i was just curious as to how the moderating works around here? do u guys take shifts? or r u obligated to be here a certain amount of time to stay a moderator? and how were u selected? along with do u guys always make sure theres a moderator in the room? thats a lot of questions to answer hehe. sorry if this has been addressed before, and i'd also like to say u guys r doing a great job, thx alot for yur time.

Yeah I wanna know how Kamakiri became a mod. He's the nice chap who e-mailed Gabe and asked him if I could take the Valve tour.

Well I've been a moderator for a day. I live in Australia as well as Overdrive.

So basically the different timezones works out in our favour because the forums are petrolled quite well 24/7. I'm a huge lurk so since I've just started I'll be putting in plenty of time to look after this forum.

Oh and this is moved to off-topic now. ;)

Edit: Spidcodfry, I guess me doing something like that stood out aswell. So I guess the other staff think i'm here for the community which I am. Your a top bloke mate. :)

How? I close threads. And sometimes move them.
Shifts? Both general editing mods are swedes, we are on at roughly the same time.
Obligated? Nope.
How did I become a mod? I dont know. I just one day had general editing. I didnt even notice it at first. I did volonteer for hardware though.
Always a mod on? Bah, what do I care!?

There, that's a model moderator :p

And if you wonder, then yes I am a very bad example ;)

I'd spend more time in my birthplace: the music forum, but no one really goes there. But i'll think of something :evil grin: I'm on mostly all day here. Actually, now that I think of it, I've almost become a night owl because of this place. my sleep/awake hours are shifted massively.

I too might be a bad example....

Is Munro looking for more help? I emailed him two weeks ago but he hasn't answered yet.

You dont ask to become a moderator, you get selected if we think you're active, helpful, and level headed enough :)

Well I read somewhere on these boards (a while back) that Munro was looking for a new group of mods (about 20) I think it was D33 that posted the info: so I asked D33 about applying he told me to email Munro. It's as if I had applied for a "job", when you see an ad you send a letter of motivation with personal info and stuff.

I know what you mean about asking to be a mod, almost everyone here has asked to become one. But no harm done right?

It's actually best to speak to D33 nowadays, he does a lot of work involving moderator selection.

I just check over the forums when I have a spare moment, but when I get online for the first time every day, I have a big haul in the Half-Life 2 Discussion forum- locking, deleting, moving... you name it. Big job, that :hmph: I'll usually also look over the Off-Topic forum to see if there's anything to manipulate there as well.

^ and thats partially to do with the fact that me and Farrow are at College all day, and don't have too much time for forums... but we do it. Oh and, I never asked to be a mod, it just happened :) Thanks :)

Do you guys debate sometimes on who should be a moderator? Or is it usually just picked by Munro or D33 without much discussion?

Well, i went away for a day and half the memebers had become mods, so if it is debated, its done in some secret place behind my back....

If i got mod status i would be too busy in the secret porn forum that they have to even bother with moderating.... ;)

It's debated in a sense. If there's someone I or anyone else bring to the attention of the other moderators and they all turn around and say "but he does x" and "his attitude is x" then it makes a big difference.

You can't go adding someone that's going to annoy many of the original moderators because you'll only cause bad atmosphere.

As for how much do we put in, everyone puts in their own amount within their own time. Each person on the team plays a key role, for example without Abom|nation the general discussion board ( now Half-Life discussion ) would turn to crap quite quickly. He knows what sort of stuff should be posted, knows how the community on that board will react, etc, etc, etc.

I'm usually active, on and off between 2pm and 6am GMT.

Thanks for the kind words :)

Yeah, I know it's a cliché to say this, but the site is a big machine, with everyone being the individual 'cogs'... or something.
