Okay, so I was reading the Digipen campus newsletter (found at: http://www.digipen.edu:16080/images/3/37/Dec05Newsletter.pdf ) and I found this little mentioning in the first article around halfway through the first page...

While they wait to find out how their game stacks up against their global competitors, the team, minus Eric Brown, are at work on a top-secret project for Valve Software of Bellevue, Washington. So what can fans of "Narbacular Drop" expect in the future now that the team can draw on the resources of Valve, one of the leading video game companies? Product manager and programmer Jeep Barnett says, "Narbacular Drop is what got us noticed but everything beyond that is behind closed doors for now."

You guys think they are the ones prototyping that one "buliding game"?

Well, they did say they were working a non-violent game.

finally, a not half-life game
i really wanna see what'll they do in another genre..

Whoa whoa whoa guys... The game in the article is NOT what they are doing for Valve... It is merely the game that got them noticed... They haven't said what they were doing with valve (for all we know, TF2 ;) )

I'm going to email Gabe and ask if he can shed some light on this. :)

so you saying TF2  ?

Pfft... Team Fortress 2... Pervert.

Wait... Did you say Team FORTRESS 2!? Oh thank God. Yes. Yes, that would be cool.

I wish :p I'm just saying that we don't know (that's why they said "Top Secret" in the article duh ;) )

I thought that they would be helping valve build that building game prototype... That's all just speculation though!

didnt they say that, they will announce TF2 after the release of HL2 :p
its been 1 year and still nothing...

anyway i really hope its TF2

Me too, but I'd doubt they'd give that project to college students ;)

*Update*

Nope.

Subject: Digipen Students working there?

Hey Gabe,

I was recently reading the latest Digipen newsletter and it mentioned
that a few students there are doing a project for you guys over
there...

Care to drop a hint at what it might be? :)

Thanks!

Oh god I started a rumor train! :(

LoL guys I can probably 99% guarantee it's not TF2... VALVe wouldn't give that kid to college students.

It's probably some prototype for a totally new game because they said they don't always want to do FPS'... So it's probably something totally new...

My bet's with the building game.
Valve saw how cool G-Mod and Mods like that were, so they wanted to make one with the funding and Valve spin.

And yet they hired kids that didn't even turn 18 yet.

But that's different because they already had a guaranteed success mod as they have stood the test of time. :)

These guys don't have anything that is mainstrem popular...

Sigh... as the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It would be wisest to Valve to continue working on first person shooters, because thats what theyre best at.

Yeah, because half life 8 is going to be so good.

No, they should branch out into different genres, or risk becoming ID.

Quoted for truth.

id was once great.....but they now have their heads way too far up their asses to put out any innovation

Which is why they realized that and are working on creating a new IP :)

We are not up to Half-Life 8. Half-Life 3 is the next big thing, they should work on that, and not waste time on nonsense like ragdoll kungfu and others. They need to work on major projects that gamers like. They need to follow the current trend, but innovate it with every step. They have done so with Half-Life and Half-Life 2, no reason to stop now.

I understand them working on Team Fortress 2 and/or Counter-Strike 2, as well as Half-Life 2 add-ons and Half-Life 3 itself. But they cannot afford to get offtracked with some random things that people dont care about. I know 90% of gamers would prefer new CSS maps/models or new DODS content, not some little 2D game like ragdoll kungfu that people would only play once.

Its been over a year, CSS is still missing out on much content. DoDS is relatively new and is already dieing (look at the server numbers). More content for current games + development on major games > minority projects.

In conclusion, Valve should continue working on HL3 and HL2 addons, as well as adding content to CSS and DODS.

How do you know they wouoldnt be good at other genres? How will valve know unless they try? Please ... new horizons are so much more exciting!

You do know that Valve didn't write Ragdoll Kung Fu, don't you? Or Darwinia? The amount of time and people that they devoted to getting these projects onto Steam would be negligible, and wouldn't have any impact on CS:S or DoD:S at all.

I read somewhere, that it'lll be an online building game, where you build buildings, and everything online with the other players. On the Source Engine.
