Halo: ODST and Modern Warfare 2 off there and it should be fine. Gonna need two more games to fill the void though.

TIME about CoD MW:2

This is a game that sends a message: Video games have something intelligent to say about contemporary military conflicts. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you hop around the globe, chasing the front lines of globalized, asymmetrical combat, where not everybody wears uniforms, war isn't always declared, and the battlefield isn't clearly marked — battles rage through suburbs, airports and people's living rooms. There's tons of raw, riveting military action in Modern Warfare 2, but it's very much about how the game has changed: limiting civilian casualties and figuring out whom to fight and why are just as important as staying alive.

What a bunch of crap, esp. the first two sentences.

This is the link to the original article btw.

I don't really think that paragraph when playing it, but it was a great single player experience, the ending was superb.

But come on: "This is a game that sends a message: Video games have something intelligent to say about contemporary military conflicts." It is like saying that James Bond movies have something intelligent to say about the contemporary world of espionage.

You guys do realise that Modern Warfare 2 is going to take all the other GOTY awards too, with similar praise for its 'thought provoking' single-player game?

Yeah it was hardly thought provoking, it was just fun.

Uncharted 2 is irritatingly low. In fact, if you reverse the order and knock ODST off it's pretty perfect.

Are you bearing in mind that neither 'fun', 'exciting', or 'intense' are synonyms for great?

I think the only games on there worthy of tremendous praise are Uncharted 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Assassin's Creed 2 (though I haven't actually played it, but I'd say the praise and footage indicate that it is). The quality of the other games on the list doesn't really indicate a bad list so much as a mediocre year.

Borderlands and Scribblenauts were good, but not that good. GeoDefense Swarm and DJ Hero definitely don't deserve to be on that list.

Well being thats its a first person shooter, a Call of Duty shooter at that, if its achieving a sense of fun and excitement, and providing a tense gaming experience, then I would say it is very successful yeh.

And why would you put Assassin's Creed 2 on the list having not played it? AC1 was also highly (over)rated and looked great, but the game itself was ****ing pants.

Every year same ****ing shit.

Oh dear, I don't own nor plan on purchasing any of those.

Games lists that don't have A Boy and His Blob on their top 10 this year are automatically forfeit.

Assassin's Creed is the only thing on there that could -possibly- be deserving of any praise. I don't know for sure as they saw fit to not release a god damn PC version.

This has been a pretty shitty year... Dragon Age is easily the best and even it wasn't stellar. I'll throw an honorable mention to that Star Ocean game that came out for the 360 as well... had some fun with that.

STOP POSTING THIS SHIT.

You promote stupid lists like this, and more stupid lists will keep coming sparking up more stupid arguments over stupid shit for no ****ing stupid reason stupid **** shit god damnit

Can't really say I agree with the list myself either, but that's the wonderful thing about opinions: Everybody has them.

Borderlands was alright but not groundbreaking territory, Assassins Creed 2 (So far) has been pretty rad, though.

2009 was a shitty game year and this list is ever shittier. :|
2010 is going to be awesome though: Just Cause 2, Mafia 2, Max Payne 3, HL2 Episode 3(I think)

Accomplishing the goal you set out to when making your game does not make it great. Unless, well, greatness is your goal. And any one who played the original Call of Duty will tell you the franchise is definitely capable of more than mediocrity, and I don't know how you can make the implication that FPS have to be shallow on a Half-Life 2 forum.

If I recall, AC got super hyped and then terrible reviews. Then I ended up playing it and loving it. Immersion and atmosphere, hooray.

Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and 2010 don't even belong in the same sentence.

And no I didn't imply FPSs have to be shallow, I was just saying that Call of Duty is really just about being a tense, war simulator, trying to replicate proper battles as closely as possible, I felt MW2 accomplished that. And AC had the immersion and atmosphere, but it was so horribly tedious and easy I just couldn't be bothered even trying.

Well, I didnt expect much more from such a mainstream list. Go figure that it sucks balls with a few notable exceptions.

Everything in that Top 10 looks like it was written by somebody who doesn't play games or is only glancingly familiar the titles picked.

Nobody should be surprised by this, coming from Time.

As I said, succeeding in a shallow goal is not greatness. And I never really played the story of AC, I just turn it on periodically and run around and climb and assasinate randomly from time to time for the sheer fantastic experience of it.
