Though a contradiction in terms, tomshardware.com have done a preview of HL2: here

Haven't read it myself yet, so can't say if there's anything new or not.

EDIT: having read it now, I can safely say that tom should stick to hardware after all :|

I fail to see the proper link. Fix, please.

Nothing new, just a recap of what was seen at e3. Thanks anyway.

Hl2 is so hyped/popular even my grandma knows about it.

your second link should point to HERE I imagine.

You should fix the link to the preview.

And wth are tomshardware doing a review on a computer game ?

They often do, i mean games are widly used for benchmarking.

This isn't funny anymore. If i see more hype i'll crack a testicle. Just give us the damn game Valve....

Yeah, but imo it's still wrong for a hardware site to do a software review.

Textures and environments were beautiful. But again, graphically, Half-Life 2 won't impress those who have already played through Far Cry and Unreal Tournament 2004.

Bullshit

Watching the apartment video, its graphics blew everything in farcry and UT04 away.

Agreed what was that guy smokin

Ive played both those games and i still piss my pants everytime i see a hl2 screenshot.

Well, the environments of far cry were good, you just can't deny that. However the facial models/characters and animation was kinda lame. I remember seeing a glitch in which the gun is "standing" on the sand by itself (just the way in the buggy first demo)

UT2004, ok-standard graphics. What's with these reviewers? everyone seems to consider UT good. Except onslaught and vehicles, there is no difference between UT2003 and UT2004

And Steam, Valve's new content delivery system, was/is garbage. And the hype of Half-Life 2 died. Fans were bitter. People cried and whined. People who bought ATI cards with free Half-Life 2 coupons threatened lawsuits. Through no fault of their own, ATI looked like jackasses.
nice to know they're being un-biased </sarcasm>

Some people sees something in UT04 about graphics that I don't. Maybe it's my eyes?

Maybe they are confused with Unreal Engine 3? :)

The graphics may be better in FarCry, BUT can it run on the loweste hardware specification that HL2 can? And does it have Gordon Freeman as the main charactor? Don't think so... :)

They also said far cry's physics are amazing. Is that dumb or what? From all i've heard, far cry has VERY basic physics. You can roll things around and push things but nothing breaks? Thats lame.

Yes, that is true. And besides that, the story it self is not that great. A guy with his girlfriend us out on a boat, some mercenary dislike that, and blews the ship apart. The main charactor comes to a island which is the maincenter for experementing with gorillaz and other monkeys, and he find himself among invisable creatures. :(

I don't want to seem like a HL2 fanboy, but geesh. Super Mario has a more trustworthy story. :)

not to mention far cry is badly optimized even for ATI 9800 pro/xt - I mean I had framerate skips even with that.

lets face it ...hl2 is nothing less or nothing more than a next gen engine game,so is equal to farcry and ut2004.

terrible preview, the people at tom's hardware are monkeys, they cannot write in english!

Far Cry/UT 2004/PainKiller were/are the last great games of this generation. Half-Life 2, Halo 2 and possibly Doom 3 will be the first games of the next generation (I say possibly Doom 3 because the only thing next-gen about Doom 3 is the graphics).

Anyway, as for Far Cry having better graphics then HL2, it all comes down to taste really. I don't like the plasticy look that much, thats why i gravitate more towards the realism in HL2 over FC.
FC has its bells and whistles but its nothing spectacular.
As for UT 2004, the graphics don't compare to Far Cry but that game has the best level design for any game ever. Period.
