Ok, so this is a thread about the release times of all orange box release dates.

Retail: North America - 9th October
Retail: Rest of the world - 12th October
Preload: Everywhere - ???

and post any new info about the preload here. I MUST KNOW!!!!!

oh yeh, and was anyone watchin last week's gamer.tv on bravo and saw the new hl2 ep2 review...
cos i'm gettin slightly concerned about the weapon switch icons. Usually they are stretched across the top of the screen but gamer.tv's footage showed a different layout. I need help..was it just a beta or was it on an xbox or ps3 or something!!!!

Was the Layout like a Cross?

If so, it was the 360 and Ps3 version, the Original X-Box release of HL2 had the same style.

@soulslicer

Only the 360 and Ps3 Versions will have HL2 with Phong and HDR.

Hopefully at one point Valve will release a Optional update (Like the High-Def HL1 pack for Steam) with HDR and Phong for HL2.

HL2 already has HDR -- didn't some engine upgrades add that, or was that only in Lost Coast?

Precisely. Now there's two ways Valve fixed HDR for the PS3 and Xbox versions of HL2 - they either redid the maps to support it or they recoded the engine to turn all normal lights to HDR lights.

i still think its an extremely bad idea bringing the hl2 series to consoles. its should always remain on the comp

well, if valve does not bring its games into the console, it will go bankrupt..

valve has two choices:

1: ADVERTISE = fail!
2: XBOX360 and PS3 = currently attempting and will win..

Seeing as Valve have over 15 million sales (Not including Steam sales) under their belt and with them getting, I think it was 50%, of the proceeds from Steam sales of third-party games and advertising in Counter-Strike and the fact that Gabe Newell is extremely rich anyway, I don't think Valve is going to go bankrupt any time soon.

Heh, atleast it's roots will always be in the PC. Unless Valve does what that one company did for COD3...

i think ur right but roots isnt really good enough it should JUST be PC, after all PCs are the best thing for first person shooters :D

I'm buying it for the 360. Why should it be just for PC? Why shouldn't console users be allowed to play it?

Well said. If 360 and PS3 can support phong and HDR, then that's better than the majority of PCs ATM. Even though you can't upgrade that does mean that you never have to buy new hardware just to play a game that all other console users are playing. Sure, gamer PCs are probably well ahead of most consoles, but with consoles you hardly ever have to worry about random crashes or viruses, or any of the other common problems that Windows is notorious for. After all, consoles are basically built solely to play games, and from what I've heard, the controls on the 360 version are surprisingly comfortable.

Besides, opening up the market like this will bring Valve extra cash, seeing as consoles have so many users. Nicky, you talk like consoles don't even deserve to play HL2, because PCs got there first. Which is a stupid reason.

It just does'nt feel like consoles should be allowed TF2 etc because there will be less players on the computer multi and on Live and PS Network unlike previous games like CSS which are hugely succesful just on the computer, so player numbers will be less. You for example, Samon, are getting OB for xbox which means you wont be on the computer one as well = less players = less fun for all

P.S.just bringin this thread back up to date for a place to post the pre-load date when it is announced instead of creating a completely new and pointless thread

Gabe is really pro PC, so we don't have to worry about that. He put it nicely in an interview once:

"Since nobody owns the platform and Microsoft has decided to put all its focus on the Xbox 360, there?s really nobody who?s making the case for the PC. Certainly we think the PC is super-viable as a development platform. We make a huge amount of money there and expect to for the foreseeable future."

I don't own a console (yet) but I do say if there is a market for it why not go for it? (Just don't make the PC version feel like a console is all I ask!)

Exactly. Just because some people are too arrogent to a "PC" game to console doesn't mean valve shouldn't. Their just getting more money, and thats all they want.

What? You're shooting blanks here. Let me sum up what you said right there.

People with consoles whom obviously can't afford the higher end computers to play this epic game should miss out, because PC got here first, and a small fraction of the PC gamers on line will go with them, so Valve shouldn't ship to them, because I'm a selfish asshat.

Yep. :|

How can you honestly say that bringing the consoles into the equation will make it less fun for everybody? You're obviously just arguing for the hell of it, because your points make no sense. You know as well as I do, and as well as the next person, that the consoles will effect the Valve gaming community in a NEGATIVE way very little to very none, In fact, I think it will have a boost effect on how good the games are, and how quickly they will be shipped. You see, if Valve gets all this new money from the console community then they will have more money to hire Programmers, and storywriters. It's only going to have a positive effect on all of us. So stop wasting space on the forum with your dull, half witted points. Plskthxbai.

