When I first heard about this game, I must admit that I was very excited. After all, I rather enjoyed pretty much every game thus far released with Tom Clancy somewhere in the name of the game. Add in the fact that a decent flight Sim had not been released for quite some time & well, my expectations were running high. Perhaps a little too high. So it was with a fair amount of excitement that I installed "Tom Clancy: H.A.W.X" & headed in game.

It took only a few moments of actually playing the game, that I found my excitement rapidly start to fade. What was excitement only moments before, was now quickly turning to one of puzzlement. Since when did Tom Clancy allow his name to associate with what I felt to be a bargain bin quality game? Perhaps I was expecting a little too much to start out with, but after giving the game a decent, if admittitly short 3 hour play test, I ended up feeling the same way at the end of those 3 hours, as I did after those first few initial moments of actually playing & that was that I felt "Tom Clancy: H.A.W.X" was nothing more than an overly simplified & very arcade like flight Sim.

That's not to say that the game isn't any fun, it's just NOT the type of quality you have come to expect from a game that Tom Clancy is associated with. Such as with the Rainbow Six series.

Quoted from official site:
As the era of the nation-state draws toward its end, the world of warfare is evolving rapidly. New challenges demand new solutions, sometimes with unpredictable outcomes.

For many years, state-sponsored militaries have struggled to maintain and modernize their forces. Increasing budget restrictions and difficulties in recruiting skilled personnel have led many countries to seek other solutions. More and more nations now rely increasingly on Private Military Companies (PMC) – elite mercenary groups staffed with equally elite personnel - to support their field operations.

PMCs have proven to be excellent partners in respect to efficiency, skills, low prices, and reliability. They’ve been able to fulfill most of the mission normally handled by regular armies, without risking political fallout.

In time, these private military corps diversified their field of operations, from mere securing land objectives to motorized assault and counter-intelligence. It was not long before a few of these PMC secured enough resources to require being involved complete support air and sea-bound operations.

It was while reading through the "Official" info about the game posted on Ubisoft's website after having played the game for awhile previous to writing this, that got me thinking. I simply have to be missing something here, because everything I have read, would indicate that H.A.W.X would be an excellent game. True, what game released does not garner it's fair share of hyperbole, but even taking that into consideration, the game still left me wanting... & in a big way. While I am trying hard to not be negative, I am finding very little ( So Far ) that makes the game stand out, let alone worth spending $49.95 on.

Perhaps the game looks better under Vista & DirectX 10, but running it under WinXP & DirectX 9 does not ( in my opinion ) look anywhere near like the cutting-edge game it is being called. I have every setting in options maxed out, with AA & AF the highest they will go, with a screen resolution set to 1280x1024, which is sadly the highest my old monitor supports. Even so, I feel that the visuals are not all that impressive. ( Don't let the below Screenshot fool you. My Game does not look anywhere near that nice. )

I'm in no way trying to provide a review for the game. I'm more like venting my frustrations with the way a game is, because it did not meet my expectations. I will continue to play, with the hope that it gets better.

If you are thinking of getting this game, I would only advise you to really give it some thought. As it stands, I do not feel the game is worth it's current price tag in any way. I would be interested in reading what others here who have the game, thought about it.

Am I in fact just simply wrong in my assessment?

wait for the month long reviews...not the initial cluster**** of reviews that can make a game popular. I hated Killzone 2 and thought for the 1st few levels were fun but then the shit hit the fan

Well said, but in my case, I actually didn't read any reviews on the game prior to getting it, which is not the norm for me. I tend to try to read up a little about any given game a little before getting it, if for no other reason, than to get a general idea about what ( one person thinks ) the game is like.

Stemot,

How far are you in the game?

Quite far I think, don't know the mission number, and I don't want to spoil the story for you. I'll just say I've switched employer twice and have been in that situation for a few missions.

Good to see some classic MRG review content back in action. I have to admit I had little to no interest in HAWX before this, now I may pick it up when it comes to the bargain bin.

Thank you for the kind words BHC. They are much appreciated. As I am not that far in the game, I did not feel I had the right to attempt a review & apologize if my original post came across as such. Perhaps I just might once again jot a few thoughts down, in regards to the stack of games I have sitting here.

Stemot,

I have read about a few plot twists & while the facts seemed to be vague, the story sounds interesting. As I said, i'll continue playing. Perhaps my thoughts about the game will change.

I never buy games like this on PC, I prefer buying them for the 360 for achievements.:) Makes it more worth the money IMO.:p

Also, the story in HAWX is nothing reat, in fact I'd say its one of the most boring and lame stories in a Tom Clancy game in years.

Since he sold his name to Ubisoft Linky

Anyway, HAWX was awful. A few minutes with the demo was enough to tell me that. The controls respond better to a keyboard than a joystick. The ground textures look absolutely terrible up close and arn't that great from a distance.

The "assistance" thingy was just plain stupid. If the aircraft can perform those manuvers let me do them while in the cockpit of the aircraft. And more importantly, if the aircraft cant do them, don't let them do it. The vast majority of the aircraft in the game simply can't pull off the manuvers that they regularly use in game.

Its only saving grace, in my eyes, was that it did have alot of niceley modeled aircraft. But all the ones I used in the demo (F16, AV8B, Su-30, F-15 Active, F-22, Su-47, F-20 & Mirage F1) all felt exactly the same.

Once again my theory that every Tom Clancy game made after Raven Shield is awful has been proven true.

In conclusion: Bad game. If you want an arcade flight game get Ace Combat, if you want a realistic one get Falcon 4.0 or LOMAC. Just don't buy HAWX.

Maybe you won't like it, and I can understand why some people wouldn't, it's very arcadey in it's flying, the missions were you have to avoid radars are dull and the story really isn't that great. Me? I love the arcadeness of it as I can't stand real sims, and it's responsive enough on a pad to pull off some crazy crap.

Be under no illusions, the game is pretty much the same from start to finish, just with more intense missions. I love it though.

Your telling people not to bother with it based on the demo? Fair enough as the gameplay is the same throughout, but the missions do get alot better.

Then you obviously did not play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, or Splinter Cell Double Agent on the 128-bit consoles(I.e. XB1, PS2 and GC).

Played this at Fry's
Bloody hard to control but pretty good

Pandora Tomorrow on the PS2 was good, but hard.

It's similar to the Ace Combat series. Not nearly as good though. A fun game nevertheless.

How does it look without bloom turned on?
