What are your thoughts about tipping at a restaurant(not talking about hookers or strippers as we all know you don't mess with a pimps income). Do you guys tip and what percentage is your average? What causes you to tip higher or lower and do you guys tip at other places such as take out at restaurants or even at buffets?

Since I have served in a restaurant...done to go and now am a serving assistant at a buffet it astonishes me on some peoples tipping policy.

I usually tip 10-12%. If the server is attentive and courteous, I'll often tip up to 20%. You're there for food and service. If the service isn't there, why tip more than normal? At buffets, I'll usually tip lower since they don't have to do much.

i work in a bar here and because its not commonplace in the uk to tip, i'll be lucky if i get a quid tip. infact, some people think they're being generous and shoot a little wink when they let you keep their 10p change

yeah mate thanks, well generous. take this small amount of silver you've graced me with and shove it up your asshole

I don't tip, and I'm an asshole in restaurants.

That's because about 80% of the time they are dicks, too.

But I know it's customary to tip 7% or over in North America..

Oh god I bet you get your food spit in all the time or something along those lines. How are they dicks? You gotta remember when its busy servers are getting their ass kicked. Not tipping is a huge insult and I have seen girls cry over getting screwed out of tips. If they are actual dicks then they deserve that. Also...if you make special requests or are an asshole in a restaurant you should tip extra. That is probably why servers are an ass to you because your an ass to them. Lots of servers aren't afraid to dish it right back. You should try working in a restaurant and dealing with someone who is a dick. Its the most stressful thing to deal with when its super busy. Especially when they don't tip it will ruin their night. I strongly suggest you try serving and see what it's like. Since I did I always tip very well unless they really don't deserve it.

Well, I don't go out much (to restaurants anyways), and when I do they are genuine assholes to me, no joke. Only on like 2 occasions were they NOT assholes.. You should also note that I get my food before I'm an asshole to anyone, and also note that I'm only an asshole if they are an asshole first.

Oh yea, and on those 2 occasions I tipped an extra $20..

Maybe they are dicks because I'm young.. Discriminating pieces of shit, I say!

Back in my day people gave other people respect! Hell, if you got a 5 cent tip you were extremely happy, for it could buy you a lemon ice, a picture show, then you could ride the transit system, and still have enough money left over for a ride on the merry go whirl! Damn kids!

We don't generally tip here, it's included in the price I think.

Yeah that could be. I'm always nice to people until they give me a reason not to but teenagers are notorious for not tipping or tipping shitty so lots of servers give them crappy service. I have had a kid dine and ditch on me and I still remember what he looks like and will beat the crap out of him if I ever see him. Servers have to pay if you don't pay for the meal.

I'd never dine and dash unless I actually seen someone spit in my food or something like that, I know what it's like to have to pay (literally) for other peoples assholery. Like I said, I'm only a dick if they start it. I'm only nice and I only tip if they are nice to me first, otherwise I'm just a dick (until I get my order).

Thats fine then. When I serve I always try to be nice and I do something a lot of people don't. I add humor and get my tables to laugh. I feel that adds to their experience as most other servers just get their food and drinks.

I usually tip 10% rounded up to the nearest whatever I have in change. So usually quite a bit more than 10%.

im a waiter in new jersey, and believe me, 10% is not only uncommon, it's a straight up slap in the face. I usually make around 18-20%. 15% is considered the standard, and even that is disgustingly low. idk how it works over in europe but from what i understand the tip is usually included in the check already. for all you americans that tip 10-12% in a restaurant, especially with good service, **** you very much

If someone put a tip in the bill for me, i'd punch them in the mouth. Since when do they have the right to tell me how much I tip them?

Tips are generally 10% for us. If the waiter doesn't think that's enough, boo hoo. It's out of my damn pocket, any money that person gets they should be thankful for

See, now I'll tell you something: I like to tip. I like to tip, and I tip big. I've gone and gotten a $15 lunch and tipped $50 once because I enjoyed the service. But what you just said with that attitude? F*ck, dude, I'd give you a penny.

You're working at a restaurant and you're already making money. A tip is a tip; it's extra. You seem to forget that a tip is VOLUNTARY. So f*ck YOU for saying, "Oh, that patron only gave me 10%, waaaah." You're a cock, dude. At least they're tipping you something. At least you're getting extra pay.

Damn son, I come from a family of waitresses and restaurant owners and you piss me the hell off. What an ingrate.

Damnit. I've been into this thread atleast 3 times already, but every time I see the title I think it's going to be about cow tipping.

