Thought it'd be worth while to ask who's gotten themselves a Tivo (or other comparable DVR box), and what they think of it.
Has it really changed the way you watch TV or do you treat yours like a glorified VCR? And what do you love about your box or wish they had?

I've considered getting a Sky+ box (basically the same as Tivo) but I don't watch enough TV to make it worthwhile ... every time I go into the lounge to watch TV it doesnt take me long before I find something worth watching anyway. So many channels :imu:

I have a DVR provided by Adelphia. It's certainly worth it. I don't watch television all that often, but if there is a program, or series of programs, that I want to catch, I can set it to record all shows of a particular type or at a particular time and all that nice stuff. The real benefit for me (I'm not sure if this is available with the regular box) is the "On Demand" feature. Basically, we have something like 40 movie channels. Most of the movies shown are shit. Those movies which aren't shit (or some of the excellent series on those channels) can be tough to find since that would require searching through never ending lists in the guide. With the on demand stuff you just select the channel, a list pops up displaying ALL the movies that channel will be playing for the next few months or so (in nice categories or all at once) as well as ALL the episodes for ALL the multipart documentaries/series they may have. There are about 12 OD stations covering all the movie channels (Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, etc.) as well as some others (Discovery, History, TLC, Fit TV, cooking channel, PBS), and then there is one that plays films that are either very hard to find, classics, or still in theaters for a very small price (the others are totally free). This afternoon I just kicked back and watched three episodes from the fourth season (which I missed) of my favorite Showtime series, which hasn't been on in a while. There are hundreds of movies to pick from, so many shows, all sorts of interesting documentaries, all with no commercials and no viewing fee available to watch anytime you feel like it. They’re constantly building it up, so it’s really quite awesome.

Am I the only one that thinks that its a total waist of Money?

hehe, you said waist of money and I pictured someone who's waist was made out of dollar bills

There's not point in me getting Tivo, my Telewest digital box can set reminders for whatever programs you want, then your video recorder will tape it.

Well, I rofled...

I have Tivo and I would HIGHLY recommend it. It's more for dish than cable, though.
Reasons:
1) You don't watch commercials
2) You watch your favorite shows when you want, no need to structure your life around primetime
3) If you miss a bit, can't understand something or too much noise in the room you're watching in... just jump back 5 seconds and watch again!
4) You won't miss the latest episode of _____ when you're out of town or if you forget.

All in all, well worth the investment.

I think right now Tivo's giving out $100 rebates on their boxes too.
