Tipping

I was unblocked a sink full of puke with, a straw, a glass, some tissue and my bare hands.

My employers drastically under equip me.

In fact, whilst I was doing it, some people offered me 30quid to just quit and keep my dignity.

only you can prevent accidental injury/death/dismemberment from glass shards and puke chunks

My point was that imo tipping is a really bad system in all lights compared to the better salary alternative - simple as. Not that this opinion is going to change an ingrained tradition but that doesn't prevent me pointing out how crap it is for everyone involved except the restaurant owner who gets to appear that his prices are lower and pay slave wages at the same time. Arguing that tips make you more motivated are kind of ridiculous - in the US it sounds like if you don't work hard for certain patrons all you lose is a tip because your self interest is more important, in Ireland/UK if you don't work hard, because of the higher wage, you get fired. Which would you think is going to motivate you more?

standardised wages is non existant in the service industry ..mostly because profit margins in running a restarant are so tight that you can literally lose your business overnight ..it's the way restaurants cut down on overhead while ensuring good service ..I've been to counntries where there's no tradition of leaving a tip and for the most part the service was lousy and the staff were boorish/rude ..why shouldnt someone give a tip to smeone who does a good job? at least in the service industries ..do you never tip the bartender? (guarenteed to get you served last), taxi driver? the baggage guy at the airport?

no one is saying that someone should be tipped for doing their job, they should be tipped for going above and beyond their job (wait staff being the exception)

If restaurants went around firing people that gave "OK" service, they'd be firing and hiring every day of the week. Tipping is a great way to get servers to be nice, friendly, and hard working. Simple as that. If a server is shit to her guests, the guests will not tip very well. If a server does a good job, the guests will usually tip better.

If you eliminated tipping and brought in a higher minimum wage, it would cost the restaurants a shit load more money, discouraging them from keeping their servers on for longer shifts or having to increase the price of food. The quality of the service would go down (due to having fewer servers on; have you ever seen a server get ten tables at once? It's not pretty) and fewer people would come into the restaurant to eat because of increased pricing.

"But they're paying the same anyway because of the tip". Maybe, but tipping gives people the choice to spend the extra buck because they feel that their server did a superb job. Better tipping means the customer gets better service next time they come in and secures a friendship with their server. Poorer tipping means the server probably did a sup-par job, and the server knows this. If they want a better tip, they'll do more to get it. (Ok, so some people are just assholes and always leave 5% tips)

On a side note, cooks get payed by the hour. If your system is so perfect, why do we give cooks an hourly wage but make servers work for tips?

Maybe because cooks rarely if ever have contact with the customers they make food for?