Never, unless its specifically stated otherwise.

As Darkside said, it's voluntary. If I feel you deserve a big fat tip (food on my table at a reasonable amount of time, always refills coming, you have a bit of personality, not at your table too often, not too sparce), you'll get one and I won't think twice about it. With that attitude, I'd leave you a penny at the bottom of my drink.

Food costs pittance in the states. You can afford to tip 20%

That in itself does not mean you have any reason to do so. If the staff deserve 20% then by all means feel free to give them that. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should have to.

This.

The tip doesn't matter on what I can give, it's what the server deserves.

I went to Applebee's a couple times with a few friends and we got this waiter. He was fantastic. He did all the listed a post back and more. I remember some friend ordered a ciabatta sandwich but he said it horribly. The server then made a comment about how it sounds like "chewbacca" bread and we then all made the wookie sound the best we could. I do believe I left him a $10 on a $20 bill.

Just because 15% is the norm doesn't mean it's guaranteed. If the server works for the tip, they'll get it.

Sure, I was just pointing out that tipping 20% in the states is less generous than 10% in the uk. The costing of eating out here is ridiculous.

I tip because I was a waiter once, remember how shity their pay is and how hard it is to get by without tips.

You're kidding right? :LOL::LOL:

I only tip for good service. That means a polite waiter/waitress, relaxed atmosphere and a fairly decent time on the food being prepared. Nothing else.

See now insulting me shows just how mature you are, and how ignorant you are. At my restaurant I work solely for tips, we don't get paid by the hour, we don't make a salary. In NJ it's not required to make a salary in a tipping business. So next time make sure you do your research before you start insulting people about things you obviously know little about.

Edit: my family owns over 40 restaurants and bars in northern new jersey and upstate new york (and i dont even work at one of them), that doesn't mean i know anything about restaurants 3000 miles away, so stop presuming to do the same.

Well they are offering you a service. A buck or two sounds good if they give you good service at a buffet by cleaning the plates up before you leave so you have room. You also have to remember that they have to clean up after you. It's not far off from a server really.

For those of you that don't believe in tipping...you guys really have NO idea what it takes to serve. It is without a doubt the most stressful and physically demanding job I have ever worked. It's not easy and a lot of times when a server screws up it could be so many things. Such as the kitchen screwing something up which happens ALL the time. Or some other serving taking the wrong food to a table...you gotta remember just because all you see is the server that's not the only person thats gonna screw things up for you.

Get a new job.

Seriously.

Why? Some people enjoy serving and those people who are good at it can make a lot in tips. It takes a lot of personality to work in a restaurant and the amount of knowledge you need to know makes it even harder. Serving isn't easy but you bust your ass to hopefully get a few more dollars by the end of the night and it sucks horribly when a table gives you nothing for all of your hard work. I have seen girls crying back in the cooler because their night was so stressful and people screwed them over. Serving isn't easy, so unless the server is a dick try to be nice to them. You will get an awful lot farther if your nice instead of picky and mean because that adds more work for the server and cooks often screw things up. So if your picky don't be surprised if your meal takes a while to come out of the kitchen screwed it up.

lol I'm in college, its the best money i could make right now. on a shitty night i can walk out with $125
That's really good. When I worked at fridays on an average night I would make around $30 and on weekends up to $80. it sucked.

Agreed 100%. It's ignorance like that of Darkside55 that makes me hate my job, but the benefits and rewards from the nice people that make me love it.

If you walk out with $120 on a bad night, you're in no position to moan about only been given 10% then.

Are you not paying attention? It's not about the money. I give every one of my customers, regardless of what they order, regardless of how rude or how nice they are, the same respect, and the best service I can provide. When I normally make between 15 and 20% for doing my job and doing it well, when you get some ignorant prick that walks in, orders $200 worth of food and drinks, gets great service, and leaves 20 bucks, that's a slap to the face. You can afford to eat hundreds of dollars worth of food, but come time to take care of the guy whos been taking care of you all night you go cheap? Come on, try to see it from my perspective.

Am I right in understanding tips are compulsory in the states?

Am I right in understanding tips are compulsory in the states?

Depends on the state. In New York, it's REQUIRED to tip, unlike other places where it's optional. You basically have 4 types of restaurants:

Salary and Mandatory tipping
No Salary and Mandatory tipping
Salary and non required tipping
No Salary and non required tipping <---worst

It just takes one push and they fall right over!

I'd never tip anyone. When I went to America it seemed almost compulsory.
