Today is a very important day

Back before planned obsolescence of consoles!

Back in the days when a gaming system could survive a nuclear holocaust and you could rise from the ashes of Armageddon and give it a furious blow and have everything work properly again!
QFT :)

I owned a Dreamcast for awhile too and damn was it a finely engineered console. The discs fit perfectly in it's CD-ROM drive, was whisper quiet, no overheating, my only gripe was that I didn't like the controller compared to the PSX and PS2. BTW, is it just me or did Microsoft steal it's controller design for the 360 from the Dreamcast? The only thing missing is the right analog stick.

The PS2 too also was (and still is) a fine machine. I still have my launch console and I still play the hell out of it. No problems whatsoever. Where did the next-gen consoles go wrong with it's shoddy, unreliable designs in comparison?

My first DC games were Shenmue then Resident Evil:Code Veronica. Never got the chance to play Sonic Adventure because I got greedy and traded the console in for some new PS2 game I wanted at the time. I still regret not playing Sonic Adventure to this day and will probably never get that chance now. :(

Nah, I broke 5 Dreamcasts. 6th one still works. My first one broke within days.

PS2 had a lawsuit for their consoles. Look up 'PS2 Disc read error lawsuit'.

Enough about quality you guys. You remember them through rose tinted glasses, or maybe you were lucky or didn't use them much.

what world you people are from? dc controller similiar to xbox360?

I don't know much about it being similar to a 360 controller, but it was indeed a very comfy and intuitive pad to use. Don't knock it unless you played with it - I'd pick it over this generation's console's pads any time.

Only bad thing was the cord coming out of the bottom of the pad.

They both even have the L & R analog triggers on the back

I'll put this here too:

**** the haters, the dreamcast had so many ****ing quality titles. Seriously if you were to reach into a pile of DC games the chances are a good number of them would be amazing and the rest would be great to ok. You do that today and you're garunteed to get a bunch of shit.

Loved Sonic Adventures. The first level itself rocked, a freaking ORCA chased you across a wooden walkway, while the camera showed it off perfectly.

And Sega Marine Fishing was one of my favorite game, mainly because I had the fishing rod controller that you flicked to cast. I'd wake up every day, and start the thing up for great games on it. Remember Soul Calibler? Awesome. And Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, Crazy Taxi, Toy Commander, Unreal Tournament, Re-Volt, and ECHO THE ****ING DOLPHIN! Why has nobody mentioned that?

It also had Virtua Tennis long before the teats of that franchised had been milked into wrinkliness. My friend and I sank many hours into coop doubles.

The Dreamcast was even worse, they ripped off the N64 controller(minus the C-pad) and made it insanely huge.
I don't agree with any of that. The control pads aren't actually as big as the photo I posted. And they were light as hell.

What difference does it make? It fits in your hand perfectly. With the N64 controller you can't even access all of the controls unless you have 3 hands.

Some History for the thread
Sega Dreamcast

In September 1999 (the date 9/9/99 featured heavily in U.S. promotion), Sega launched the Dreamcast game console in North America. The Dreamcast was competitively priced, partly due to the use of off-the-shelf components, but it also featured technology that allowed for more technically impressive games than its direct competitors, the Nintendo 64 and Sony PlayStation. An analog 56k modem was also included, allowing gamers to play multi-player games online on a home console for the first time, featuring titles such as the action-puzzle title Chu Chu Rocket, Phantasy Star Online, the first console-based MMORPG, and the innovative Alien Front Online, the first console game with online voice chat.

The Dreamcast's launch in Japan was a failure. Launching with a small library of generally uninteresting software and in the shadow of the upcoming PS2, the system would not gain great success, despite several successful games in the region.

The Western launch a year later was accompanied by a large amount of both 1st party and 3rd party software and an aggressive marketing campaign. It was extremely successful and earned the distinction of "most successful hardware launch in history," selling a then-unprecedented 500,000 consoles in its first week in North America.[22] Sega was able to hold onto this momentum in the US almost until the launch of Sony's PlayStation 2. The Dreamcast is home to several innovative and critically acclaimed games of the time, including one of the first cel-shaded titles, Jet Set Radio; Seaman, a game involving communication with a fish-type creature via microphone; a rhythm game involving the use of maracas, Samba de Amigo; and Shenmue, an adventure game of vast scope with freeform gameplay and a striking attempt at creating a detailed in-game city. Despite receiving critical acclaim, these titles failed to garner much public attention in the face of the upcoming Playstation 2 launch.