Yeah, i even think that Steam could sustain itself if they decided to stop developing games, although lets hope that never becomes an issue :p

during this argueing, i came up with a plan, is there no possible way why valve couldnt develop some system that allows PC players to VS. Xbox Live and Playstation Network on TF2 for example, then I'm all for the console idea

It'd be up to Microsoft. Games played over XBox Live will soon be compatible with Live for Windows. I believe the first game that will test that is going to be Halo 3... I may be wrong.
But we'd have a problem with TF2 through that system as it uses Steam for PC servers.

I know what your saying about having Microsoft and Sony working together....

be good though wouldnt it :D

And since we're on about Pre-load does the 'Pre' stand for anything like, Pre-order or something or is it just 'Beforeonsale-load' which doesnt have the same ring to it

I never said Sony and Microsoft work together...

And pre-load is a term meaning to load a program/files/data onto a system before it is needed so that it can be used quickly the moment it is needed.

So will we still be able to play Ep2 etc later this week or so its downloaded for a later date?

As far as console's are concerned, every time I go to EB games there's like 88% more console game's than just a little shelf for the PC games.... ugh. :|

You can certainly make the argument that some people are going to play orange box because they don't have the money to shell out to buy a expensive computer. But for me I find it very difficult to play any FPS on the console, it's a ****ing bitch to play it. The controls are too horizontal + vertical for my tastes, rather than a smoothe mouse. If there was a mouse and keyboard for the console, I'd jump right on it.

...That didnt answer my question ;(

Yeah, but I'm saying LET IT BE for that purpose. Not everybody can afford it. And I used to BE not everybody. I'm not arguing that the controls are better, quite the contrary. I like the mouse and keyboard better, it's just that, for certain people, it's all they have, and they deserve to play the game as much as you and I. Thats all I was saying.

And nicky, I'm not sure I understand your question... :|

Otherwise I'd answer you. :p

All the files for the 3 games will be on your computer when pre-loaded fully (for Episode 1 it happened in 3 waves over 3 weeks). However these files are encrypted meaning they cannot be opened. The files are un-encrypted on the day by a very small download on the day. This means no downloading of content on the day meaning no 5 hour waits or whatever.

son of a box, for north america, is it technically the 9th or 10th?!?!?

So it just means I have the files stored and they are just about ready for immediate play on October 10th, NICE

Guys, for Steam, it gets unlocked at 12:01 October 9, well, October 10 technically cause it's after midnight. Since it's 12:01 Valve Time, it might be a different time for you.

Here in Alberta it's 1:01 in the morning. :D

3 in the morning here for Ontario.

Well, it is on midday here, so I'll be at school at the time of release, or well, what day is then :S

But I am still buying it through Steam, because here all markets are not always in time with the case and stuff. When Ep1 was released, it was out at markets after 2 days.

And I heard Steam has cheaper version without Ep1 and HL2 on the box. I already have 3 copies of HL2:DM, 2 copies of CS1.6, 3 copies of HL1 and 2 copies of CS:S. And that is quite bunch, all because of packages.

First I bought Half-Life Generation package with HL1, OP4, Blue Shift and CS1.5, then I bought CS: Anthology, then Half-Life 2 Vivendi release, which included HL2DM and CS:S too, and then CS:S + DoD:S package.

And I have various burned copies of HL1, the ones from 1998, and else stuff.

about 5 or 7am here in Britian, which means I'll be awake :D and I might being going into the Hospital at lunch time, meaning I can spend all afternoon becoming one of the first to complete it :D, I hope...

Is there somewhere a program that has the ability to calculate the exact launch time considering time-zones?

Talking about HL2 on consoles, I don't mind having PC games on consoles as long as gameplay of future PC games doesn't get affected by wild "consolization".
Look at Bioshock: compared to the old System Shock franchise imho it's kind of watered-down in gameplay terms. Still a really good game, but not a PC game anymore.

Ok, what is the time zone of valve, cause I'm planning to wake up early in the morning just to play Ep2 and be one of the first to complete it, and if I have that time zone I'll know the exact time in British, which I need
