So, althought the public demo has informed me I can play L4D on a 2.4 GHz Athlon 64 3800+ (just not host a server, probably), I still don't know who I'm going to buy from and even if I still might get it on Xbox.
Steam (UK territory):
L4D PC (e-game): $52.86 = ?34.28
Play.com (UK)
L4D PC Pre-order (boxed): ?22.99 [R.R.P. ?34.99]
L4D 360 Pre-order (boxed, obv.): ?34.99 [R.R.P ?49.99]
Amazon.co.uk
L4D PC Pre-order (boxed): ?19.97 [R.R.P. ?34.99]
L4D 360 Pre-order (boxed, obv.): ?29.97 [R.R.P ?49.99]
So Steam is selling the PC version for no discount off the Recommended Retail Price, whereas Play.com are undercutting them by 33% and giving you a hardcopy with box and manual, plus free delivery. Amazon.co.uk have set the price tag even lower than Play, albeit with no free delivery (and probably working out more expensive unless you're buying a lots of items).
Remind me again why I should be buying from Steam? To give more money back to Valve? For the preload and no waiting? I'm not sure that really cuts it. Sure, Valve can't do much about the fierce price war between Play and Amazon in the run-up to Christmas, but I do think Valve could be giving a more favourable rate for the UK market in consideration of this.
Plus, I've been thinking for some time about getting a 360 to play some of the fun games on XBLA like Castle Crashers, Super Puzzle Fighter, and other good non-FPS-deathmatch multiplayer. I was working under the assumption the game would be retailing at ?49.99, which I think is a total ripoff for any game when I think I could be buying several billion well-picked DVDs for that price. But, no, it's only ?34.99, so maybe I might get myself a 360 for Christmas, afterall.
P.S. Jesus H. Christ, Munro! Fix the effing 'pound sterling' sign already!