Faced with debt and competition from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, Sega officially discontinued the Dreamcast hardware in 2001. The final game Sega released for it was NHL 2K2.

How come no one gave a shit over here when the dreamcast came out?

Sony was dominating back then, bro.

The Dreamcast was a good system and had good games, but SEGA had been making mistakes and getting beat by Nintendo for two decades before Sony even got in the picture.

Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega 32x, Sega CD, Sega Saturn. The only system that was very successful out of these was the Genesis. (which eventually got crushed by the Super Nintendo) They were financially on thin ice.

And Sony was beating down the mighty Nintendo, so obviously SEGA didn't have a chance against Sony.

I thought Sony still was domianting, bro.

I mean... Wii... 360...

I know ay, ****ing wankers.

I didn't say they ripped them. Someone else said that SEGA ripped the N64 controller off, but didn't say why.

Anyway, all I said was "They were similar to the look and feel of the xbox 360 controllers".

Sorry for noob question, but why is the Dreamcast great?
It just looks like a mix of a N64 and a PSX rip-off and from what i've heard there aren't any decent games for it.
Wherever you heard that from, whoever told you that is full of shit. I'm having a hard time believing you ever actually heard that from somewhere considering how glorious the DC was; who would really say "There aren't decent games for Dreamcast" among people who have actually PLAYED a Dreamcast? Methinks maybe you just made up that "from what I heard."

Let me break it down for you guys: NO BAD GAMES. Not one. Dreamcast's shittiest game is worth at least two 7-out-of-10 titles on any other system. Go ahead and wiki the list of Dreamcast games if you doubt it; look at those titles. They're all gold. To list all the great games here would be impossible; I'd hit the forum's character limit before I could.

Best launch titles in history, the controller was wonderful (I actually resent people saying DC's controller is the precursor to the 360 controller; 360 controller feels like garbage compared to the way the Dreamcast controller fits in your hands), the VMU was a neat little way to store your data, online console gaming in its infancy, great games, and the system itself is diehard. Like Dumb Dude, I have a 9/9/99 launch system that still works. Also, the Dreamcast arcade stick? You can run that shit over with a truck. That's not hyperbole. YOU CAN RUN IT OVER WITH A TRUCK AND IT SHRUGS IT OFF LIKE A BEAST. Best official arcade stick ever. I put that thing through Soul Calibur and Capcom vs. SNK every day for like four or five years straight and it still works better today than the PoS Madcatz stick I bought for SFIV.

Maybe a lot of people in this thread are thinking, "How is it the best console ever?" You'd only really know if you owned a Dreamcast. If you did, it would be impossible for you to name a better console; as a console's merit is defined by how much fun you have playing games on the thing, I defy anyone to tell me a time better spent than with Soul Calibur, or Crazy Taxi, playing Chu Chu Rocket online, playing four player Power Stone, blasting it up in Ikaruga, or saving the Earth through dance in Space Channel 5.

I agree the controller was more comfortable and better in some ways, except for that the analog stick on the 360 is better, but it's also too sensitive on the PC, so

Some of the ones that I played a lot were Shenmue I, Tony Hawk 2, Sega Rally 2, Phantasy Star Online & PSO ver2, Hydro Thunder, Street Fighter *.*, Sega Bass Fishing, playing Quake III and NBA online. House of the Dead 2, Vigilante 8, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Soul Calibur and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2, Crazy Taxi 1, Sega GT and Revolt

I used to play online with my girlfriend for a few years. There was one game with voice chat where you blew up monsters or something. The particle effects looked so awesome. She and her brother used to play Bomberman Online all the time.

Also - what was that airship RPG? Skies of Arcadia. That was really good.

There was some other quest game - Soul Reaver - yeah, my friend used to play that all the time.

I also had Daytona racing 2 or whatever it was called and you could play it online. An upgrade from one of the most successful arcade games ever.

Jet Grind Radio - picked that up used for a few dollars. That was pretty slick.

