Tools?

Sorry, I'm sure this has been asked a few thousand times but the search feature is dire on this site so..

What tools would I need to be able do some coding for HL2? It's the only thing for making a Mod i've not actually looked into so I thought I'd give it a try but I'm completely clueless.

Visual Studio .NET 2003 is your best bet, if you don't have the cash for that there is a beta of Visual C++ express available.
