*DISCLAIMER : Don't comment/spam on this letter. If you want to comment on it, start another thread or PM me. Sign it if you want, but don't bash it; this doesn't need to turn into a name-calling, whining thread; we have enough of those as it is. I just thought I'd try to make the majority of our feelings known in a professional way. After the letter stops getting signatures, I will email it to Valve. If a mod feels this is off topic, feel free to delete/move. I just felt it was something I needed to do to try and pull this community together for once instead of us ripping each other apart in the forums. END DISCLAIMER*
Valve,
I have been quietly awaiting the release of Half-Life 2 for many years now (ever since the first hint of a sequel and before it was officially announced). I've not written you before, but I've taken it upon myself to write a letter to you now on behalf of our community regarding (what we feel are) recent failures in public relations. We understand that making a game is extremely hard work as well as very time consuming, but we can't help but feel a little jaded with regards to the past couple of weeks, some might feel months.
In the wake of E3 and the recent media blitz (screenshots, binks, etc), the hype over HL2 has been growing tremendously, and it should only be expected that people will get overly excited and unrealistic about a possible release. Then you made a statement that the HL2 preload would begin last Friday (Aug 20th, 2004). I'm sure you also realize that this particular announcement would drive anticipation into a frenzy; many view this event as a prelude to a gold announcement in the near future. When you announced you would delay the preload to the following Monday, people were upset, but for the most part the majority forgave you, as you were releasing a pretty hefty CS: Source update. However, Monday has now come and gone, with no word from you whatsoever.
The community as a whole can accept delays; a majority of us know how much hard work goes into what you do. However, we do not appreciate the lack of explanation. You made a statement and failed to follow through; it happens to us all. But the fact that we do not even get an explanation/reason for this is disconcerting and is beginning to alienate some of your fan base.
We, the undersigned of this letter, offer this advice: if there is any doubt that you will not be able to make a certain date, do not tell us about it. We would rather wait in silence than to have our hopes repeatedly lifted and dropped. At this point, we can't help but feel that a complete blackout of communication regarding any phase of the HL2 release from Valve would be more beneficial than the missing of "deadlines"; you can inform us at the time it is ready.
Good luck with the rest of your development, and we all eagerly await the release of HL2: when it's done!
Signed,