The Dreamcast also had Bleem! It was an emulator that allowed you to play Playstation games on the dreamcast, but in high resolution with a higher framerate and in VGA and cleaner texture filtering and sound. SO I used to play Gran Tourismo on my Dreamcast with better graphics! :D

And Namco Musem - never found better control in Pole Position than with the Dreamcast controller to this day. The analog gas, brake and steering was spot on. I could beat that game only on the Dreamcast. I would get in the zone on that.

Oh shit, looking through the list of games, it seems like I missed out on dozens of the best games. I just never knew they were available. Probably sold out every time.

Also you could browse on the internet. (pron)

Anyway, I might pick up some of the games I missed out on one day.

The age of exploration has dawned upon the world of Arcadia. Brave adventures set sail across the vast skies in search of treasures untold. And, where there is treasure, there will be Air Pirates...

SKIES OF ARCADIA

yeah. I loved that game but somewhere along the lines I got lost and sailed around aimlessly. I should still have that game.

Love my Dreamcast to bits. So much playtime racked up on that thing and my original console still works too :)

I'd have to agree with Darkside too, there are no bad games on the Dreamcast.

No Headhunter love?

I need to play rez, you keep reminding me of that warbie :P

I actually resent people saying DC's controller is the precursor to the 360 controller; 360 controller feels like garbage compared to the way the Dreamcast controller fits in your hands
I haven't held a Dreamcast controller so long I forgot how it feels. :(

I suppose your right though. Now that I think back on it, the DC controller was actually more comfortable than it looks. It's bulky appearance from the topside is deceiving. The size+contours on the underside fit perfectly in your hands and it's actually alot thinner than one would think. (underside screenshot of the controller anyone?) I guess most of us are just used to controllers that fit slightly smaller in our palms than the DC pad. Like others said though, the cord coming out of the bottom probably was the only thing that sucked about it.

BTW, I never finished the second quest in Alone in the Dark either. This thread makes me more sad the longer it continues. ;(

I've got to get a DC somewhere now. What do they go for on ebay these days?

I agree the controller was more comfortable and better in some ways, except for that the analog stick on the 360 is better
^Agree

I remember how painful it was for my thumb to play the DC longer than 30 mins. If the DC analog stick had a concave depression like the 360 controller, it would've been perfect.

I need to play rez, you keep reminding me of that warbie :P

Bit by bit I sense you succumbing.

Now ...

... get hold of a 360 and Rez HD. Sit in a dark room with the biggest display you can find and the loudest 5.1 system available. Don't cheapen it with less. Play Rez from start to finish. It won't take long. This experience will be one of the most defining moments in video gaming for you. If not, you have no magnificence in your soul.

Fear is the mind killer.

Back when I played PSO online, my friends kept telling me "you need to play Rez!". Never have though.

holy shit really??!!1

them every cntroller copied that old snes controller whit those fours arrow shaped buttoms!

You mean the directional pad? The D-Pad? Actually the NES was the first one with that, and SEGA had a square shaped pad on their master system (released about a year later) that was arguably better.

NES Controller:

controller from the Sega Master System (competed with NES)

random web page hosting the image said:
It's pretty obvious that this controller is inspired by the NES controller. If we follow along the Sega branch of the family tree, we'll notice a trend - Sega controllers follow a straight line progression in this chart. Every one has similarities to the previous controller design, but also borrows ideas from the competitors (namely Nintendo.)
And who the hell cares?

This is how technology has evolved since the beginning of time. Shit, when a competitor comes up with a great idea that revolutionizes the market, if you can't compete then you fail.

It's an input device. There aren't too many different ways to implement buttons.

Might as well add this to the thread - Previous SEGA systems:

Happy Cirno day!

I didn't come on here yesterday ;_;

Speaking of controllers, the only 'negative' (and trust that I use the word in the loosest sense) with the DC controller is that Sega abandoned the breakthrough they'd done with the Saturn controller, and adopted the four button face that's become today's standard. Saturn's controller, with its six button face, is honestly the better controller.

Agreed, 6 buttons is so much better, it really disappoints me that controllers continue with the 4 button layout. On the other hand, any game worthy of 6 grouped buttons is worthy of a special controller anyway. Arcade Stick.
