i am seriously considering investing my money on far cry, i've beaten both of the demos that were released and had an absolute blast while doing so, the tension that escalades while i'm playing the games is incredible. but i've noticed a lot of you guys really don't like the game very much at all, i want to know what really turned you guys off on the game, and above anything else, how many people think it's worth buying and why?

Well, I dont like the game because, well, I just dont like the atmosphere and my computer doesnt do it any justice, but if you liked the demos then I dont know.

could you be a bit more specific, what was wrong with the atmosphere, i like the tension that it brings....was it too scary for you :p

Well, I am a bit of a pus... well, yeah that may have affected me but I dont know, also, the auto saves were annoying, you would have to load multiple times to kill enemies that were left after you saved. I found it an upward battle to get to each checkpoint.

If you have the computer to run it then you will enjoy it..I am :D

I got the game and its a must have.

If you have really low standards in computer games you may enjoy it.

I personally would save your money and wait for Doom 3. It has not replay value what-so-ever and a pretty bad multiplayer. The first time you play it, its a great Single-player experience, but the ending is bad. I would give the game 8/10. Great graphics though.

If your computer can handle it well then buy it. You won't be sorry. They are releasing patchesto the game that will implement even more awesome graphical features.

He could buy both farcry and doom 3 ;). But if you dont have cash to burn i would go w/doom 3 :D

Yep, you should get it. Very good game and surprising long. :)

exactly what aspect(s) of far cry did you specifically not enjoy?

a lot of people have problems with the auto-save feature, which i think is a pretty good idea b/c of the additional challenge and tension it adds, and from what i played of the demo it's pretty high rate, what do you mean by low standards?

i'll leave the the game stories to rpg's, can't say i played half-life for it's "riveting'" story

If your computer can run it and you liked the demos you'll love the game. Buy it.

I thought the following were totally crap with little to no thought behind them

-The story
-The dialogue
-The character design
-The AI
-The structuring of some potentially fantastic gameplay moments.

Like i've said elsewhere the game is jam packed full of B-grade efforts. Fantastic engine with a piece of shit game slapped on top. Of course if you have low standards and don't really care/notice things like what i'm acutely aware of you'll have a ball.

would you call your definition of a "b grade effort" a techinically bad game?

I never understood why allot of people hate this game so much.. other than a few bits of cheesy dialogue its a very solid and very enjoyable game and well worth the buy.

i bust say that i love games. Especially good ones. And while playing far cry (i own the game btw) i can tell it is a good game.

But to me, it is rather boring. The levels show no inspiration... there are hardly any guns, the veichles are limites by the fact that there is only an island, and there is nothing to do.

whats the point in a huge, free roaming landscape if the only places of intrest are places that you are supposed to go? i mean, couldnt they have put a small hut on an island somewhene with a secret gun or something... or just soemthing interesting inside? but no, each level is as bland as anything.

i can see how it is a good game it just doesnt intrest me. even on my most bored of moments i cant be bothered to finish it. im about 2 thirds of the way through, but i just cant be bothered to play it...

basically, i would buy it if there are no games coming out soon / if you have lots of money, but if you dont have much cash and your looking forward to some imminent releases, i'd save your money.

singleplayer offers little replayability as the game is suprisingly linear, and multiplayer is appaulingly unbalanced, but assault is quite good... but only if you are an engineer. Far cry has its moments, but theres just not enough in there except a bland, linear, uninteresting campaign wich in my opinion is rather boring.

*edit* its a great game though :D

plus the save game thing isn't a problem. You can still quicksave with the console with no effort. Takes maybe three keypresses to quicksave.

Technically....hmm, in an artistic field such as gaming i can't call something good for meeting certain technical specifications.

I'll try to make my pov clearer. When I hear a stupid line of dialogue it just stabs right through me like an arrow and i'm totally drawn OUT of the game. When i see a stupidly designed character a similar thing happens. As i go through the game all these things start adding up and by the end it feels like a very mediocre experience.

The bad story point was not so much that the story is bad but how it is told. Many stories have a bad/simple premise but are delivered to the player in extraordinary ways much like Half-Life 1. I felt the way in which the far cry story was told was very boring. Kill lots of bad guys, chat on the radio to that guy to reveal the next mission/story plot, kill lots of bad guys chat on radio to that guy to reveal the next missions/story plot piece. Rinse repeat.

