I bought halflife the day it first hit the shelves back in 98 but due to work, health probs and other games coming out I've never managed to finish it (got about a quarter of the way through.)

Do you think I should start from scratch and play it even though graphics are, well... a bit dated and do you think I would get more enjoyment out of halflife 2 if I played halflife first?

btw I gotta say that the halflife community is HARDCORE!!! do you guys/gals ever think of anything else apart from halflife2, steam and bedding alyx?

let the flamin begin...... :flame:

peace!! :sniper:

Play with the new hi-res version on Steam....looks way better.

Of course you should play Half-Life 1 before Half-Life 2! Graphics, pish posh! It's the gameplay that counts.

I wish it could be so, but unfortunately I have other responsabilities such as having to practice things for drum lessons on a weekly basis as well as learning how to use a radio in a military fashion.

Hell man.. I usually play through Half-Life, Opposing Force and Blue Shift at least once every six months.. And if the graphics are REALLY that much of a problem for you buy Blue Shift, since it comes with the High Definition models that can be used in vanilla Half-Life (And it comes with the Opposing Force expansion too)

has this anything to do with HL2, other than you typing 'halflife 2'---when its supposed to be spelled Half-Life 2 ;)

Do i need to download hi-res version with steam?
oh and what is opposing force? just noticed this while on steam.

There's a reason why HL based games are still being played by 30,000 people at peak times during the day. It's because that all the games and third party mods are not based around graphical ability. It's the sheer gameplay feel that makes HL timeless. I've played through Half-Life completely at least once a year for the last 4 and a half years. I've also played variations of singleplayer like Counter-Life, Action Half-Life and other single player episodes. It really really is timeless.

I knew Half Life came with Steam but its Half Life with high res graphics now? Even better then the Blue Shift update? Can you post a picture?

No you have to buy Blue shift to get the HD pack, thats why i got BL :)

Opfor is a add-on game, showing you the story from alan sheppard's pov, a soldier sent to black mesa.

Opposing Force was the first official expansion pack. Play HL first, then OpForce. OpForce lets you play through the game through the eyes of a soldier, parallel to the mission as Gordon in HL1.

I am playing the game for the third time now, which doesn't even put me anywhere close to the "hardcore" fanbase. HL is the only game that I've played more than once, it is one of a kind experienced that should not be missed. Yes the graphics are dated, but they still hold up to a point, you'll be suprised at how easy it is to get into. And I can only imagine that your HL2 experience can only be enhanced by playing through the first one. Your first time through it will probably take you around 40 hours give or take depending on your skill. I say give it a go for sure!

But does the high-res Half Life on Steam look better then the version of Half Life with the HD pack? Can someone take a picture of Barney or someone so I can see how they look now?

They just "upped" the character models and textures. You can tell the difference. As far as if it looks better than the version with the HD pack, I am not sure.

SixxHole, can you take a picture of a Barney and post it on here please?

Is it worth downloading Steam to play the high-res version of Half-Life? What does Steam do to the current one? Also, is Steam easy to uninstall?

The moment anyone starts using message boards for useless stuff like this is the moment that they, too, become "hardcore." Sorry, but you're one of us now.

Don't bother with Steam now. In case you haven't nothiced all the threads. Its close to dead right now. Wait a day or two...or it might be better tonigh. But back when things where good in Beta, it ran perfectly for myself. Is it worth it to download because of the "mind blowing graphics"? No, but you do notice they are better. Steam doesn't do anything to it...besides Stream it to you while you play...which is actually kinda cool since my HL was lost and I had my Counter-Strike CD key and get to play both like before. And yeah, its really easy to get rid of....but it will come back if you plan on getting HL2.

i have the HD pack.. used it a few times but not anymore..

it adds new gun models, a few maps altered.. mainly what HD is just eye candy.. the models/skins of the players themselves look the same tho..

yes, playing HL and OP4 is worth it, like Chris_D said, its a timeless classic :)

looks like im gonna be busy for the nxt couple of weeks then ;)
think I should start straight away on highest difficulty?
can you tell a big differance with AI between difficulty settings or is it like combine take more hits to kill/you lose more health etc?...

i just started half life again so i could have an idea of how it ended and get a feel for the atmosphere etc, started it on friday and just finished tonight, amazing fun :D
gotta download opposing force and blue shift off somewhere now tho to complete the story, haven't got those and have only played opforce.

2 nights to finish? you must have been playing it non stop :)

The only game I've ever played on the hardest difficulty setting and managed to complete was Mafia (great game by the way!) but I'll give half-life a go on hard ;)

does anyone know how the save feature is going to be implemented in hl2? will it be so many saves per level or just your bog standard save whenever, wherever? (more intense if you can only save a couple of times per level, that would be cool)