Thrills i got from Far Cry were basically centered around the graphics. When i became aware of what the engine was capable of seeing a huge amount of the environment, lovely looking trees and islands i thought it was really cool. Driving the dingy through those Apocalypse Now style rivers was also pretty damn cool. But for me personally, technicalities like graphics and game engine capabilities (vehicles) isn't enough to win me over.

so you purposely nitpick and nitpick until all your nitpicks add up and no matter how hard you try you can't enjoy the game anymore?

i can't say that's of the most healthy attitudes to bring into a game when your playing it, especially pc games which are known to have glitches and sorts.

i'm not saying that you shouldn't have high standards for a hyped up game, but the reasons you described that you didn't like far cry made me think you were bordering obsessive compulsive.

Far cry is good game. Not great, but good. Kept me busy a lil while anyway. But it IS a lil difficult to some people(i don't see how, it was easy for me) I much prefer COD over FC, but i have been waiting for a realistic damage, team tactics WW2 game for a LONG time, and COD fitas those specifically. But Far Cry has it's own engine, and it is fun sneaking around the forest to pop a headshot into some unlucky guy. For some reason, FC felt like HL in a distant way. The story is a lil cliched, and the twist at the end was just a lil like WTF? But overall o decent game, and if they got rid of the bugs, it'd be a F***ing awesome game. So yeah, buy it if you want.

Half-Life 1 is to Far Cry as Michaelangelo is to a 5 year old drawing pictures with his crayon.

I hope that sort of makes my opinion a little clearer. But as the old adage goes "everyones different". Some people may absolutely love the 5 year olds crayon drawings. But fans of Michealengelo may look upon the crayon drawings by the 5 year old and not be impressed.

If you asked this a few months ago I would say buy it, cause I enjoyed the 3/4 of the gmae before it got really repetetive. But with the MOH demo coming out today and Doom3 so close I can taste it, I would recommend waiting for D3.

hers a little thing to rack your brains over.

if far cry had the graphics of, say- half lfie, would you like it?

i would think it is a pile of shit... because the graphics are the whole point of far cry, the rest is average.

:)

I liked both demo's alot - I loved the full game, it really is fun the people that dont like farcry are the ones that cant see the game for what it is. So it does'nt have a groundbreaking story and is a bit obvious but the gameplay does that justice. Gameplay > story.

Far Cry is probably the best FPS we've seen in a while. The gameplay is solid, the graphics are revolutionary and beutiful, and its one of the longer shooters to come out recently. I acctually think I might go play it now. Now go! Buy it!! You wont be disapointed, especially if you liked the demo.

If you're a bit of a puss, you can give me your copy of HL2. You're gonna wet your pants x10, almost literally.

i think it had a weak storyline, and i only really enjoyed it the first 5 missions..

Okay, why the hell do people hate this game ?

The story, yes, it is cheesy, but the storyline isn't the major turning point in a FPS's. RPG's, yes storyline is *VERY* important. Far Cry's story gave you a simple task (Save Val), and you had to go through the works to do it. Blow up that wall ? Fine. If they had asked you to do it repeatedly, yes, I would've found it boring. But it was like a B-Grade film's story, with all the special effects of a A-Grade film ! The enviroments were rarely annoying, and the soldiers were brilliantly done, and were very hard at times. If you hate HARD fps's, yes, you probably will dislike this, but I find that those who hate hard fps's are often n00bs at fps genre anyway.

I got it free with my AMD 64 CPU :P

Same here hehe. Decent game, imho. Very pretty, showd it off to the folks. Then again, I'm the kind of player who oohs and aahs at speculars and normal maps and reflections and crap.

i only liked it for its looks and ambushing stupid soldier guys
the moment those crazy monkey things come somewhat early on in the game, it sucked lol. if it was mroe liek a war game where u just kilkl soldiers n'stuff it'd be great. no monkey, more soldiers. well i didnt play that far inj so i could be wrong, ahhhh dont flame me farcry lovers

p.s. i would say save ur money for doom3 unless ur rich :)

one of the reasons i am buying far cry is b/c the price has gone down, that's the way i buy games, wait until the price goes down, i don't have the money for doom3 anyway

The combat would still be better than Half-Life's, so yes I would still like it.
